La grande bellezza (2013)
Pretentious and tedious nonsense
What pretentious, tedious nonsense about nasty, unsympathetic, and shallow characters.
The movie seems to consist of a series of disconnected and bizarre scenes, with the assumption that this is somehow meant to be deep and meaningful.
I was looking forward to the movie, given the reviews. But, really, it was just awful.
It gets one star for the beautiful shots of Rome, and these were very beautiful. But it can't redeem the rest.
It's dismaying that some-one could produce this nonsense.
Redwoods (2009)
If you like gay romance, then this is for you
I liked this movie, even with its flaws.
I've read the other user reviews, and I agree with those who see the problems of the movie but acknowledge there is something here, something worth watching.
The flaws. There are some unexplained scenes, due to editing I guess. Some scenes seem a bit stilted. The two male nude scenes were gratuitous, seemed like they were just put in there. I didn't understand the relationship between the lead & his (mostly absent) partner, who seemed reconciled towards the end.
But there is something good in the film. There is some sparking chemistry between Bradley and Montgomery - and while their relationship develops fast, there is a real connection.
So, on the whole, if you like gay romance and you are willing to overlook the flaws, it's worth a look.
The Falls (2012)
Heartfelt & moving
I was moved by this heartfelt film. The dynamic between the two leads is well shown, and they both give very good performances.
The major theme of this movie (to my mind) is how people struggle between who they are and their religion (or at least their community's interpretation of religion). This movie depicts the Mormon community and how it responds to gays.
One thing I liked about the movie is the ending. I'm not going to say too much, except that I am tired (and aren't most of us) about the gay guy dying or losing out or something bad happening. The ending was skillfully done, realistic but somehow hopeful too.
This is definitely recommended.
The Trip (2010)
Really bad & very disappointing
This was truly an awful movie.
The two leads were sad, obnoxious characters who drive around the north of England for an all expenses paid trip, reviewing meals. They do a lot of impersonations, which was OK to start with but by the fifth or sixth time it was past wearing thin.
One of the characters while more annoying, at least seemed decent enough. The other I just couldn't abide.
I didn't understand the point of it all.
Even the landscape, which should have been beautiful, seemed dingy and washed out.
Somewhat disconcertingly, you hoped there might be some crisis that might put an end to this miserable trip, just so the movie would end.
