Las chicas del cable (2017)
Story transcends Border and culture
I watched Cable Girls and found it riveting and fascinating. Having the settings of 1920's Madrid allows the actors and set pieces to have lavish costumes and lush surroundings. The story, even though is set in Spain is about goals and aspiration, stories that transcends borders and culture.
So even for a person like me, watching in an Asian country, Singapore, can understand and sympathize the drives and motivations of the actors in Cable Girls.
I am not familiar with Spanish TV and if the production value and acting talent in this series already got me hooked, then I will gladly give Netflix more of my money to watch more Spanish original production to be shown to Asian viewers.
The Expanse (2015)
Most Underrated Sci-fi TV series of 2016-2017
This SYFY version of The Expanse is simply one of the best American sci-fi drama now playing. The TV series adheres close to the plot points in the book series by authors James S. Corey but with certain creative changes. But damn does it deliver! Not only do you see space battles, but there is political intrigue and incredible world building that makes it a believable future! The actors gives real weight and range of emotions and you can really feel the tension in the room from the belters or whenever there is debate or arguments going on. You can really sense the belters truly believing they are oppressed and desperate. YOu can really feel the sense of entitlement of Earthers feeling like they are the elite and they should own everything. Season one was incredible. I know that Season Two will be explosive given that the plot points from the Book series will ramp up tensions really fast! I do hope that the twists that will come will be satisfying to both readers and non readers alike.
Second Chance (2016)
Has ethical issues but is an okay police drama show
I kinda like this police procedural shows and I thought the show was not bad. But I'm surprised that the show just glosses over and does not address how invasive and creepy the "Facebook" facsimile aka Looking Glass company is with access to Web cameras and private data.
My other problem is that once the "twist" has been revealed, how interesting would the show continue to be because then it is just another police show.
But still right now it is a decent show with an okay pace, action sequences and an okay relationship development between the characters. I'm hoping though there would be more back story to the characters as the show goes on as right now there is only a window dressing done to show us viewers what the characters are.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
#TheForceAwakens is something old, something borrowed, something new, something blue.
But that's what makes this J.J Abrams Star Wars movie so great. It borrowed heavily from the original trilogy, making us all feel like kids again and feeling nostalgic. It lays down the same groundwork, the same plots, and allows us to explore the same galaxies/ environments and settings for this galactic space drama for the upcoming sequels.
Yet it introduces us to brand new characters that will carry this franchise forward to the new future of star wars.
I love Daisey Ridley portrayal of Rey as a down on her luck scruffy scavenger who had a very tough upbringing being all alone and forced to survive based on instincts. I like John Boyega who provided a convincing portrayal of a storm trooper that has gone rogue and who have renounced the First Order evil ways. I like how Lupito animates the smuggler queen, Maz Kanata with her intelligence and yet warmth towards old friends and those in need.
Overall the plot points are very similar to Star Wars: A New Hope and it plays out almost the same way except with less star ships? (Whats up with that?)
It leaves me wanting more and leaves me with that warm fuzzy feeling of being back in my childhood and relieving that star wars grand story and setting again to be in a fantasy world.
SO yes it is absolutely amazing and I loved every minute of it and i would highly recommend the movie to everyone.
The Interview (2014)
Ridiculous over the top but funny
Nobody is stupid to think this is a great and funny movie or that it will win awards. Far from It. But the jokes and the on screen relationship between James Franco and Seth makes it singularly over the top funny. Bring out the popcorn, sit back and relax!
To put it simply, it is full of butt jokes and jokes worthy of "Dumb & Dumber". And for some strange reason there are so many references to Lords of the Ring jokes thrown inside. I guess one of the writer is a big Lords of the rings fan. Also the costume designer who made the suits for James Franco character in the movie looks like he/she came from making the costumes from Zoolander. Michael Kors would be proud of those suits and accessories lol.
Look basically this movie is the sh**ts. But it is funny. Jokes are way over the top but it is funny. And it is something of a satisfaction to watch a movie that overcame the obstacles it had and to stick it to the man. Unless it is a huge PR marketing stunt in which case it is a huge success albeit dangerous one.
Let's Be Cops (2014)
Predictable fun but with a heart
Let's Be Cops is one of those comedies that follows a predictable pattern. Two losers losing who they are set out for some fun. And what started off as a joke got people really in trouble so they try to redeem themselves by saving the day.
But you know what, sometimes, It is nice just to have comedies that is plain out crazy so we people watching the cinema can forget about our humdrum lives for just a few hours and that is what this movie did for me.
Is it predictable? Yes. Is it funny? Eh, so-so. Is it entertaining? Yes! The movie at least gave the two main actors aka 'good guys' some back story that is interesting enough for you to care about them. The jokes are stupid but funny. The movie does not overwhelm you full on with too much crazy jokes that you cringe. Don't get me wrong, there are cringe worthy jokes in the movie but at least they are spaced out well enough. There is a suspension of belief and realism here in this movie to be honest but maybe sometimes, that is good. It can be nice to just imagine one day just doing the things the characters did in the movie even if you know you can never do it and not get into trouble.
That is why I think it deserves at least a 7 out of 10 even though there are a lot of bad plots and lame villains that pulls it down.
Bob's Burgers (2011)
Every new episode brings a warm and fuzzy feeling to my toes
Ever since The Simpsons became stale, the Family Guy losing its touch, American Dad is just another Family Guy spin off, Futurama no longer exists I live to see Bobs Burgers for Sunday nights. Because it is funny. Because it is willing to be all out crazy yet links the plots together logically at the same time.
But mostly because I love to see what new devilish plot does Louis Belcher has in store for the episode.
Bob's Burger plot twists, crack jokes, fart jokes and interesting character developments makes it more interesting to watch than other Animated sitcoms and the fact that four seasons on and it is still funny only means it has the legs to continue to be as good and long lasting as The Simpsons. Seth Mcfarlane and Matt Groening are not the only producer/writer that can develop a good animated show. Bob's Burger shows that there are other just as bright and funny producers/writers and I know I will be tuning in to watch every new episode of Bob's Burgers as i once did religiously for Family Guy.
