The Odd Angry Shot (1979)
A fantastic, underrated film that is well worth seeing.
This is a fantastic film, that shows the troops during their good and bad times. One minute they fight in the heat of battle, and the next they are drinking or causing havoc. This is a great film, and although it has a few errors, and mistakes factually it is a great all round film that has great acting due to good casting, a good story line and script.
The soundtrack is great. The music suits, especially at the end as the film closes with the song "Who Cares Anyway" by Normie Rowe. Alas I have not been able to find this song anywhere on the Internet or to download so I think it may have been just made specially for the film and not released which is a shame as its a great song.
Other than that it is well worth buying, preferably on DVD. It doesn't cost that much and it is an enjoyable film.
Heartbreak Hotel (1988)
A nice interesting, entertaining film
I have seen this film a few times, and I really do like it. Its a nice fictional story, set in the 80's. By this time Elvis obviously didn't die young, and is in his 60's, or at least getting old. Johnny helps his mum who owns a hotel. When he see's his mother in distress, he and a friend kidnaps Elvis in a bid to gain her happiness again. At first Elvis is furious, but he soon begins to live and let live, and a friendship and bond ensues between them all.
It is a pleasant film, and enjoyable. May not be to everyones taste, but I liked it.
With a good soundtrack, and good acting, it really isn't a bad film.
Drop Dead Fred (1991)
A nice and funny all round film, with a meaning to it!
This is a good film. On the one hand it has slapstick moments, and childish things that still make you laugh and smile.
Rik Mayall plays Drop Dead Fred very well, as an immature but loving friend who makes you laugh.
The story is pretty easy to follow, which is a bonus. Though beyond the silliness, the slapstick humour, and the childish but very funny jokes, there is a deeper meaning to all of this. It is telling people to lighten up in life for once, and not to take life so seriously. In this film the main character also fights her inner demons, which is her over protective, and controlling mother.
Plus it is giving the message that once in a while, its OK to let out the inner child in you and have fun.
I won't give it away, but this film does have a really good ending. It is a film with a few recognisable faces like Briget Fonda who makes a cameo, and Ron Eldard who in recent years has played Dodge in the film "Ghost Ship", and CWO Michael Durant in the film "Black Hawk Down."
Also is the actor Tim Matheson who has been in many films and TV shows. One of which was the series "The West Wing", which he starred in for the first few series in which he played the Vice President "John Hoynes."
Overall this is a fantastic film that can be enjoyed on many levels. First just watch it for the comedy and brilliance that is the acting, the timing, and the story, then enjoy it for its deeper meaning. As it really does make you think a little.
Bravo Two Zero (1999)
A good film, portraying the bravery and courage of a few good men.
Firstly to anyone who thinks they know so much about this story, and think lightly of these men.
I would just like to say that this film and story is under rated, and surrounded by people judging these soldiers even though they themselves have never lifted an air gun or a paint-ball gun, let alone fought or served for their country.
The SAS, and the armed forces is full of people willing to put their life on the line. To leave their warm beds and spend hours, days, or weeks in uncomfortable terrain, so stop your whinging!
Because without them you would be using that fat arse of yours to run away like the phucking cowards you probably are.
Either way i liked this film.
I mean for all the military jargon and slang you may have to watch it a few more times, and get someone in the know to translate, but it is a good film.
Not that much money was spent on it, and the special effects are limited, but it is a good portrayal of their life in Hereford, England, where the SAS is based, to Iraq. There is also some funny moments to lighten the mood.
If you really want to get to grips with the story, read the book "Bravo Two Zero".
It has much more detail, especially about the gruesome torture they were put through.
Other books include:
"The One That Got Away", by Chris Ryan. "Soldier Five", By Mike Coburn and "The Real Bravo Two Zero", by Michael asher.
Each give their own opinion, so its hard to tell who is telling the truth.
Either way the film is good, and some people might have to watch it more than once, but it is enjoyable.
You laugh and maybe cry and anything else as you follow them.
Sean Bean plays the part well, as do the supporting cast of unknown and small time actors. One of those actors has since done well.
That actor is Rick Warden, who plays Tony. He has since been in "Band of Brothers", and the TV series "Rome", showing on BBC one.
Either way watch this film...it is good and a good watch.
Recommended!
The Evil Dead (1981)
Fantastically Gory...
Well what can i say, i mean what it lacks in script it makes up for in gore in pure 80's horror fashion.
With a small budget, up and coming director Sam Rami did not have a lot to go with, but he certainly did well with some of the camera shots.
Rami, who has since directed hits such as Spiderman and Spiderman 2 used simple techniques to get the right effect. For example the effect of the camera creeping through the bushes was not used as much when this film was made, and the production team managed this by attaching the camera to a plank and they had someone running around with it.
The script isn't great, and to tell the truth there aren't a lot of lines anyway apart in the first half an hour or so while the story is set, but as time goes on there's more bloodshed and less chat, which is good in a way.
There are very few special affects, and the while the appearance of the zombies is good it is basic, but as i said before, where it lacks in story and script it makes up with gore and pure violence.
Shortly after it's release it was banned for many years, and even after it was re-released there were many scenes that were missing, luckily not for ever. For example a scene where this woman is led out into the woods, wherefore the trees and plants come alive and rape here, called " the tree rape scene", or another scene where a woman gets a pencil stuck in her ankle.
Luckily though the full version is being shown on television, as it was last night where i watched it.
Towards the end as the number of characters diminish due to being killed or turned into zombies, the amount of talk lessens which leads the way to a climax of gore and violence.
This is a good film which is enjoyable despite a few faults, and i am looking forward to seeing the two sequels.
