Soft & Quiet (2022)
Contrived and Unbelievable Characters
The female leads, portrayed as out-of-the-closet bigots turned loose, were too ridiculously unbelievable to really hate, which weakened the motivation to care about their inevitable demise. The lead bully's discovery of a failed pregnancy...was that supposed to be her justification for starting a chapter of Nazis? Also weak was the stupid woman from Nebraska who for some reason spoke with a Southern accent(?), a mixed stereotype that ironically revealed the writer's own weird prejudices.
Admittedly, the means of their demise was uniquely done, it but didn't make up for the fact that even caricatures of bigots aren't this silly.
Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeywoman (2021)
Why fictionalize? Desperate for a new angle?
The plot is a dramatization of a wild story that Ailene told that has been proven to have never happened. Why bother to even tell it unless the producers were taking advantage of the public's fascination with her character. Felt desperate and wasn't very entertaining.
Cruella (2021)
Delightful, Added to All-Time Favorites
The high-fashion eye-candy was an unexpected treat, and the script provided both Emma Stone and Emma Thompson with roles to demonstrate their broad ranges. Wanted to watch it again immediately after it was over. (By the way, stay through the credits.) Great entertainment : engrossing plot well-delivered and wonderful to look at.
Firefly Lane (2021)
If you like the Lifetime channel, you'll like this
The whole series felt like a very long movie you'd see on the Lifetime channel in terms of characters, plot, tone, and predictability. Stereotypes abound (awkward shy girl, uber popular girl, angry teenager to name a few). Watched the whole series since a friend had recommended it strongly, but I confess to fast-forwarding through the last few episodes. If you're not a fan of the 'Lifetime genre', would skip this series.
The Wilds (2020)
Interesting Premise, but Hard to Get Past the Stereotypes
The premise of this story, how they ended up stranded and how they dealt with the challenges kept me interested enough to watch the whole season. The plot line focused on each character individually and how their pasts affected their behavior. Unfortunately, many of the characters were flagrant stereotypes and therefore predictable and not believable. The most cringe-worthy example was the Southern belle, who was a Bible-thumping, intolerant, pageant queen and Daddy's girl. Geez. (Bless the heart of the actress who had to play that little ole part.)
