They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969)
No sugar coating
Hell of a movie I've seen it 4x now and still think it's Jane Fonda's best performance.
Could not replicate this movie now with social distancing. If this movie is a snapshot of America during the Great Depression, I would have turned on this country The brutality as depicted, is troubling especially in slow motion.
Breaking Bad (2008)
METHod to his madnesss
With all of the skills WW had, chemistry, business management electro mechanical he could not come up with a cure for his cancer It seems like he didn't even try.. He could have volunteered with the American Cancer Society He ruined thousands of families while trying to save his own I only rented the final season at my local library to see what the hoopla was about. I know of no one who had watched the show so I watched it with no previous judgment of the show. It is captivating in a way like watching a train fall off a trestle Since WW's partner in crime got away, there must be a sequel in the works to be called 'Breaking Worse'
Goodbye Solo (2008)
Boring
Maybe I missed something in the movie (don't think so) but I found the film very slow moving and consisting of nothing but watching the title characters sleeping, smoking cigarettes and driving a cab and having their daily squabbles. My lady friend and I thought there was too little to justify 90 minutes of inaction for. The scenery at the end of the movie was the best feature. I think people who pay good money for watching this picture are wasting their time and deluding themselves they are seeing a hidden gem. I felt there was little reason to sympathize with the old man He made his bed and he was going to die in it. Solo felt an attachment to him only because of a sense of a borderline vicarious adventure but there was no way he could prevent the predetermined outcome nor do I feel he really wanted to.
Moneyball (2011)
baseball 21st century style
The movie was a pleasant surprise I find most sports movies are trite and predictable, but Moneyball was extremely watchable and held my interest for the two hours. Brad Pitt obviously dug into the role of Billy Beane. He knew he really did not have much in Oakland either with the players or the stadium, but he stayed true to character by turning down the Boston GM position. I wondered why he did not fire Art Howe when he caught the team 'celebrating' in the locker room after a loss. Terry Francona got fired in Boston last year for the team doing similar behavior as Oakland was showing but Beane was not seen as taking Howe to task for allowing this to occur doing the season. As Howe was unhappy with his one year contract, I would have taken this as a personal affront and dumped him Beane had a short fuse and attention span as his actions proved. He wanted easy, short answers to questions The long winded responses the scouts came up with as to player development and acquisitions was not his style The more he heard, the more he saw it was to be his way or the highway He did not need or care to field input from the scouting organization. Overall, the movie was about a strong personality as well as baseball.
The Snake Pit (1948)
A 1948 reality show
This was a disturbing movie to watch even though it seemed to have a happy ending. At the time I first saw the movie in the 1960's, I had a friend who was in a mental ward briefly and the scenes were frightening realistic with the characters portrayal and the prevalence of shock therapy While it is true the ending was over the top with the "Going Home' sequence, the message of hope was uplifting and was counter to the stark hard to watch struggles of daily life in the hospital. How anyone got better at all was a miracle. At least they tried to make sure the discharged patient had someplace to go unlike 'Swing Blade' where Billy Bob Thornton was just sent on his way even though he was potentially violent.
