Gravity (2013)
Still feeling dizzy right now
I used to dream about floating in space, staring at the stars crossing aside and admiring the nebula. Nothing can be more halcyon and more enjoyable. Now having seen this movie, I'm glad that I executed the space trek in my dream and not in reality. The view is absolutely breathtaking thanks to the CGI; the long shot in the beginning is stunning. Adding depths and the feeling of room, 3D really takes this movie to a whole new level. The unexpected coming of debris did hold me back, at first. However, the ever appearing predicaments generate humdrum. There are also several scenes that do not make sense for me. How can NASA send an astronaut having not successfully driven a re-entry module into space? How can an astronaut forget to grab tools after using them in space, AFTER already losing a hold of a nail once? How can a frog stay alive in sea water??? Moreover, the growing pitch occurring every time a door or anything needed to be closed annoys me a little. After all, it is undoubtedly a good movie with a fresh story and brilliant pictures, but it can be better.
The Great Gatsby (2013)
A gilded movie
Tawdry, fancy, flamboyant and resplendent, the movie centers mostly on demonstrating the degeneration of the beat generation, thus tilting the balance between visual effect and underlying story(some of the scenes actually look fake) Initially I was so bewildered by the movie, more specifically this blunt story, that I couldn't believe such a renowned book only tells a commonplace love tragedy. It seemed no profound truth to be gained. Then one day, strolling on the way home, I was suddenly enlightened: we are all Gatesby. Harboring great expectations for the future, we pursue the green light across the river, arduously reach out both arms and exert all we have graping the twinkling in the mist while actually drifting far away. Yes, the ideal future is either what we already have or what is not accessible.
Pacific Rim (2013)
Lying flat on my bed while watching, I really fell asleep
I can recite the lines in the trailer; that's how much I looked forward to this movie. But I fell asleep while watching it, literally. So disappointed. The comments made by people around me always start with "horrible story" and end up with "perfect special effects though". Truth to be told, I can totally foresee that, for nearly all action movies follow this trend. But I was wrong. There is no single twist surprising and the actress really can't act! What's wrong with her face?! She does not know how to smile, does she? Then the robots. Come on. These huge machines are unable to leave deep impression on audience. The fighting scenes are of great chaos-sea water, buildings, robots and monsters mix with each other so that I could only tell that something is moving in the screen. The finale eventually adds the last awful stroke. The only thing of this movie worth keeping is the theme song, boosting work efficiency.
Avatar (2009)
It is about memory.
Several years have passed since the first time I watched this movie in theater, which really gave me a chill. The story has already faded in my memory but the amazement of the special effects remains. It is undeniably a milestone in movie history setting aside its profoundity. Why does this web require minimum words? Well things above are all I have to say about the movie. I have no idea how to make this review long enough to be 10 lines. The female avatar is beautiful though. I do think the movie would have been better off had the avatar language not sounded so bizarre and ancient. The tiger ish thing(or maybe a panther?) looks but cool. Are there 10 lines or not?
Inception (2010)
Creating a room
First I intend to post several thoughts about the tricky points in the movie.
Whether on earth can we use totem to distinguish reality and dreams?
Totum works because only the owners know its weight and way of balance so that they could tell the difference in dreams created by others. Joseph also explained in the movie: "in that way you will know if your are in someone else's dreams." But there are no single evidence showing totem functions in people's own dreams, which means even if Cobb's top stops spinning, he is not indubitably in reality.
Is the ring a sign of dreaming?
In dreams, people wear whatever they want: in hotel they are all suited up; in the third level they wear weight camouflages. Some argues that the ring only appears in Cobb's dreams but what is that to do with whether his "reality" is a dream or not? If Cobb himself believes that the world where his wife dies is reality certainly he would not wear the ring-no matter he is right or wrong about that point.
Why does Mal not wake Cobb up if she does go back to the real world?
Cobb once says he and Mal lose in limbo because they try to study the nature of dreams and thus build lots of them; sedation, in this case, certainly is demanded. Now we all know that when it comes to sedation hardly can one be waked up and the kind Cobb use could likely impair the ears.
Moreover, in a scene, Mal tells Cobb that the children are not real and Cobb is dreaming. He asks back:"if this is my dream why can't I control it?" "Because you don't know you are dreaming!" so she says.
Does this notable detail suggest that Cobb may live in a dream which he calls reality?
Well, all I said above is meaningless, isn't it?
Just like many other movies, TVseries, animations, to attract audience Inception offers a world of void. No one, however, could mix stories with reality, neither can he or she perfect the logic behind the stage. The screenwriter arranged a house where all the sets seem reasonable. But in the end, when the audience query what's behind the door, usually no answer is served, for even the screenwriter has not been there.
