Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Fresh, action packed, new world building story line.
I love action, along with a good story line and this series provides it in spades. With fresh ideas, new characters and a fascinating new story line, it's become one of my favorite Star Trek series to date.
Lang dianxia (2020)
Well worth the watch...
One of the best of the 2020 season! Darren Wang brings his A-game and steals the show, successfully representing his Wolf-Boy-To-Man character; however, all of the actors do a great job. With a wonderful back story for the ML, this is one of the truly amazing and interesting C-series shows to hit the screen in awhile. Hoping DW is in more costume series. "Bring it" Darren...

Not to be missed
Offering stunning cinematography with a captivating story to tell, this is a must see, currently streaming on Netflix. This is no GOT to which some critics have compared it. Unless a series came out in the 1930's, then most everything has been put to film before and anything new draws some of their parts on something that's already been done. That being said, I don't see the comparison to GOT. This series stands on its own merits. I binge watched the first season and await more.
Sense8 (2015)
Weaving a rich tapestry of intertwined lives
Weaving a rich tapestry of intertwined lives in a world where being different is life threatening, this show melds different cultures, locales, ethnicities, skills and personalities to make it one of the most compelling shows to hit the flat screen in decades. Join the ride for a sumptuous feast of television at its best. Teamwork is one of the main themes in this show and it builds on that theme, along with love, friendship, overcoming adversity, family, responsibility, building from a slowly evolving landscape to a crescendo of a finale. Can't wait for season 2.
Bravo!
Reign (2013)
"Reign" the script writers in
Possible spoilers if you're not caught up on Season 2: Season 1 was compelling t.v. for the political intrigue, the supernatural bend to the storyline, the strong characters, the love portrayed between the now King and Queen. With Season 2, we get a bunch of simpering characters all the way around, and especially with an unforgiving, whimpering Queen who supposedly and unbelievably, given the steely strength she portrayed in S1, will not forgive a King who made choices with his back against the wall and who has become a shadow of her former self, certainly not deserving of any storyline time. I hope the writers rethink the direction of this show if there is a future season. 1 star for this season.
The Best of Me (2014)
The Best of Me. Really?!!!
They should have "Hollywood" aged the younger actors in this film as the older versions didn't have the spunk nor chemistry of their younger counterparts and looked nothing like the teenage versions. The film's running time was way too long to come to the hokey ending that was served up. Gerald McRaney put in a great performance, as did the younger version of the lovers. The film begins to lose steam when the lover's older counterparts come into play and the ridiculous subplots begin to lead toward a contrived- and dissatisfying- conclusion considering the long lead-in and direction the movie took prior to that point.
Gotham (2014)
Boredom sets in quickly with each episode
The show does successfully create a picture of the gritty underside of a dark city with plenty of corrupt characters and a few heroes; however, the characters are so laughable that there is little suspense to build upon. When the hero cop gets into trouble, he gets out of it with the most implausible script writing I've seen in a long time. We're never really afraid for his well being. The bad guys are laughable in their portrayal of thugs. I feel like this easily could be in cartoon format. I hope it gets better and that tension builds as the episodes progress in the series. Currently, I find myself with the episode playing in the background while I'm playing a game on my phone as boredom set in quickly.
A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
A Good Day To Die Bored
Simply put, this movie is not worthy of being part of this much beloved franchise. Unfortunately, the movie suffered from a lame script with too many blurry action scenes, too little plot development, too many unlikable characters, including the son who played the part so cold, and for which there was no explanation provided for his attitude until it was too late, that he was as unlikable as the villains. Bruce Willis is still up to the job of portraying this character; however, he wasn't given much with which to work and ends up coming across as a sidekick instead of the former powerhouse of the series. There are no meaty roles here given the too heavy reliance on over-the-top CGI. Let's hope this is a wake up call and more effort is put into the script if there is another installment.
Hemlock Grove (2013)
Witty, spooky, moody, gory. What more could you want!
This show is a great addition to Netflix's stable of shows. Each episode is well written, with characters that are fully fleshed out. You care about what happens to the main characters and want to root for them. One reviewer mentioned that people don't really speak like they do in this show. Who cares! The witty dialog adds levity during some dark moments in the show and adds to the storyline and the dynamics between the characters. So few Networks create material for their Horror SciFi fans. If they do, the show usually lasts only 1 season. Bravo to Netflix for taking a chance on this show and posting the entire first season rather than making us wait each week for the next episode.
The River (2012)
Simply awful
My favorite genre and yet there is something completely off about this series. The shaky cam footage where they don't really show anything offers no real scares and the way the series was produced is, well, boring to say the least. The actors performances are wooden as if they are just trying to get through their scenes so they can go home and get a paycheck. The SciFi, fantasy, supernatural, and horror genre are supposed to take you out of your comfort zone and into a different realm, whether it be magical, scary, or otherwise. With this show, I felt like I was watching a program that was in production and not "gelling" coherently. There is a hokey feel to the show, akin to a daytime soap opera. It was painful to get through the first couple of episodes - I finally gave up on the series. It was such a promising idea and had so much hype put forth ahead of the series premier that it is a shame that the end result didn't match the interesting, original premise of the show.
