Rage (2023)

Worst film I've watched in a long time
24 October 2023
I watched this in a film festival (FICG) and it might be the most disappointing film I've watched in a festival. Not even student low budget films are so disappointing. There's anything good about it.

To give some context: is by far the worst Mexican film I've watched, the worst sound editing I witnessed, a The Room direction quality, the worst horror film I watched in years and the most unnecessary, poorly written and predictable plot twist ever.

It's a shame that films of this quality are in film festivals only because of nepotism while there's hundreds of new filmmakers without exposition. At some points of the film it seemed like it was bad on purpose.

The script doesn't contain one single interesting dialogue, performances seem amateur, cinematography feels like if it was the first time the camera person hold a camera and color correction is practically inexistent.

I usually try to talk about the good things of a film but this time is just impossible.

Why?

Brickman makes everything, but makes everything wrong. This is the worst film I've seen in a long time.

Wolfwalkers (2020)

Outstanding masterpiece

Easily the best animated feature since Spirited Away.

Wolfwalkers, the fourth and most recent film from Cartoon Saloon, is easily one of the best animated films ever made. Co-director Tomm Moore and the whole studio has shown how big and talented they have become trough the years.

This is the third Cartoon Saloon movie about Irish folktales, following the already superb The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. When the studio got really high releasing Song of The Sea and The Breadwinner I thought they couldn't make it better, but Wolfwalkers shut my mouth. And I'm not saying I had low expectations for this one, I actually was really hyped and ready to be disappointed.

The Big Wish (2019)

A complete failure

Making an animated movie requieres a lot of things. Some of these things are a budget, of course; a good script; and creativity. Día de Muertos doesn't have any of those things.

I know there's a lot of people here in Mexico trying to grow the animation industry, but animated movies should be made only when they're worth of trying. Día de muertos took over 5 years to complete it's production, why would you spend so much time and money in something that doesn't have a good script? And I really mean it: the story is unbelievable boring and forced, each single situation and decision through the film feels unnatural and even cringy; characters are unidimensional and inconsistent with they're own develop; jokes are just repetitive and annoying to the point I wanted to leave the theatre (and I NEVERE do this). So, if you don't have a good script why are you trying to make an animated movie? And it is obvious that the producers didn't have the budget neither.

The lack of creativity is fundamental for this cinematographic failure. It's like if they just made the most "off the shelf" characters, designs and EVERYTHING in order to bring us something without soul.

The only reason I would recommend this is if you want to learn what NOT TO DO if you want to make an full length animated feature. Any other reason you're wasting your time.
