Call of Duty (2003)
Nearly as good as Medal of Honor, but not quite.
The problem with this game is that it has to try and beat Medal of Honor : Allied Assault, and to be honest it doesn't. Don't get me wrong it's a great game and graphically it's arguably better than MOHAA; but MOHAA just plays better. I don't why because both games could have used the same game engine as far as I know. Both games have similar missions (both are based around the Normandy landings), the same look, the same array of weapons, infact COD could have been an expansion pack for MOHAA and most people would have hardly noticed, they are that similar. The only major difference between these two games, is that in MOHAA you actually get to participate in the Normandy landings (which is one of the best levels in any game ever!). Whereas in COD you are involved in pathfinder missions (your sent ahead of the invasion force). You do get to play on three sides in COD though (American, British and Russian). Although you don't get to choose which one you play, as you have to play the missions in order (the ability to choose your missions and side would have probably made this better than MOHAA). You start out playing as the Americans, then British, then Russians (6 missions each), once they are completed, you then have one final mission for each. Each of these missions are pretty much of the same type as the ones in MOHAA, so if you've played MOHAA you'll feel right at home. In fact that is one of the things that annoys me slightly about this game, it's SO like MOHAA that you'll find it fairly easy to complete (I only bought it yesterday and I've already completed all the American missions, except the final one, and all the British missions except the final one. All this in just under 3 hours WITHOUT cheating).
So this game really is just a clone of MOHAA, which is a good thing, because MOHAA is such a great game, but also a bad thing, because it really doesn't offer anything new. If you really loved MOHAA and want some more of the same, get this while you wait for MOH:Rising Sun. If you haven't played MOHAA then go get it instead of this, as the Omaha beach landing mission is worth the price alone (think Saving Private Ryan, but actually being part of it!).
Call of Duty, a great game, but to much like MOHAA to stand out.
Postal 2 (2003)
You'll love it and wet yourself laughing.........
But after a couple of hours the novelty wears off and what your left with, is a standard FPS game.
The real selling point of this game, is it's non politically-correct attitude, other than that there's nothing else to this game.
Yes it's great fun being able to urinate on people and watch them throw up.
Yes it's funny to be able to stuff a cat on the end of your shotgun and use it as a siliencer.
Yes it's funny to be able to shoot the c**p out of religious fanatics, rednecks, tree loving protesters and parents against video game violence.
And yes it's even funny hearing people (and your character) swearing all the time.
BUT after the novelty wears off, what are you left with? Not a lot.
The basic premise of the game is you have certain errands to run each day (things like pick up the milk, cash your pay check, urinate on your fathers grave, that sort of thing), but unfortunately things always go wrong (like being attacked by the parents against video games, just after you have been fired from your job with a Video games developer). The errands themself are all quite original and funny and do make you wonder at times how the programmers really think. But there is one HUGE problem with this game, that makes it almost unplayable and that is the loading times between different sections of the map. Now on some errands you have to cross the entire town, which means you'll have to go through 3 or 4 load sections before you reach your goal, and go through 3 or 4 load sections to get to the next. This in itself is pretty bad programming, but for each one of these loads to take 2-3 minutes each, that's completely unforgiveable!! Now I know it's not my PC, as I've got a pretty high spec one (XP3000+, ATI 9700pro, 1.5GB DDR, and Maxtor 7200 rpm HD's), so I checked the net and found out that everybody has the same problem, but there is a patch that reduces this loading time, which I downloaded and applied; but it didn't seem to change anything on my copy. Oh well, never mind, eh?!
Postal 2 is a really funny game and an original take on the first person shooter game, but besides the very adult humour there is nothing else here that hasn't been done better in other games. Buy it for the novelty value only, otherwise get something better like MOHAA.
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Andy & Larry, you cheated us!!
Guys, if I had wanted a doughnut I would have gone to the bakers and bought one and it would have only cost me 20p, not £6!!!
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS* You see the ending to this movie takes us right back to the beginning of the first one, like a doughnut it just goes round and round until the two ends meet again. Just like a bad horror franchise, you know without question that there is going to be another movie after this one. Trilogy my butt!! Resolution???!! You've got to be kidding! This is a cop out on the grandest scale. After all the philosophising, the pseudo-religious undertones, the promise of finality, what do we get?? NOTHING!!! No real answers, no real ending and whole cast of criminally under used characters and plot lines.
Nice CGI's though.
This supposed final episode really tarnishes the excellent first movie, as you now realise that it was only supposed to be one movie in the first place, not three. It's like being lost in the city, you keep going thinking that your getting closer to your final destination, only to turn a corner and find yourself right back where you started. You may have seen some wonderful sights on the way, but you're still upset at not actually getting anywhere.
Damn, this film has annoyed me, not since The Blair Witch Project have I been so annoyed that I fell for the hype!!
God damn you Andy & Larry, you cop out MF's!!!!
