Annie Hall (1977)
Eh, not a big fan
This movie wasn't particularly interesting in my view, it was a romantic comedy and just failed to really grab my interest. The camera work was decent, nothing extraordinary, and the sound was okay as well. Overall I wouldn't watch the movie again just because it's not really a genre I like to watch and I didn't really like the acting of Diane Keaton in this either. Her character just really annoyed me and I wasn't really interested in her at all.I rated it a 3 out of 10 because Woody Allen is a funny and great actor, that's the only part of the movie I enjoyed though were Woody Allens jokes, they got some giggles out of me and made the movie at least somewhat watchable.
Do the Right Thing (1989)
Awesome story with a great ending
This movie was great. It had some funny parts, some serious parts, and overall it told a great story. It takes place in New York City and your shown that racism plays a big part in the city and how people act. In one scene a white man steps on a black mans shoe and because of this the black man felt the white man was a racist until he saw that the white man actually lived in a black neighborhood, which just made the black man even angrier. The color and picture in this film was fantastic as well as the sound, I would definitely watch this film again with friends and family because it was thoroughly entertaining and it definitely got a few laughs out of me.
Taxi Driver (1976)
De Niro at his best
Now I may be a little bias in this review being that Robert De Niro is one of my favorite actors; but this film is in all honest one of the greatest films every made. De Niro's character is excellent and entertaining in that he just wants to impress some women and save some from their ridiculous careers. The film is shot both at day and night and features great cinematography and many moving shots because De Niro is a Taxi Driver. The film was shot in color and features sound, overall I'd say this film is definitely a 10/10. Everything about this film is interesting, from it's entertaining plot down to the itty bitty details it's definitely worth a watch.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
No doubting why this film won so many awards; simply fantastic!
This film was absolutely outstanding, but of course it doesn't need any appraise after winning best picture and numerous other prestigious film awards. The film tells a somewhat dark and racy story and features rape, sex, and alcohol. The story was beautiful and featured amazing cinematography and great acting; especially that of Nicholson's character Randle. On top of the wonderful picture the sound was crystal clear as well and provided an all around great atmosphere for the movie. Except for two shots in the film the film featured very bright and distinct lighting, mostly natural lighting as well.
I'd recommend this film to friends and family not only because it's an award winner but because it still thrills today, 37 years later!
Easy Rider (1969)
Great movie... if you're tripping on acid/shrooms.
I really disliked this movie. From beginning to end. It really doesn't have much of a plot or a structure to it, the movie follows two best friends who ride around and sell cocaine. The story lacked a real cause and I couldn't justify myself ever watching it again. The filming and audio was great but the actual story was absolutely terrible. The movie was most likely shot for someone to do a psychedelic drug and then watch the movie because that's honestly the only way somebody could possibly like a movie as terrible as this one.
Like I stated, it gets a 2 out of 10 for having no plot and being an overall terrible movie. Would NOT see again or recommend.
The Graduate (1967)
Hilarious movie with a twisting plot!
I really enjoyed this movie, it tells a great and hilarious story of a "nerdy" college graduate who throughout his college years never once had an intimate moment with a woman. The cinematography is fantastic and the color is very good for a mid-sixties movie. Lots of different angled shots and many shots in rapid succession at different angles. The sound was great as well, all the words and music were synced up and the movie was just overall a great one.
I'd recommend this to family and friends seeing as how it's a funny movie and quite entertaining. Dustin Hoffmans acting is great throughout the movie and this is one of the films that helped to make him a major Hollywood star.
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Amazing story of two people on a road to riches
I just watched this film and must say that it was a great watch indeed, it follows the story of two people, one female and one male, who are "business partners" in the sense that they rob banks and commit multiple crimes to get by in life. The story is very risqué for it's time because it features some perverse scenes that would offend many back in the mid- sixties. The film was shot in color and was captured greatly by the cinematographers. Many action shots and quick shots were edited together and the editing alone most likely took hundreds of hours to make the film perfect. The film also featured some great sound and they were able to generate gun shots and other noises perfectly. I'd definitely see this film again with friends, it's got some awesome robberies and a pretty cool story, on top of that it's got a very graphic scene that just makes the movie ponder in your mind.
The Killing (1956)
Confusing; got lost in the film
I'm not really a fan of this film after watching it just one time. I became very confused with the plot and because of that I lost interest and was uncertain what exactly was going on. The film is strange in that it repeats events a number of times with different outcomes, I got lost during this and because of that I lot interest in the film. As far as the quality of the film visually and audibly I'd rate it an 8 out of 10 for some great shots and being able to capture the horse race sections that must've been very difficult shots. The sound was synced and sounded great as well. I'd probably rate this film much higher If I see it again, I just currently don't like it because I got confused and lost track of the plot.
The Little Shop of Horrors (1960)
Classic horror/comedy!
This movie is definitely a must see and quite an entertaining movie to watch. It tells the story of a man-eating plant that save's a dying business. The acting was great throughout the black & white film and the photography was excellent as well and was able to capture the many different angles and look of the plant. The lighting was great as well even in the dark scenes. One of my favorite aspects of the movie would be how Mushnick would get jealous whenever the girls acknowledged that Seymour was the brains behind Audrey Jr (the plant).
Overall I rated the film a 9 out of 10; I've seen both this version and the newer version and would recommend either one to someone looking for a good laugh!
Mildred Pierce (1945)
Classic mystery with a great lead actress
This film was excellent in that it has you hooked from the moment it starts! The first scene involved a shooting in a noir-type film shot where not much is seen and the camera is placed in clever angles to avoid seeing who did the crime and such. Overall the film had great photography everywhere and did a great job in the many dark scenes lighting up the actor's faces and bodies. A good amount of the film is shot in a police station and what I enjoyed was the seemingly endless angles of shots that were taken in the police station. The camera moved all around to show the police station and the sheriffs at work as well as the detectives. The sound was great as well as all of the special effect sounds (thuds, gunshots, etc).
Overall I really enjoyed this movie and would even consider re-watching it because it's hard to follow the first time around seeing as how the entire movie is a flash back for the most part.
Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950)
Typical noir film, nothing too exciting
Although I can't say much about the story seeing as how I'm not a fan of noir, I will say that the audio track is excellent in the film and provides an eerie flow towards the movie. Another aspect that I enjoyed was the many phone scenes, where the camera would show each end of who was talking on the phone. What I didn't like was that there were many many phone scenes, just too much to be honest. The worst part of the film in my opinion was that there wasn't much action at all, the film was mostly dialogue.
I rated the film a 6 because it had great use of lighting and camera shots as well as sound because it was shot well, however, it isn't the most interesting noir to watch out there.
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Excellent and hilarious musical!
This movie was just all in all great and I'm glad I watched it! I love musicals and this was just another great musical in my opinion. The songs were great and the audio with the movie sounded crisp and clear. The shots were great especially during the songs because the photographer had to follow the dancers around which can be difficult to do smoothly. The photography excellence can be seen the best during the song "Make 'em laugh" where the camera follows the actor throughout the dance and as he jumps on top of a piano and such.
I really enjoyed this movie and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a cheery funny movie, even if you hate musicals you'll still enjoy "Singing in the Rain" it's just that great!
Casablanca (1942)
Great movie with an excellent story line
This movie was a great see; I'd definitely recommend it to family and friends after watching it because it tells an interesting story (which is hard to find if you're looking for a drama). The photography was excellent and uses many different types of shots to really expose the film as much as possible and give you good views on conversations and the actions by following the 180 - rule. The sound was in sync and sounded great and not muffled or distant like some movies seem. I'd just like to note that I saw the original black & white film and it had a great picture.
Overall I rated it an 8 out of 10 because it was was a great movie however it just doesn't tell as good of a story as many other drama's that I have seen including "Seven Pounds" and "Forrest Gump".
Penny Serenade (1941)
Great/ Very sad movie
This whole movie is full of disappointments and sorrow, it follows the trouble of Julie and Roger Adams who are constantly screwed in life's journey. The movie is black and white but has a very clear picture and pretty good sound quality for a 1941 film. The movie is shot mostly indoor so the lighting is adequate. The only complaint that I have for the movie is that it's two hours long. It's a little drawn out and doesn't really need the whole two hours that it fills up. Some scenes could definitely be pulled out so that the film is easier to sit through in one sitting. Overall I rated the film an 8 out of 10 because it's a very sad and developed story, the only complaint that I have is the length of the film.
Jane Eyre (1943)
Fantastic movie, great story!
This film was excellent, it's about a orphan girl (Jane) living with her Aunt who treats her horribly. The audio and visuals in the film are fantastic and really mark the peak of Hollywood. The sound is almost crystal clear (though still Stereo and not Surround sound), and the photography was excellent as well. The story is entertaining and keeps the watcher hooked because Jane has such a difficult and sad life. She struggles to function well in society at a young age because her Aunt introduces her to a harsh boarding school. She ends up being a very successful young woman and all in all it makes a great story.
I rated the film a 9 because it's very interesting and marks a great time in Hollywood, the film look and sounds excellent which at the time was rare.
Stagecoach (1939)
Excellent classic Western!
This movie was a thrill to watch and definitely worth a watch. It has all of the aspects that you want in an old western film. It just has a rustic feel, and it's in black and white which; frankly, every western should be shot in. It's got guns, prostitutes, alcohol, all the tools needed for a fun movie. The action shots and all of the photography was excellent, the photographer was able to catch some great angles and views of the scene that gave you a great perspective of what was going on in the film. The sound was great as well, the guns and all of the sounds were realistic and with no delay. The only complaint is that some points of the film were very dark, mostly inside the actual stage coach; but it's not dark enough to where it ruins the film, it was just darker then I would've have it. The acting was great, John Wayne played a great "bad guy", Ringo, and Claire Trevor played her part as Dallas exceptionally.
Overall I rated the film an 8 out of 10 and I advise people to see it if you like Westerns! This is definitely comparable to Westerns released nowadays; if not, better!
The Lady Eve (1941)
Funny movie, a little slow
This film was definitely a funny film, and being a screwball comedy it was expected what would happen. What the film lacked in my opinion was a more interesting plot, screwballs such as "My Man Godfrey (1936)" have an interesting and developed plot. This movie was great; it just didn't match up to other screwball comedies I've seen. As far as the quality of the film goes, the photography was excellent and a clear picture was present the entire time. The sound was on par as well, nothing outstanding but it was enjoyable and you can clearly hear the characters. Overall It's a great movie; it just needed a more interesting plot in my honest opinion.
I rated the movie a 6 out of 10 because it was visually great as well as providing great audio, it only lacked a more interesting plot; however, you may feel otherwise! It's worth a watch for sure, so if you haven't seen it, start watching it and see if it will interest you!
The Woman in Black (2012)
A true horror film, had me biting my nails the entire film!
This movie was magnificent. It's so dark and just sets such a deep tone that it really pulls you in to the film. I can't say I've ever been as scared as I was when viewing this film, it's almost like being in the perfect haunted house. The film mainly takes place in a dark creepy house on an island, the house is haunted and every little thing in the house just makes you jump. The music and sounds used really get your heart beating fast as well. The film used many vintage toys, added some cobwebs, and ended up making some of the scariest and most horrifying toys you will ever see. Radcliffe's performance is something to really be applauded as well, this is truly his first breakthrough film since Harry Potter. Hopefully Radcliffe continues to do films such as TWIB because he truly is a great actor.
Dracula (1931)
Amazing photography; slow story line
Firstly before I review this I must say that I do have a great amount of prejudice because I've always been a fan of horror movies and this is really before 'horror' became the horror that it is today. This isn't the type of movie that will scare you nowadays, back in the 1930's it may have though. The photography is excellent and the picture is very clear throughout the movie. My main complaint is the acting. The movie is very drawn out and slow, instead of Dracula being dominant and being a scary blood sucking vampire he instead moves very slowly and gives the victim time to simple run away; but -- unrealistically the victims always seem to stand and scream and allow Dracula to bite their neck instead of simply running away while he is slow lowering his face to their neck. I'm guessing that this is the way it is because of the ratings board and censorship back in the 1930s. Today there are obviously much scarier movies and because of that this movie just didn't seem to frighten me whatsoever.
Overall I rated the movie a 7 because the sound and photography are excellent; and it's one of the earlier horror movies. Truth is, without movies like the original Dracula; today's horror movies would be much different.
My Man Godfrey (1936)
Hilarious screwball comedy for sure!
This movie will keep you with a smile on your face from the title to the ending credits. The movie follows the typical screwball comedy setup where a man and woman who are complete opposites somehow end up together. The film is shot beautifully and takes place all over Manhattan. The photography is excellent as well with little to no skips at all and features a very clear picture as well. One of the most interesting aspects was that it seemed the studio created some sort of fake Brooklyn Bridge painting or model to make it seem like it was really in the distance in several scenes because to the naked eye it seems a little to good to be the real bridge; however -- the water underneath the bridge is moving, and on top of that bridges are going under it all night long! Besides the excellence in the photography the sound was amazing as well, the characters would sometimes yell outside the view of the screen but it would be muffled enough to let you know the yell was far enough away and not relevant to what was directly in front of view. Overall I highly enjoyed the movie and would definitely recommend it to people and thats why I've rated it an 8!
Groundhog Day (1993)
Fantastic classic; a must see!
This film was one of my most favorite films as a kid because it always made me smile and really got me thinking. The movie is interesting because it explores the ability to figuratively restart a day and live the same day over and over again. With a comedian like Bill Murray the film is for sure a funny one and will get plenty of laughs from any age audience. The filming is excellent so is the editing especially because they had to recreate the same scene over and over and over with slightly changed characteristics.
Overall I rated the film an 8 out of 10 because it's a great film and what's really nice is that it's most certainly one that you can watch with your whole family and everyone will find it funny!
Forrest Gump (1994)
Greatest movie of all time
It almost seems pointless to write a review for this movie because by now I would like to hope that everyone in the world has seen this film. This is truly one of the greatest films ever made because it explores many important events in American history and explores the life a seemingly slightly retarded young man who manages to make out in life even when all odds were against him. The filming is fantastic throughout the film as is the sound and the orchestra. The orchestra actually does a lot in the film, just the sounds of the violins and the moments that the orchestra plays seems to bring audiences to tears. It's really unexplainable how touching this movie is, honestly anyone if you're reading a review and have never seen this movie I advise you to watch the movie and you will love it. Nothing is more heartbreaking then the ending of this story so if your not one to like tear-jerkers steer clear because even as a tall muscular man I still break down in tears every single time.
I'm honestly surprised this movie isn't rated a solid 9.5, I give it a 10 because everything about it is perfect, it's got probably the biggest Hollywood actor of modern time starring in it (Tom Hanks), and truly is a phenomenal movie.
Scarface (1932)
Good photography; drawn out story line
After watching this film I have to admit that I watched it twice because the first time I fell asleep. The sound is excellent and well represented as are the gun shots and numerous other sounds. The photography was also excellent because the picture was very clear and not grainy as I expected it to be. The part where the movie fell short was what was in my opinion a long drawn out plot. I would've like more action and less talking because the action is what really sells the movie. The production and professionalism in making the movie I don't question whatsoever it was only the plot that could've been spicier; which is most likely why the film was remade and the remake Scarface with Al Pacino is the infamous "classic" while the original is forgotten.
I rated the film a 3 out of 10 for great photography and sound; besides that the plot didn't interest me at all because it was just played out too long. I'd suggest the remake of Scarface with Al Pacino before the original any day of the week.
I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932)
Excellent movie with an amazing story line
This film was honestly amazing. I didn't expect much from an old Black & White film but once you start watching the movie you just cant stop. The photography was excellent; the shading and how smooth the movie was really made it enjoyable because I figured the film would be shaky and grainy like most older films but it's not at all. They could re-release this film in 2012 and not do a thing to it and it would be a box office hit, and honestly I don't see why not! The story line was one that had much thought put in to it; it was both entertaining and sad; the movie was meant to be what seems like a tear-jerker, and they really show it in the last few seconds of the film when the main character back away from what was his lover in to the darkness and tells her that she will never see him again.
Overall I rated the film a ten and it gets a ten because I found it VERY entertaining and honestly it goes up in my list of my ten favorite movies of all the that includes such movies as Forrest Gump (which i personally believe to be the greatest film of all time).
The Navigator (1924)
Funny movie; could've been more fast paced
This movie had a great soundtrack that most definitely added to the movie because I for one didn't care for the story line too much. The photography in the movie was fantastic, no complaints there because the entire film was beautiful visually. My main complaints in the film are that some of the scenes seemed to drag on for way too long. An example would be in one scene where the man and woman are looking for each other, the scene goes on for what seems like five minutes of both characters just running around the boat unable to find each other; I personally believe that something else could've been done with this time because that particular part didn't get a chuckle or a smile out of me. The film was great for it's time and okay for a silent film, however; I do feel that more dialog could've been used. Probably the most magnificent part of the film is that it takes place on a boat, because there were no green screens back when this movie was created that means that the film was actually shot on the vessel and that they most likely had to take many many shots because they were out on a ship and only had a limited time until they'd reach land. Overall I rated the film a 6 out of 10 because it was great visually and had a magnificent sound track however the plot could've been better and less corny.
