Midnight Movie (2008)
Killer from a movie escapes the screen.
I am really not a fan of horror films usually. A friend actually had me watch this movie and I can't say I regret it at all. For a B-movie horror film, I thought it was done really well. The plot wasn't too complex, but it was still fun. The acting from the main characters was a lot better than what I expected, and the suspense kept you on the edge of your seat. Somehow the smaller abandoned theatre seemed to expand whenever the characters were running away from the killer, but maybe that was because you also had the world of the film to escape into every now and then. Overall, I thought this movie was pretty awesome. I don't know how many more horror films I want to watch, but I'd definitely follow Jack Messitt and the other actors to see what they're doing.
Viva Riva! (2010)
A 'neighborhood kid' returning to his hometown brings some baggage back with him.
I caught a small screening of this film and couldn't take my eyes from the screen until the final credits rolled. A 'neighborhood kid' returning to his hometown brings some baggage back with him. Filmed on location in Kinshasa, this film makes you say 'Did they really just do that?' over and over. Riva may not be the best guy, but his attitude about life makes me respect him. Overall, I would call it a gangster flick set in the Congo with greed, corrupt government officials, and a dash of romance. You can also expect the usual twisting plot with plenty of action, sex, and alcohol. Nothing is left to the imagination. If it happens in the story, you get to see it.. all of it.
Bride Flight (2008)
A story of three women and one man whose lives will be intertwined until the end.
Going into the screening of Bride Flight, I definitely thought it was going to be a Dutch Notebook. However, I was quickly dissuaded from this notion not too far into the film. Bride Flight can easily be placed in its own category of an intelligent, romantic story. The complexity of each character's life makes you wonder which storyline is your favorite even if they all tie back to each other. The acting and plot line are strong and although the film is over two hours, I enjoyed every minute of it. I wasn't a huge fan of The Notebook, but this is a film I wouldn't mind watching multiple times, no matter how long it is. I'm hoping everyone involved in the process of this film appear in more films I can see in the States.
