Now, I have read the book - it was an immersive and thrilling ride. Which makes the show even more disappointing.
Here we have yet another example of Hollywood thinking that a cast of modelesque 30-year-old "teenagers" living in huge expensive houses (except for one broke guy who still resides in a very nice apartment that just needs a good clean) is a believable and engaging take on what an average high-schooler's life is like. The whole thing just looks too inauthentic for me to really care or be able to immerse myself in.
The show manages to spoil many of the book's cool mysteries and reveals in the first few episodes for absolutely no reason, killing most of the suspense and natural momentum, then really scrambles for drama later on. As a result, midway through the season, it goes off the rails and turns into a sloppy Pretty Little Liars knockoff, inane twists full of holes included.
Meh... the adaptation is not unwatchable, but it is not particularly good either.
