A Christmas Story (1983)
. . . Like watching French "Nihilism" and calling it "Joy to the World" !
Rather than watch this, I'd catch a French film on the "meaninglessness of life" . . . as it's the most Awful, non-redeeming Christmas Movie I've seen since I was a kid in the 50's ?
Struggling with the current seasonal ads for 24 HRS. NON-STOP MARATHONS of TCS, I'm continually baffled that this movie, which focuses mainly on continual disappointment, sad outcomes, and cruelties (of life, kids & store Santas) is joyful or FUN to anybody other than people who love cruel jokes. When I saw it in the theaters, I came joyfully expectant, and left very depressed. If you're looking for a movie with a gentle spirit, inspiration, or any signs of the loving spirit that Christmas means . . . AVOID this if possible !!! I finally read through the IMDb comments and found LOTS of people hated this, also * . . . . while 95% + think it's the greatest movie there is! I'd rather stick myself with a cactus for 2 hrs . . .
Oh well, another example for celebrating the variety of people on the planet !! As my Dad always said: Thankfully people DO like a variety of things . . . if they DIDN'T, everything I liked to do, would be so crowded when I got there, that there'd be no room for me !!
[. . . another happy city guy, with a small town boy inside *]
It Came from the Sky (1999)
.....and fell flat on it's face.
Wow! I can't believe I could ever be bored enough to sit through this picture in it's entirety. Nearly every line of dialogue seemed to drop on the floor, as this picture seemed to be trying to emulate the quirky charm of a small independent film,
but it was more like torture. I'm afraid I've stunted my development by making it half way !
While there might have been a redeeming ending, had I been able to suffer through it . . . . . I couldn't, with the lame dialogue, hugely awkward silences, and complete lack of flow to it. The supposedly romantic "How (Lloyd) & (Bleeth) Met" story was stupendously bad. I couldn't begin to find Lloyd or Bleeth right for their parts. A talented director might be able to decide whether this was supposed to be funny, or sad, or dramatic . . . but to me it was just AWKWARD drivel.
- This may be the worst TV movie I've ever seen. . . . what were they thinking ?
