Ocean's Thirteen (2007)
The recipe for making a bad film.
I saw this on the Cannes Film Festival last week and it was definitely the worst film shown. I think Ocean Eleven was a fair film considering the type of genre. Ocean Twelwe sucked big time. So I went to this with the expectation, that Ocean Thirteen would suck just as much. That pre-expectation was not fulfilled. This is a perfect recipe for making a bad film with a billion dollar cast. Now Al Pacino played as always brilliantly, but that was thanks to his talent, NOT Steven Soderbergs actor directing, because he didn't get anything out of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon or for that matter the rest of the cast. They didn't tribute with anything besides their smiles, good looks and their presence. The film lacks of feelings, emotions, renewal and charm. All I saw was a scene by scene in an coincidental order trying to tell a story that didn't make sense at all. Every time a new scene played, the audience has to figure out time, place, meaning, character relationships in a matter of seconds, before the film changed scenario again. The audience have to figure out, what happened immediately before the scene, because that is not explained and have to figure out why and how they did so. All very confusing. All in all I think Mr. Soderbergh, Mr. Clooney, Mr. Pitt and all the rest of the cast, should put a lit on this trilogy and try to renew themselves with a new concept to make money.
Den sorte Madonna (2007)
Another lame danish entertainment.
So once again Lasse Sprang Olsen has made another lame danish action comedy with the support of the danish film institute. Horray! Like all the other films he's been in charge of, this follows popular danish actors who talk with corny punchlines during, apparently, the best stunts on danish soil... Or, the best we can do. Denmark have still a lot to learn about action sequences! Bad timing, bad editing and bad ideas! And during those, we all have to laugh at the dialogue! Will you ever grow up, Lasse? Now it has been 8 years with one idea duplicated into 5 films. Same poor action, same insignificant and corny story with a gentle touch poorly actor directing. I mean, Tuva Novotny is properly a good actress and I know Anders W. Berthelsen, Nicolas Bro and Birthe Neumann are. But why are they so horrible in your film? You got all the possibilities with the support of the danish film institute to make something original and serious, and then you spoil it away on your infantile humor. You should actually try to see and understand American action movies before you try to copy them and make them danish!
Ocean's Twelve (2004)
My brain blocked this film.
My friend asked me, if we should see a film. He suggested "Ocean 12" and I thought: "hmm... I didn't like the Ocean 11 that much, but It couldn't hurt to See this". Five minutes in the film, I thought to my self: "Have I seen the beginning before and maybe turned the film off?". The more I saw, the more I realized that i've seen before! When the film was finished I actually realized, that i've seen the entire film before and forgot about it completely! Before we did put it on, not even the title rang a bell in my memory. The so-called "funny-incident" when Bruce Willis and the "fake/real" Julia Roberts meet = totally forgot about it. Now! The reason I told you this story is: You can watch a movie and afterwards if it haven't made an impression on you, the day after you will rather forget you ever saw it. But in my case, my brain erased every proof in my memory, that I have watched this film a all. The first time Ocean 12 tried to connect with my brain, my brain simply declined every frame of information it produced and it properly produced endorphins in large amount to stop the pain and bringing me into a happier place. The second time I saw it, I was poorly entertained. Afterwards I wished, that my brain could remake the same reaction. But unfortunately I'm doomed with some vague memories from one the worst images printed on celluloid in recent years.
Nordkraft (2005)
A modern drug film set in Denmark
Nordkraft is new in it's genre in Denmark. A story of people with a serious drug abuse problem and how they fight for their love. But it's not new it is genre for the rest of the world. Obvious to the viewer the director is inspired by such great films as "Requiem for a dream", "Trainspotting" and numinous others. The editing, extreme close-ups of eye pupils, the choice of music, the movement of camera and the idea of attaching the camera to the body "camera-to-face" while running, is similar to "Requiem for a dream". Despite the fact, that it is not a original in it's craftsmanship, the film is actually pretty well done. But maybe the success should belong to Jakob Ejersbo, the writer of the novel? It has a slow start, because it uses the first hour for introducing the characters. Which is a bit to long. But when the story finally kicks of, it's exciting and thrilling. The acting can sometimes be a bit pourly and over the top, but Claus Riis Østergaard as Allan levels it up.
All in all I think is a great film, but it would have been even better, if only the pace of the story in the beginning were faster and if it was shorten a bit. Enjoy.
Cellular (2004)
Despite obvious plot holes it's entertaining to the max!
While I watch this movie I thought to my self: This is probably directed by same director as Phone booth, but I was wrong. It wasn't Joel Schumacher but it was the same writer Larry Cohen who wrote it. The tempo of this movie is incredible. Every obstacle are overlapping a new obstacle. The main character Ryan are probably having the worst day ever and he never get's any piece. And you feel poor for the guy. It's thrilling and exciting! But unfortunately the movie have some serious plot holes and general mistakes, which of cause is disturbing for the viewer. But despite that I found it entertaining and I liked watching it a lot. But it's understandable if people don't like this movie, I don't blame them! But all in all, I will recommend this movie, if you want to be entertained, but don't expect a masterpiece. I think I just was in mode for such a movie that day!
Purgatory Flats (2003)
This is what would happened, if Oliver Stone not directed U-turn
The Movie is okay. Meaning that I don't regret watching it! I found the acting purely and the most of the dialog stupid ("oh no, this was my grandmothers bible!"). It's sort of bad remake of U-turn. A man arrives to a desert town out in nowhere, meets the wrong people and falls in love with the wrong woman. And off cause get's involved in something, he thought he could leave behind him. The movie is quite predictable and there is really nothing new in it. When it's finish, you didn't really care. Most of the characters are stereotypes, specially Brian Austin Green!! All in all just another movie from the states, but okay entertaining on boring Wednesday night. IMDb vote: 4/10
