Paris, Texas (1984)
amazing movie
What an intriguing drama. It was such a cool story. Everything makes sense. Maybe you won't agree with the end, but it is at least plausible. I love the twists and turns. I love that you didn't really know what was going on. These questions kept on growing until almost the very end. Great timing... Great acting... Can't say enough good things about this movie. Must see! So not what I thought I was going to see when I heard the title. It reminded me a bit of rain man at times, but the story is completely different. I guess I should say that rain-man reminded me of this movie. I almost also prefer the story line in Paris, Texas than in the rain-man (though I also loved the rain-man).
To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995)
wish there were more like this
It is definitely not as good as the adventures of Priscilla queen of the desert, but this movie certainly reminded me of that movie. The difference is as many have mentioned, the fact that this movie is much less courageous. I am glad there is a movie like this in the US, but there is a long way to go. I am especially happy about this movie because it is as close to a family movie as you will get if you are talking about drag queens.
The acting is obviously great. I always complain of actors that have only one side to them. In this picture, you see that Wesley Snipes and Patrick Swayze have much more to offer. I also like that it gives hope of a time in the future in which sex will not be a variable with which people will discriminate. The movie is perhaps so safe that it will probably not change many minds. However, it also gives an idea of how easy it would be for us to be comfortable with one another.
Oh, and don't get me wrong. Even if you don't like the subject matter, you will have fun. This is a fun movie all around.
Angels in America (2003)
Just real...
I was so surprised about how much an artful movie can convey so many true feelings. Angels in America touches on AIDS in the 1980's through the very complex personalities of very different characters. Some parts are just dreamy and yet essential. Don't worry about details. Try to see what is driving the scenes as it all comes together.
Love... Love... Love... That is what it all comes down to. And yet, there is so much hatred as well. I guess that is what life really is... isn't it?
Great acting... I cannot say enough about the acting. It is not just Al Pacino. All the actors are completely believable and lovable. You cannot but get attached to every one of them, even if you hate their personalities. After all, it is humankind that they are reflecting...
It is an adaptation from a screenplay but somehow you still get the feeling you are watching a play... a really really good play of course. There is so much to the dialogue. The characters can escape being characters very smoothly and yet you can easily jump back into the "film".
Great all around movie/miniseries. This movie is VERY heavy. In addition, this movie might bother you if you are an EXTREME conservative. It is long, but definitely worth it. You must go through the whole movie until the end. There is much to be learned from the development in the end.
Ghost World (2001)
strange, sad, but interesting
Life after high school for non complacent teen-agers is never as easy. Though most people cannot really relate to any of the characters, there is something interesting about the story. Perhaps the fact that the story is unpredictable. Somehow, the strange nature of the characters makes everything believable.
Great casting and good acting. The storyline has some holes though. The point to the story really only comes close to the end and even then, I felt it a bit confusing. It is still very entertaining... Worth watching...
Paradise (1991)
He can't stop impressing me
Remember "The Good Son" with Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin? Well McCauley was already famous, but Elijah was just starting. In this film, Elijah has a similar and very believable personality when he is stuck with a couple going through some rough times. It seems everybody seems to learn from his caring and honest manner as much as he learns from his life in the simple south. Melanie Griffith also does a good job in a very tough role, being hurt and numb after a very dramatic event in her life. Everything fits well in the plot and you can never really tell what the end will bring. Just a great all around film.
