Ok Justin Timberlake isn't my favorite, I wasn't an N'sync fan and I always loathed what he did to Britney Spears. He did a decent job in Trolls but that said, he was good in the movie. Solid enough to play his part. Enough to be Del Toro's supporting actor? Meh. He just made it. Just. Then again, Del Toro doesn't need support.
All the other cast were - well, just there including Alicia Silverstone. She played a supportive wife, a lack luster role at that probably due to the zero chemistry she had with Del Toro which felt awkward which said chemistry wasn't essential to the film. They had to fill the movie I guess and part of Del Toro's wife being her was to help your mind play to the direction they were taking you in. Some thing she said was very deliberate and it just added to what you think you know or might think you know.
That said, Del Toro carried this whole movie on his back! He is so underrated and deserves far more recognition for his creative and acting genius. Honestly, the entire cast did their part efficiently enough to not distract you from the story, but to an extent they were forgettable although believable and even still Del Toro stood out even though he was largely quiet and the others were considerably present.
Michael Pitt played another superb dark and greasy role.
The ending was a little weak compared to the pace and increasing intensity of the movie. I expected a jaw-dropping ending but by that time I had already put the pieces together which is why I only gave it a 9.5, although the twist is shocking enough for this smart neo noir film.
I will also say that the directing and cinematography was fantastic as was the music that really set the tone of the scenes. This film sucks you in from the beginning, cataloging every little detail and hanging on every last word trying to remain unbiased and undistracted....until.....
