Grace of My Heart (1996)
Song writer creates career and family and loves over the fifties or sixties to present time.
This flavor of an era, the spirit of a moment, sensitive treatment of a fictitious woman based on some models from 20th Century pop music and New york history. The acting was excellent and the music left me wistful, relaxed and energized. It was well written. I particularly like Matt Dillon as her second husband, third lover. I saw a boyish brilliance that made her love for him totally believable. It was fun, a little spiritual and nice costumes and local flavor of New York and California. I wanted to know more. Of course, we know it was loosely based on Carol King and Carly Simon but that is besides the point. It was a movie that a young adult or middle aged woman could watch without shame. Ileana Douglas and the rest of the cast did not have to imitate life.
Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001)
Canadian teens socialize and learn about life
In this Canadian village of Toronto, DeGrassi Street is depicted as a medley of cross cultures and multi talents of many students and parents and surrogate parents. The adults relate to the kids and the kids relate in a typically dysfunctional way while they interact in the school and out on the town. I love this show. Ask me why? I wish I knew. Maybe because it reminds me of my daughter watching it when she was there age. I wish that I had had a show like this to watch when I was a teenager. I had to struggle on my own. This movie makes us realize that all people are fallible, even the creative and brilliant. And of course the sexy and bratty are interesting and compelling. The Canadian flavor and cinematography is more edgy and humorous than 90210 and I enjoy the variety of rough and tender moments.
Men in Trees: Pilot (2006)
Marin moves out of her standard New York City life to face the Great North
This does remind me of my time in Alaska as a New York City woman facing a surprising environment and interesting people and flora and fauna. I did find it believable except for the fact that no one consummates in this pilot. It would have been warmer if they actually had sex but I guess it would not have passed the "censor". And now we get to wonder what will happen next. The acting is sweet and energetic and it has both a funny and pathetic twist. I was left wanting to return to Alaska and to return to the next episode of this cute family show. I loved the little touches, especially her slapstick antics, her high heels, and the confusion of a new environment way over her head. And now there are plenty of lessons to be learned..By the way, I emailed my Alaskan friend and told him to check it out.
