Unholy (2007)
Unholy is the most original horror movie since 'Saw'
I am surprised at IMDb's low rating of this movie. With all due respect, its low rating is representative of the IQ level of those who rated it so poor. They would rather see a movie with cheap thrills, a bigger budget, and more gore.
The first misconception by people is that this is a horror film. It is not, nor does the film mislead you into believing it is one. It is a psychological thriller. It is for people who actually want an intellectual experience when watching a movie. Reel.com's review is the perfect example of how I feel about this movie. All the other negative reviews doesn't make much sense. It's almost as if trying to make an original movie for a change- very rare these days- is something bad and not worth it.
I will reveal some spoilers for the morons who said it was boring and didn't make sense. Martha was brainwashing herself and performing experiments on herself to be a caring mother while she really was an evil Nazi who would kill without warning. The evidence is all in the pudding and the fact that at first viewing, we sympathize with this cold-blooded monster for the duration of the movie is a testament to the film's direction and writing.
I definitely feel that this movie should at least be rated in the 6's range on originality alone. I recommend this movie for the people on the other end of the IQ scale- aka smart people- since this movie is obviously being butchered by those who would rather watch Scream or Freddy's Nightmare.
Kudos to the acting as well. For such a low budget film, you are amazed that this movie didn't hit your local cinema with the great direction, writing, and acting. Please don't be fooled by the rating by IMDb. This movie is worth it. I actually recommend buying the film since a first viewing on a rent will not do this justice.
The Pink Panther (2006)
Watch the movie. Don't judge a book by its cover!
Funniest movie of the year. I'm surprised at all the 1's voted for this movie- I know for a fact the majority of 1's are from people who haven't seen this movie. Don't judge a book by its cover and certainly don't judge a movie by its trailer! The funniest parts were not from the trailer! In fact the movie can be classified as funny non-stop- the excitement of Steve Martin's portrayal has to rank up as one of the most unpredictable and funniest since Jim Carrey's "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective." I do hope this movie does good at the box office and has a sequel because I'd love to see Steve Martin as the Inspector again. He was perfect for the part.
And I have to say, Hamburgers have an affect on everyone, not just the Inspector. Though, I think not many people have a problem saying it like Clouseau.
Army of Darkness (1992)
The Right Approach
The special effects in this movie are not grand and it was best that Sam Raimi made comedy more of a priority than horror. There is nothing more funnier than seeing Bruce Campbell shoot down skeletons with a shotgun and crack one-liners.
"Army of Darkness" is the biggest of the Evil Dead movies. The budget exceeds the first two movies combined and it shows on screen. Bruce Campbell is shown in a different light again, this time as a ruggedly, handsome superhero. This approach is the best of the trilogy and displays Campbell's wide range of skills as an actor.
One complaint about "Army of Darkness" was the three mini-copies of Ash. The scene took well over twenty minutes and definitely took away what basis of humor the film held. The scene signified the comic horror movie to an overt humor fiesta. Thankfully, the film got back on track after a few more scenes.
By excitement, this movie ranks first. But by craftiness, Evil Dead II knocks out the rest. One must think why this intriguing, exciting horror series died out while others like Jason and Michael Myers has continued. Let's just hope Raimi gets Campbell back for one more ride because it would be worth it.
The question mark I had in "Evil Dead II" about the chainsaw man in the 13th century has finally been answered with an exclamation point and Bruce Campbell brings it with a punch. Worst of the series but that should not be taken as a negative.
Evil Dead II (1987)
Best of the Trilogy
First and foremost, I want to say as a horror fan and a person who is intense with details, Evil Dead II is not a remake. Yes, Evil Dead II did take a lot of things from the original but that should not be taken as a negative. Most sequels from its originals do not stick with the formula, making the sequel not as enjoyable. When someone thinks of the best sequels, nobody can give you more than Terminator 2 or Godfather Part II. Evil Dead II fits in on the list. Bruce Campbell breaks out and shows his heroism in this movie. He is on the offensive, not the defensive like the original. With this in mind, it is clear that the spook appeal is gone from the original. Even with this said, Evil Dead II still contains the occasional jump-out-of-your-seat thrills.
My suggestion is to not come into this movie thinking you will be scared out of your wits like the first one. Evil Dead II is rather a joke on the movie and horror itself, than a Halloween or Friday the 13th film that never seems to lighten up. Sit down and watch Evil Dead II for the enjoyment. The ratings for this film do not lie- IT IS THE BETTER EVIL DEAD movie. In wake of the Spider-man sequel coming out soon, you should not be worried. This movie is a good reminder that Raimi can pull of a better sequel that matches or surpasses the original.
The Evil Dead (1981)
Fine Original
THE EVIL DEAD is a scary horror film. It succeeds as one of the best in the genre because of extreme low budget made to great use in gore, action, and directing. Sam Raimi, director, has even said this is one of his best films. There is not a lot of flaws one would expect for a B movie like "Evil Dead". Instead, the strengths outweigh the weaknesses. Bruce Campbell is not as heroic as the sequels would show, but he still is great as a defensive fighter against the dead. It shows he is more vulnerable and at the time period, (79-81), nobody knew what to expect from Bruce.
Evil Dead is good to watch as the stepping stone to future horror movies. I'm sure Jason, Freddy Kruegger, Halloween, and other horror movie chain directors have used a page from Evil Dead with its mix of comedy and horror. I recommend you seeing Evil Dead II however, out of the Evil Dead trilogy, because it is a pictureque remake of this movie and a lot high-paced. Most importantly, it looks better on screen as the DVD for Evil Dead is still not as clean as one would expect.
