Incantation (2022)

Really? That's it
21 July 2022
I nenver leave reviews but this had to be said.

After all the high praise I was excited for this movie.

Boy, am I disappointed.

It was predictable, felt lacking in many ways, the build up wasn't there (which really removed the sense of dread), the horrible sound effects were OTT which kept pulling me out of the story.

Honestly, only people with trypophobia would find this terrifying.

Encounter (III) (2021)

Beautifully acted

I didn't read any reviews for this movie before watching, and I'm glad I didn't. Although it might not be your classic si-fi, I believe it was marketed like this for a reason to keep you guessing.

The acting was brilliant by the boys. Their performances are genuinely one of the most realistic for children I have seen.

It clearly isn't for people who are after a shoot-em-up alien flick (see the 1 star reviews), but much more a commentary on mental health, treatment of ex-soldiers, and the lack of empathy from the general system.

This movie is not a no-brainer.

Brilliant grownup horror - Leave your stupid at the door.

I don't normally write reviews, but this show is brilliant. I thought it would be extremely lame (like most TV shows horror genres) or be all about sexy brainless characters. And I know that my lowered expectations may have made this TV show better (doubt it) but I LOVED it.

The characters are fleshed out and REAL. They are flawed and relatable - even the children! The behaviour is just believable and that is something that is missing in this genre. This isn't a spooky show, but there were times that I was unnerved (which is saying a lot). Another favourite aspect: Every time I expected a cliche moment and it would all be ruined it just didn't happen. I don't know how to describe this show, but it is not for a dumb audience. So much to think about. So many themes. Just watch it!

Ghosts of Europe (2016 Video)
3/10
Really?
18 September 2020
Watching ghost-hunting type shows is always a dilemma. You really want something to happen but you don't want it faked. But it is possible to have an entertaining spooky show when nothing happens. It is all about the backstory and research that can contribute to the 'vibes' of a place. These people paid a lot of money to travel around Europe to random (some interesting) places to make this show and it mainly them spending 30 minutes in a abandoned building that doesn't have much of a back story (and if it does, it is rather poorly researched) before they freak themselves out and run away. Nothing is captured, nothing is seen or heard, but they all manage to see and hear things. Nearly all of them have cameras and constantly say they see things move... so where is the footage.. Adult babies with cameras in spooky locations - if this is your jam... go for it. But it is not for me.

It was better than expected but certainly not a home run.

Warning: Spoilers
I giggled a little in this series and was even able to ignore some of the plot holes but MAN Nora is so ANNOYING! I strongly dislike her and her whiny issues about moralities while she is using people all around her. I prefer Ingrid. At least she is what she is.

Quicksand (2019)

Superb acting, some flaws.
10 April 2019
After just finishing watching this show (binged of course), I had to turn the TV off and close my eyes and breathe calmly for a while. Not just because there was an excellent final court scene, but because of the absolute-INSANE-UNRELENTING SHAKY CAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to keep looking away so I wouldn't get sick, which is an issue if you have to read sub-titles. Several stars lots for the camera work alone... Apart from a few other nit-picky holes in the plot (no spoilers), I have to say that the acting was divine. I was completely taken along for the believable roller-coaster ride of Maja's experiences . I did find the characters a little shallow and obvious, but then again maybe it was because I couldn't see their faces for long because the camera man had too much coffee that day....?? Who knows.
