The Lost City (2022)
Great Update of Romancing the Stone
Really fun adventure film clearly drawn from Romancing the Stpne. Sandra Bullock is amazing and hasgood chemistry with Channing Tatum. Really fun cameo by Brad Pitt. Daniel Radcliffe plays a fun villian and the Dominican Republic locations are beautiful. Well worth watching.
Norsemen (2016)
Who thought pillaging could be so much fun
Norsemen is a dark and hilarious comedy about Vikings. The humor ranges from subtle and witty to over the top pythonesque silliness. One of the cleverest, best written comedies I've come across in a while. The production values are high, the Norway locations are beautiful and the acting is great. If you are looking for a comedy with some quirky twists check this out.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015)
Everyone should watch this
I have loved this show from the start, but season 3 goes to a new level. This is the best written show on TV, and the cast is amazing, If Titus Burgess doesn't win an emmy this year it would be criminal. The episode where Maya Rudolf hosted the New Jersey telethon might be the single best 30 minutes of comedy TV ever. Carol Kane Jane Krakowski also great. Plus great cameos by Jon Hamm, Fred Armiston Racheal Dratch. This is the funniest show on TV. Watch it
Ash vs Evil Dead (2015)
Brutally violent but still fun
I love this show. Bruce Campbell reprises his role as Ash with humor and a great deal of brutal violence. Thirty years after evil dead two, the deadites return and a reluctant Ash has to fight. Joined by a great supporting cast, Ash embarks on a journey to defeat evil. The results are both horrifying and hilarious, which is hard to pull off. The effects are comically silly but effectively gross. Heads are chopped frequently and chainsaws are often employed in brutal ways to dispatch deadites. Ash spits out funny one liners rapid fire, Rest of cast is great. All of this accompanied by a great classic rock soundtrack. This is a guilty pleasure worth watching.
This Is Where I Leave You (2014)
Not very funny
Despite a great cast this was not very good. The only thing funny was parks and recs John Ralfio as the rabbi. Otherwise it was not much of a comedy. I liked that they used Cyndi laupers time after time in the sound track . Dax Sheppard was funny as the douchey boss. It goes on at least 30 minutes after it should have ended,. Bateman was good. Is this supposed to be a comedy? If so they needed more laughs. This movie was short on laughs long on boring family exposition THe cast was wasted on this crap fest Jane Fonda Looked super good and she awesome so I om=nly need one more line so I cann only say one more time that this is a crap movie
Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
Better than you think
Why are so many people hating on movie? I loved it. It had all the elements of a good western, e.g. the evil guy (ford), the bad girl, the troubled hero, noble native Americans. And it added aliens! This was a fun movie. Harrison Fords performance was a bit over the top evil in the beginning but got better as the film went on. Daniel Craig and the rest of the cast were good throughout. The special effects were outstanding and the aliens were especially evil, not like a cartoon or comical. The romantic interest between Craig and Olivia Wilde was compelling. The preacher and doctor were also great characters. Watch this movie!
Season of the Witch (2011)
Not as bad I thought
Stop bashing Nick Cage. Sure, he was dreadful in this film, but over all I enjoyed it never the less. It reminded me most of the kind of old movies you see on Mystery Science theatre, with bad dialog and bad acting, but still compelling enough to watch. Ron Perleman as Cages sidekick is outstanding, and worth watching. As I said, the story is good with two outlaw crusaders tasked with brining a witch to a monestary in exchange for deserting the crusades. Lots of twists andlots of fighting as you try and figure out if the girl is really a witch. There is also a lot of stunning alpine scenery. I say check it out, you may be surprised as I was. I say this strictly from a netflix perspective or 99 cent redbox. People who are paying 4.99 on cable may want to think about it.
The Eagle (2011)
Surprisingly boring
The book this film was based on, The Eagle of the Ninth, was excellent. This movie followed the book closely, so why was it so lame? It had a decent start with the testudo fight at Channing Tatums fort, then just slowed to a crawl. The poor pacing was only part of the problem. More importantly, none of the stars were believable, compelling or sympathetic. Only Donald Sutherland, in a brief supporting role stands out, and that was more of a comic role. Despite a lot of fighting, the movie was slow moving and dragged in a loot of parts. I wish I had more to say about this film but that tells you how forgettable it is. Shame to ruin a good story.
