The Last of Us (2023)
I don't get the hype
I have not played the game, so I don't have that base for comparison... possibly it's bigger fun to watch the series that way. As a standalone series this is weak... The story is well known... we have seen it like 1000s of times: apocalyptic world, one survivor has the cure who could save all, but there are lots of obstacles.
Actually this recipe could work fine if the atmosphere would be good. But it's not there. The infected look funny and when they appear on screen. All the "bad people " trying to stop our heroes are mediocre, not violent at all, basically just waiting to be killed by the good guys. There are no surprises, dark secrets... the story is linear. The show is overall too colorful, doesn't bring the vibe expected from an apocalyptic series... and even there's the full episode which is about 2 teenagers going around in a mall, having fun at night... Wasting of time.
This is 5 stars at best. I really don't get the hype. If you want to see good apocalyptic series you should look elsewhere.
No Time to Die (2021)
Romantic-action movie, but not a Bond one
I walked out of the cinema fully disturbed. I'm big fan of James Bond movies... watched all of them, multiple times. I write this review to get you ready for some big disappointments without spoilers.
This movie is more of a romantic movie with some action in there... and even the action scenes are lame: The big evil Land Rovers turn upside down when running through potholes and there are magic doors in some scenes where an unlimited number of enemy soldiers are getting through and die randomly. Those bring me back to the times of American Ninja with Michael Dudikoff.
Bond's opponent is Remi Malek in the movie. His motivations are unclear throughout the whole movie... he's dramatically underused... has like 15 minutes of screen time where he tries to justify why he's there with no success. It's a shame that a great talent like him gets such a poor role.
Throughout I had the feeling that someone stood besides the director and randomly told: "Hey... don't forget this is a Bond movie, so let's put an Aston Martin there!"... so they did, and they thought that's the key to success. They even managed to ruin the music... Hans Zimmer is great, but David Arnold would have done a better job within a day or two. I really have the feeling that the people who made this movie had a lack of understanding what a Bond movie is about.
The only bright spot is Ana De Armas's appearance. She has like 10 minutes in the movie, those are the best 10 minutes... style, humor... as you would expect in a Bond movie. I hope she'll have a great career!
A Martfüi Rém - A Sorozat (2020)
Amazing travel back to a time where "serial killers did not exist"
I saw the movie in 2016. It was definitely the movie of the year in Hungary... now Netflix releases it as a series with approx 30-35 minutes of extra content to show more of the background story, give more chance for the characters to build on the screen and the amazing world what the movie makers rebuilt to build the scenery.
For the Hungarian viewers this is a real time-travel. You can see the factory at Martfu where the legendary quality shoes were made... Factories like these barely exist here today. It's amazing to see the scenes, the colors, the clothing, the cars... I grew up in the 80s... amazing... Going back to a world of total control, but where people were still happy and felt safe.
In this picture... something terrible happens, what no one expects... in this world serial killers are just not supposed to exist. Period. .... The tension is built up great... first you don't really know who the killer might be... the actors are good... they do everything to bring back those times and to tell you the story of one of Hungary's most notorious serial killers.
There's no sugar coating of the topic here... you see the monster basically hunting prey in the small town... no Hollywood feeling... gray... said and terrible. What reality was exactly at that time.
A great movie overall cut / turned into an interesting series. I'm looking forward to seeing the reviews from outside of Hungary.
