The Loft (2014)
One Twist Too Many
I really liked the majority of this movie. It kept me interested and for the most part it also kept me guessing. The problem is they added in one too many twists. I didn't actually dislike either of the major twists. Both of them would have been good endings to the movie, but the fake out and then the reveal of the "true" story was too much. I knew that I was going to be disappointed when the first "shock" happened and there was still more than 20 minutes left in the movie.
Also, the end was too happy for the characters. There were really no "good guys" in this movie. They were all a bunch of assholes and none of them deserved even a "happy for now" ending. I didn't mind the lack of likable characters until the end.

Passable but I wouldn't watch it again
If I had known what I knew now I probably wouldn't have watched this movie. But unfortunately hindsight is 20/20. So in the hopes of saving someone else from the same fate, I'm writing a review. Now don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad movie, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a good one either. The twist is more than a little obvious if you think about it for more than 30 seconds.
The biggest problem though isn't the obvious ending, it's the fact that the people who made this movie don't seem very sure about what they wanted this movie to be. Half of it was straight out of a typical teenage slumber party movie, but the other half felt like it belonged in a serious drama/thriller. I kind of understand what they were going for but I think it would have been a lot better if they had concentrated less on the sleepover aspect and more on the thriller part of the movie.
There were some subplots that just didn't fit right and I also felt in some places like the use of "teen slang" was forced and just odd. Yes teens says things like "totes" and "shiz", but it felt like the placement of these words was too deliberate rather than the casual way they are typically used.
Overall, it felt like this movie was trying to be "I Know What You Did Last Summer" with less gore and more substance, but it just fell flat and looked like someone took two completely different movies and turned them into one.

Giving it a 3 might be generous
I should have known better than to watch this movie. I blame Netflix and their category system. This was listed as a psychological thriller, so I was hoping for a movie with a little bit more of a purpose and a little less gore. Overall it wasn't a gorefest by any means, I just happen to be one of those weirdos that loves horror but can't stand blood. Lucas' task in the third round almost made me turn off the movie all together(it's the one the movie covers foreshadows and if you're worried - yes he goes through with it). All of the characters seemed to have back stories, but you don't really get to find out any of them other than the main character, Iris.
Even though I sometimes have to avert my eyes, I don't mind a movie that involves a lot of death, but it needs to have a purpose. While yes the people are playing a game for money, I don't understand the motive of the rich benefactor. Well that's not really true I believe his motive was he found the "game" entertaining. Some people might enjoy that, but I don't. I need a legitimate reason for people to kill someone else.
Maybe it's because I'm a bit twisted and like to root for the killer and to do so I need a reason. Take Saw for example. Jigsaw had a clear reason for doing what he did and you got an explanation for pretty much every victim he picked(there might have been one here or there over the course of 7 movies that he just picked for the hell of it). And the worst part for me was that at times I felt like I was missing something. The rich guy definitely seemed to be targeting certain people in particular, but the movie never explains why. It seemed to be that maybe he deemed some people's reasons for being there not "good enough", but I could be completely off base there.
I don't know if I've ever said this before about a movie I didn't like but I honestly think this movie would have been much better if it was longer. 90 minutes just was not enough time to tell this particular story. Either that or they should have cut out a couple of the extra characters to make time for the main characters to shine. I could have done without the son or the doctor who had previously won the game(which I totally missed while watching it because they didn't really make that clear, the whole time he was on screen I was wondering who he was). I think this movie was so disappointing because it could have been a really good one. If you're looking for a good Saw knockoff check out Nine Dead. It's the torture most fans know and love and also has the psychological aspect that this film is sorely lacking.
