Nightlife (2020)
A total waste of time
Bad acting, indifferent story, amateurish director. Could be interesting if it was made by elementary school pupils. Nothing more to say, don't waste your time.
Beckett (2021)
As convincing as Little Red Riding Hood
Bad directing, mostly bad acting, childish storyline. My 3 stars just because of the only positive: Alicia Vikander.
Bir Baskadir (2020)
I drank it in one go
As a Greek I can relate to both modern and traditional aspects of contemporary Turkey. It was not much different here 60-70 years ago. But I couldn't expect to be confronted with such a magnetising masterpiece that I couldn't let off, watching all 8 episodes in one go. The actors are brilliant without exception, camera is partially silently shocking, images captured are impregnated in a spectator's head, the story will bring tears to your eyes but most important: not one character is good or bad. They are all both good and bad, making them exceptionally human.
So, who is this director? Who are these actors? Why can't we have more from them?
Zero (2018)
I don't understand the world
As a westerner, I am not a big fan of Indian movies. This one got me curious through its cover image and I watched it on Netflix. And guys, is this a great film! The music is amazing, the colours are magical, the characters are crazy and absurd and convincing and funny and sad.
This is a story about a loser, a zero, a fantast, an egoist who at the end and through another zero (the countdown zero) will turn into the greatest man on Earth.
Lots of subtle humor, hilarious scenes, fairy tale scenes ("Mere Naam Tu" dance, zero gravity scene, Aafia driving her wheelchair through US streets dressed in a colourful traditional Indian dress).
I don't understand the "absurd second half" critiques. Welcome to cinematography. Name one great movie that isn't based on absurdity.
Defiance (2008)
What a pity
What a pity. Great story but very bad acting, very bad directing, very bad cutting, combat scenes almost hilarious. Not better than a freshman's movie.
