Harlan Coben's Shelter (2023)
4 stars is being generous
There are parts that are actually pretty good - but mostly this feels like YA trying to be edgy. In the words of detective Del Spooner "stop cursing, 'cause you're bad at it". I realize I've been out of highschool for a while, but none of the characters feel real.
Speaking of not feeling real, none of the actions events seem real either. "I foiled an attempted kidnapping - so I decided to hide the girl in my home instead of calling the cops"
Also, I'm 100% fine with gay and lesbian relationships - but if they don't have chemistry they don't have chemistry.
I get the writers are in strike, but that doesn't mean we should hire teenagers to write the script.
I Survived Bear Grylls (2023)
What?
What is this? Survivor or X-Factor? Either way it's dumb, and has nothing to do with surviving in the real world. I guess Bear vs Real World Road Rules is next... Oh wow need another 400 characters I guess, so here's an Irish proverb as written by chat gpt:
"An té a bhíos fial roimhe, bíos fial ina diaidh." An té a bhíos fial roimhe, bíos fial ina diaidh. Is iomaí fear a thug a chuid roimhe, agus thug sé níos mó ina dhiaidh
Still not enough? Ok, tell me how chugging animal urin (which dehydrates you more) or traversing a rope with a fish in your mouth, helps you survive longer in the wild? The fact that it is sponsored by Mountain Dew tells you everything you need to know.
Rescued by Ruby (2022)
Solid heartfelt movie
The very definition of a "feel good" Hallmark movie. Sometimes that's what we need though. The acting was a bit over the top, and the script was a bit corny: but overall a very fun film to watch with the family.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Pick a Lane
Too stupid to be real, too real to be funny.
Some say this is meant to be a spoof. Maybe someone should have told the writers.
Apparently the reviews have to be longer to be posted. So some advise - I kept watching to see where the craziness led. You don't have to.
Stowaway (2021)
Not as bad as everyone says. Not as good either
**Spoilers **
I don't normally review, but thought this needed to be said: yes him being "stowed away" and no one knows how or why it dumb; but if you can get through that the first two thirds are good. The acting is amazing and the visuals are stunning. It is so refreshing to have a scifi were people don't act dumb. You don't need space monsters or sudden psychopaths to make a good space movie (see The Martian). Each character was actually likable (something we have less and less of in shows nowadays). The spinning to make gravity does work... Just not on a small scale like that. Still I can forgive that because at least they stayed consistent. Someone commented on how it was dumb the hatch door fell off: but that is because it was on one of the spinning ends. The had gravity at the ends and none in the middle, which does make sense. And yes, the pacing was a bit slow but it made sense for the story.
That is, until the ending. What felt like them running out of budget or a way to wrap it up that didn't just have the stowaway killing himself - they opted for a high stakes solar flare that didn't act like a solar flare. It took two of them to bring the canister back the first time; but the second time, more tired and suffering radiation and punctures to the suite she was able to get there, get down the side, get the canister, get back up the side, and make it all the way back - by herself? Also wouldn't the canister be highly radioactive? And how are they going to turn the liquid oxygen back to breathable oxygen?
So, just like their all import solar array, this movie was riddled with holes by the end. But I still enjoyed it for the acting and stab at a space drama without aliens.
The Rhythm Section (2020)
Wait, wut?
I think they should retitle this movie: "Wait, wut?". That's all I was saying this whole movie.
