Old Man (2004)
Low Budget Snoozer
A low budget Z movie can come up short for a myriad of reasons. I've seen many movies with lower productions quality and worse acting to be sure, but what this video lacks is genuine entertainment. It commits the cardinal sin of any Z movie by not even being enjoyable because of how campy or charming it is. Its a pretty standard haunted house premise with a twist ending. The "scary" parts aren't particularly frightening and even the jump scares fail to deliver. This movie would likely get destroyed if it was ever reviewed on BotW. I truly believe that everyone tried, but it suffered from stale dialogue and a lackluster plot. They were able to finish it and that in and of itself is an accomplishment, but there are almost no memorable lines or scenes.
Kill Them and Eat Them (2003)
Deliberately Campy and Self-Deprecating
This video does a good job of making itself entertaining to those who love ridiculous low budget movies. It's part horror and and part spoof. It's shot with a handheld video camera, so if you aren't a fan of shaky cam, this is not for you.
My biggest complaint is the audio quality. It sounds like they only had the on camera mic, so dialog from across the room is often indiscernible making the plot hard to follow at times.
Even if you don't always know what's going on, it's still entertaining. There are lots of goofy one-liners and nonsensical props. They often times go out of their way to to point out how little they had to work with whether its commenting on the child's microscope set or their guns which are very obviously held together with duct tape.
The soundtrack is solid and the infection animations are entertaining. For what this was and considering the budget they obviously lacked, I had a good time watching this and telling coworkers about it.
The General (1926)
A Real Gem
I set out a couple of years back to see if I could watch everything on the top 250. There have been movies on the list I was very underwhelmed by, and there have been those I have loved. This is a movie that I would have never just watched had I not been going through the list, but it is now one of my favorite movies. I had seen a few couple of silent films before seeing this, mostly Charlie Chaplin, but this introduced me to Buster Keaton and it instantly made me want to go find as many of his old films as I could. While I liked a great many of them, The General still stands above them all. I have shown this movie to friends and family who have never watched silent films and, despite their reservations, they have all loved it. It takes a while for the movie to get going, but once it does the stunts are amazing considering Buster performed them all. Highly recommend.
