Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
Batman the way he is meant to be!
If there is a definitive Batman movie out there...this is it! I grew up watching Batman: The Animated Series and am an avid graphic novel collector. The plot of this film is by far one of the best ever submitted to the Batman mythology. Not to mention the exquisite animation and voice talents of Kevin Conroy and the great Mark Hamill. Not only is the acting in this film amazing, and the dialogue well-crafted, but the story is compelling and real. The group who made the original BTAS simply get the character and it shows in their work.
To sum it all up: I wish I had more hands so I could give this movie FOUR THUMBS WAY UP! It is possibly the greatest Batman film of all time, and certainly tops my list.
The Batman (2004)
Worthless!
I was raised watching the original Batman Animated Series, and am an avid Batman graphic novel collector. With a comic book hero as iconic as Batman, there are certain traits that cannot be changed. Creative liberties are all well and good, but when it completely changes the character, then it is too far. I purchased one of the seasons of "The Batman" in the hopes that an extra bonus feature could shed some light on the creators' reasoning for making this show such an atrocity. In an interview on the making of "The Batman," one of the artists or writers (I'm unsure which) said that "We felt we shouldn't mess with Batman, but we could mess with the villains." So, they proceeded to make the Joker into an immature little kid begging for attention, the Penguin into some anime knockoff, Mr. Freeze into a super-powered jewel thief, Poison Ivy into a teenage hippie, and countless other shameful acts which are making Bob Kane roll over in his grave.
To sum it all up: I wish I had more hands so I could give this show FOUR THUMBS DOWN. It squeezes by my rating with a 2 out of 10 simply because it uses the Batman name. Warner Bros...rethink this! Please!
Ben 10 (2005)
A little too close-minded, there.
The previous comment was made by someone who is simply a critic and has no interest in just sitting down and watching a TV show without pointing out their perceived "faults." I think that this show's originality is splendid, if the plot perhaps a bit slow. It is also the same animation as the Teen Titans Animated Series, so they compare in some areas (especially Star Wars rip-offs. Titan Series fans know what I'm talking about). Perhaps if there were more internal struggles within the trio rather than new aliens popping up conveniently everywhere, the show would have more direction and not be as predictable. But I do think that this show's potential to become a cult classic (among various age groups) is becoming increasingly more likely. I enjoyed it without being too critical.
