Atiye (2019)
First international Turkish treat!
After 'Muhafiz', which I decided not to watch right after I saw the trailer, sorry but true, for various reasons with the first one it's being an American remake of all sorts of 'he is the chosen one to save the world and a girl to teach her his lessons wohoo flick!', Atiye has just arrived! Good acting, original 'Turkishized' talks and localized unsettling suspense, one that belongs here, right in the heart of Anatolia! Good job guys, and keep it up for more!
Aydede (2018)
Road to Moon is Road to Cinema!
Oner's first feature length film, Road to Moon is a great example of natural storytelling. Set in a small village in southern Turkey, it is the story of Bekir, a little boy whose grandpa passes away. We go through his struggles to buy a bicycle and innocent love story with betrayal and heartbreaking. There is no exaggeration in Oner's portrayal of the story and no agitation, which makes it easy to follow and sympathize with the characters. It is a must see in modern Turkish Cinema. Proving his directing skills in his short Buhar (Vanished into blue), Abdurrahman Öner seems to promise more feature length films in international festivals in the future.
Dügün Dernek 2: Sünnet (2015)
Why do they always have to do that?
This is another cliché example of those movies where the first movie is a great success and the 2nd is such a failure... Düğün Dernek 2 did make me laugh at some parts, however, it was only that and I felt sorry for all the Lira I paid going to this movie. Frankly, all that was nice was that the girl I loved was there with me.The jokes were mostly so simple and the script felt really scratchy. It was like the director had a week to shoot the movie and this is what came out. Acting was exaggerated and by that I do not mean to say I expected a whole lot of dramatic acting in a comedy movie. However, the acting of especially Rasim Oztekin was such a disaster. I know this guy from many movies where he was like a king, yet, it felt like he was kidding me in this movie. I do not think all these extra high volumed voices and shouting are needed to make an audience laugh. It turns into a mess and the sound becomes more disturbing than funny. The director Selcuk Aydemir did disappoint me knowing that he made the series İsler Gucler, a great piece of work. See? Sometimes you need to stick to making good work instead of making cash taking the advantage of people's love for your sort of work. I hope this trend of "oh I made a couple of good work and let's start shooting Düğün Dernek 3-4-5 and on" would end one day in my country. I gave it a 4, but I honestly think it deserves less since I felt like I was fooled by the whole crew.
Bir Zamanlar Anadolu'da (2011)
Best of Ceylan, Best of Turkish Cinema!
Bilge Ceylan is, to me, one of the best in the world and by far the best director in Turkey. This movie simply is more than a murder story as are the rest of Ceylan's movies. The looks that the characters have on their faces simply tell more than encyclopedias can. The more you watch the movies, the deeper insight you start the develop on the characters. You become one of them. You start questioning yourself, find yourself and lose yourself in those characters. Are you the murderer? Are you the suspect? Or are you the Autopsy Technician? If you want to watch a piece from real cinema, see Ceylan's "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia".
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Miller is back!!!
Oh George, you know what you do, don't you? Mad Max is really mad! Tom Hardy nails it, but the looks on Theron's face is beyond hot, the looks could only be explained as, I guess, mad... For the ones looking for what they are expecting to see after watching the trailer, you'll find it. Before going to the movie, I hope George is not going to disappoint me, but hey, he didn't. My expectations were already very high from the trailer looking all mad. For the big fans, Mad Max is back. And, I never exaggerate when it comes to movies. Scenes just do not let you sit back and lean on your back. It just doesn't let you breath for a second, which is well planned and exercised by Miller... Good job!
Buhar (2012)
Amazing!
Excellent cinematography! Excellent story telling!
Movie was shot with a 35 mm camera in one long take.
The symbolic language of the tension between the couple conveyed through a boiling kettle and the steam on the mirror is simply... wow!
In the meantime, the talk in the background coming from a live broadcast marriage program tells us what is so absurd about society and our understanding of marriage and expectations on us. It shows how desperate women can become in a male-dominated society.
Buhar, Vanished into Blue, is a great short from Mr. Oner,
Looking forward to the director's first feature-length!
Mucize (2015)
Worst of Kirmizigul!
First of all, really good picture with all the nice scenery from the hills of Turkey, but hey, thats not enough to make a movie a good one, one that evolves around a certain story with deep analysis and natural development! The movie tells the story of Aziz, a handicapped man, who is unconditionally loved by the fellow villagers. The audience just couldn't sympathize with the dude! The teacher who is sent to the village by the government is another failure, a man with "all the good intentions in the world". It just felt so fake and unreal. At the end of the movie, it felt like Kirmizigul "again" asked us to cry, but come on now, this just didn't work with me since I was busy praying the pain would end as soon as possible.
Oh my God! Such a waste of time!
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
It is a sin to go to that movie!
First of all, I loved the first one! It was a new breath with lots of colors and the dark humor it had. However... This follow-up couldn't have been worse... It is for kids from age 5 to 12. Seriously, I watch a lot of movies and I am a watcher who loves original stuff. This was such a disappointment. If you love action with no basis, go ahead and be my guest, but if you are, sorry to say, a good movie watcher who loves quality, show mercy on your money and spend it on charity or something! I'll give it a 3 out of 10 since so much money has been spent on this, and obviously, no matter how bad it is, a lot of people worked for this. Very cheesy text, very cheap scenario (feels like it was written in an hour), oh my God it was so bad.
We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
For the ones looking for thrill!
The movie reminded me of Kubrick's "the shining". It is a similar kind of thrill involved and I think there are direct references to that movie with a big empty house and with person losing his temper and sanity. The acting is amazing whereas the man character Kevin is sometimes little too much "evil" so to say. But after all, it is one disturbing movie for those looking for thrill. One side that could be criticized is the predictability of it. This is one thing that you might find weak about the movie. Also, the underlying symbolical language and the use of the color red are contributing a deal to the influential language of the movie. "We need to talk about Kevin" is one of the best movies on release now. So, if you want to go and see a good movie, this is going to be worth your money.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Not good!
The reason for my going to this movie was simple Gary Oldman. However, after I was out of the movie, I found out that I was cheated with Gary Oldman's name and his picture on the movie's poster. I will not give any spoilers about the movie and its story, however, those who remember Gary Oldman from movies like "Leon" and "State of Grace" are not recommended to see this movie. It is not a bad story, but could have been developed much better. Still, I am giving all the credits to Gary Oldman and his acting in the movie. I am thinking to myself, if there was no Gary Oldman, I would have badly regretted going there! Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is not a bad movie, but it is not a good one, either. It felt too long for me. The story moves very slow, and there is little action going on. If you are planning to go and see this movie, you should leave your expectations aside about Gary Oldman's presence there.
