Reptile (2023)
Slow Burn.....Captivating...!!!
A great watch. Tons of such content across the cinematic universe, but something in this movie stands out. Captivating and gripping, keeps you guessing all the time. Del Toro has once again shown, why he's rated so high. A real master of his craft. The plot takes it's time and nothing has been rushed, keeping the viewer engaged. One can feel 'True Detective' vibes here and there, but the movie is unique in its own way. The background score compliments the tone of movie. Screenplay is remarkable and the camera work is great too. Somwhere in the hasty factory of garbage content across the OTTs, such type of product is a breath of fresh air...!!
Dahaad (2023)
In a league of its own...!!!
Indian OTT platforms have been flooded with content right now, but this little venture stands it's ground. Strong performances by everyone, not a single character seems out of palace. Nothing over the top, but everything fits like pieces of a puzzle. Desert background is a nice touch. Every character seems natural, no fake accents and no unnatural dialogue delivery. Sonakshi is an underrated actress, she always is graceful to watch. Gulshan is always at ease on the screen. But Vijay Verma steals the limelight. He's has proven his versatility again. The way he has portrayed his character, is a treat for eyes. Lastly the Indian social system has been portrayed accurately in the series with clear social messages. We need such series and content to watch, would definitely like to see the characters on another venture in a sequel...!!
Hunger (2023)
Unexpectedly beautiful...!!!
Few in recent past have been crafted like this. Bizarre and beautiful simultaneously. The journey of the protagonist is out of ordinary. I have seen many chef/cook movies, but nothing like this before. Underneath all that's going about, there's something powerful taking place. Social context and human values being tossed in a wok. Might be slow paced, but that's the need of the context. Some strong performances by the actors. Tone of the movie, with subtle background score intensifies the experience. Extremely satisfied with the team behind this film and definitely craving for some more in future...!!!
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Thor: God or Jester...!!!
A good movie, but too many jokes left me a bit distasteful. I couldn't comprehend the need of too much comic tone of the movie. A God should be treated with some respect and seriousness. Marvel should strike a balance between yin and yang....!!!
The Green Knight (2021)
Watch it at 2x playback...!!
Visually stunning and a Guy Ritchie-esque story telling, but still falls short somewhere. Watch it at 2x playback speed, if you want to finish the ordeal a bit early...!!!
Lupin (2021)
Interestingly fresh...!!!
Intriguing, novel and interesting. In recent times OTTs have been flooded with murder mysteries and procedural shows. But Lupin definitely brings something new to the table. The mystique of the show is well crafted and keeps you guessing the gentleman burglar's next move. Looking forward to future installments eagerly and impatiently...!!!
Raat Akeli Hai (2020)
Dark Murder Mystery...Indian Cinema is Evolving..!!!
Indian cinema has undergone transition recently. Recognition of character actors, experimenting directors and writers has brought a long awaited pleasant change. The movie is a great representation of all that.
Positives:
Solid casting, no big names yet powerful and suitable actors chosen. Nawazuddin, Radhika, Tigmanshu and many more are all one of the finest actors in India and they definitely deliver a punch.
Story although a bit Poirotesque but still beautifully written. The slow build culminating into a big finale is crafted with precision. May be inspired by Agatha Christie's style where everyone is a suspect, but still the suspense is created and kept me guessing till the very end. The curtain raiser we had, I never saw it coming. The love story woven into a murder mystery may sound Bollywoodish but that doesn't derail the plot.
Negatives:
The songs had no place in the movie and seemed a bit out of place. They tried to do Gangs of Wasseypur here by even going with off beat and classical lyrics, but things did not click.
Conclusion:
Good thriller and a right step into right direction by Indian cinema. Time to recognise good actors and movie-plots rather than going for spicy formula and celebrity actors.
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Not for classic Poirot fans.....!!!
Once you've watched the classics this can't be fulfilling. I don't think it is terrible but couldn't create the magic of a slow whodunit. Like Jeremy Brett can't be surpassed as Sherlock Holmes (no offence to Mr. Cumberbatch), there's no point questioning David Suchet as the Poirot Madam Christie would've dreamt of. Mind you there's some lovely picturesque and some strong performances too but something is missing, something which keeps you bound to a murder mystery; was lacking. Kenneth Branagh, I think is a bit rigid, a bit strong. The subtleness and the mischievousness of David Suchet is what I missed may be. The plot can't be wrong as it is a classic in itself. In the end, for the newer generation it would be watchable but for the older fans who have seen David for decades scratching his little grey cells, this would never suffice....!!!
