A Marriage of Convenience (1998)
Literate, Thoughtful and a mid-life romance with strong leads
Without relying on profanity or perky leads in their twenties, this is how romances used to be made. Is the premise unlikely? Highly. But Brolin and Seymour are a joy to watch, the long experience as romantic leads making their characters believable despite the premise. The banter is fresh and this movie has something solid to say about why people should marry.
A Rainy Day in New York (2019)
A love-song for being young & in love in Manhattan
Woody Allen will always be controversial. But the man is a masterful filmmaker. Here's a little film about a 24-hr. spree that reminded me of Risky Business in its coming-of-age-truths. It comments through an ironic eye on how different being in love is now than when I was young in New York. Everyone has their own story about falling in love in the City. This is one-& with a great soundtrack.
Deal (2008)
Haunting movie for Poker newbies
As a woman I've never really "gotten" poker. But the late-in-life performance by Burt Reynolds mitigates the criticisms from some reviewers that the movie is shallow or commercialized. Charles Durning-also a last performance- has a great cameo. And if you don't understand Poker it doesn't really matter: As Tommy Vinson says early on "Don't play the cards; play the player"
Doors Open (2012)
Clever, incredibly well-acted, charming
A movie for adults, for a change that keeps you guessing-and smiling- with first-rate acting in a dramas about art and friendship.
