Love Allways (2023)
Not my cup of tea
For me, this show falters on two fronts, as of episode 3.
First, its cast is 18-22, meaning that maturity level is a big factor. I'm 36, and perhaps a younger viewer would feel differently, but to me, a lot of the participants lack a well-developed personality. In the case of a few of the guys, it's almost like watching children go about their day. If these people were maybe 5 years older, I think you'd have a much different dynamic.
The second is that the pace is too quick. There's an elimination each episode, so there's not a lot of time to get to know these people, or for them to get to know each other. For me, a large part of the appeal of reality dating shows is to see friendships and relationships blossom. Love Island does this very well. Here, it feels rushed.
All in all, I don't know if this was a swing and a miss, or a cynical cash grab, but I think the execution of an otherwise interesting concept isn't very good. One of the two dating coaches is 29, so still very young, and seeing him interact with one of the contestants in episode 2 comes off like he's parenting a child. If the contestants were older and more mature, and the show had a slower pace, I think this show could be great. As it is, I couldn't get into it.
The Thinning: New World Order (2018)
Perfectly adequate sci-fi thriller
This isn't the best or most original movie I've ever seen, but the acting is absolutely fine, even from the not-so-beloved Logan Paul. The plot is pretty compelling, if nothing new. This movie probably isn't the best 90 minutes you'll ever spend, but it's 90 minutes well-spent nonetheless.
Charmed (2018)
Pretty promising
So, i just watched the pilot, and here are my thoughts:
Positives:
Obviously, better CGI and effects, intriguing storyline, and overall smarter protagonists. I loved the original sisters, but I don't see these girls getting as easily confused at pretty basic time travel concepts.
Negatives:
A bit heavy-handed with its treatment of the MeToo movement, and female empowerment, in general. I think it can be handled in a better, subtler way, but it isn't jarring.
Neutral Observation:
Pretty obvious change is the casting of Hispanic women instead of white women. I think this opens up avenues of exploration the original series might not have had. One of the sisters is also gay or bi, so pretty solid on the diversity front, with possibly interesting social commentary and plot hooks.
Honestly, I think most of the negative reviews have to do with this not being the original series. If you liked the 98-06 show, you'll probably enjoy this one.
