Avengers: Endgame (2019)
The Second Half alone gives this movie a 10
Avengers: Endgame, right off the bat, throws its audiences for a loop with some very unpredictable twists that make you question what will happen for the rest of the movie. The first half of the movie felt fairly disappointing considering what I was expecting and, at times, had a more comedic tone that felt off and unnatural. The disappointing aspects of the first half are entirely made up for and more with the second half. The second half is truly EPIC. The second half might be some of the greatest sci-fi and action ever to be made. The way it ends is completely heartbreaking, but yet sweet. The way the movie pays tribute to the previous movies in this universe is spectacular. One last thing to mention, the first part of the credits is so beautifully designed. It might seem like a weird thing to praise, but it is great.
The Dirt (2019)
Great Screenplay, but not much else
The Dirt is a fun movie to watch. The Dirt has a great opening and a great screenplay which save the film from being bad. The performance by the cast, at times, can be good, but overall, the performances are lackluster. I'm a big hair metal fan and was looking forward to this movie, but the hair and makeup didn't look realistic, especially the wigs. The movie tells a great story and has great music, and these factors keep the movie entertaining which saves it from being a bad movie. A theatrical, bigger budget version of the script would make a truly fantastic movie.
Us (2019)
Really good film, but not Peele's best
Jordan Peele's Us is pretty good, but it has flaws. The movie has a great cast with an especially fantastic performance by Lupita Nyong'o. Once again Peele offers a horror movie with great cinematography and a suspense-filled score. The movie is great until the end starts approaching. The scene that reveals what's going on is very weirdly written and shot, and even with Lupita's great performance in the scene, it feels very off. The premise and idea of the movie is great, but the movie isn't as good as it's idea. Overall it's a really good film, but it isn't Jordan Peele's best.
Get Out (2017)
One of the best directorial debuts ever
Jordan Peele's Get Out is an instant classic, not just for the horror genre. A lot of people dislike this film because of certain racial undertones, but that just adds to the suspense and uncomfortableness to make a great horror movie. Even if that is ignored, it still makes for a great piece of cinema. The acting is truly unsettling, in a good way. The great cast provide suspenseful performances, and when combined with the great cinematography and haunting score, this becomes a fantastic directorial debut for Jordan Peele.
Steel (1997)
Where to Begin
Steel would've been bad as a TV movie, and the fact that it isn't a TV movie makes it even worse. The movie is filled with terrible action, terrible one-liners, terrible acting, and even more terrible acting. The overall design of the movie is bad. Nearly everything about this movie is bad. In all honesty, the overall story arc is pretty good and with a much better screenplay there might, potentially, be a good movie in there somewhere. The overall story being decent and one clever batcave one-liner save this movie from a 1 star rating and bumps it to 2 stars out of 10.
The Return of Swamp Thing (1989)
So Bad, It's Fun
Jim Wynorski's Return of Swamp Thing is a bad film but can still be quite enjoyable in the right mindset. The movie's plot is weird with some pretty bad acting throughout. The relationship between Swamp Thing and Abby is very rushed with zero character development towards the relationship. The two boys offer some laughs, but they are pointless to the story and add unnecessary scenes and plot points. The movie is fairly bad, but it is very self aware. It knows its bad and it doesn't take itself seriously which saves the movie to make it a fun watch. The Return of Swamp Thing is a campy, bad film, but its self aware which makes it so bad its fun.
Swamp Thing (1982)
Mostly, a victim of its time
Wes Craven's Swamp Thing is a victim of its time. The plot is pretty simple which makes it a little boring at times. The movie's action scenes are very campy, and, other than the final fight, they do not really ruin much of the movie. The acting of Louis Jourdan, Adrienne Barbeau, and Ray Wise give the movie a few great character moments to save the film from being a terrible movie. With its mostly delightful campiness and good acting, Swamp Thing becomes an enjoyable film to watch but far from a great film.
