Bellflower (2011)
It made me feel.
I'm not giving away anything more than can be determined by the cover of this DVD. This is a beautiful and grimy piece of art that I enjoyed very much. An enthusiastic cast can compensate a low budget in some cases, like this one. Some people feel things very intensely. Disillusionment is the strongest of emotions displayed in this movie yet the entire range of human emotion I noticed. The vision was just right for the limitations of budget and resources. A car is one of the nicest gifts you can give a friend unless you drive it straight to Hell with them. A unique kind of Hell is depicted in this story. It is one we all would like to visit, and one we would want to escape just the same. Dreamers who want something impossible are attracted to each other in intense and sometimes disastrous situations. Beautiful, chaotic, and possibly accidentally created art is a joy to experience. I feel that this flick will not gain full appreciation until many years from now, when the majority of cinema is done in a similar way. Long after big budgets and tired, over payed and cracking faces are a thing of the past. Art changes its self on shifting plateaus of time and perception, and art changes people between heart beats. I was changed an hour into this flick and I am so glad I took the chance buying this DVD. It is among my favorites, on the top shelf. Well, maybe the second shelf because of the overplayed and unrealistic fighting sequences. Other than that I can say that I felt things i didn't expect to feel. Although it is far ahead of its time, it is also very current considering styles of dress and music. Hemlines rise and fall as does music on the charts but amazing vision like this is timeless and unyielding in its greatness. Excellent.
The Task (2011)
Surprisingly Watchable
I was weary of watching this because I wasn't familiar with many of the actors or the companies that had produced the movie. I watched it anyway and 20 minutes into it I was pleased to see classy visual fanfare and decent acting. The premise is actually somewhat original, considering that it is virtually impossible to create something that is truly original at this point in cinema history (unless it is something bizarre) so I was pleased with the way it was done. Capitalizing on the intensity and increased realism of hand-held cams and surveillance video, it was tastefully executed.
There is a lot of trash constantly being released out there, but this does not file under the trash category in my opinion. The producers might have overestimated their capabilities due to budget, but they did an excellent job with what they had to work with. I was impressed that they didn't rely a lot of the gore-factor for shock value. The movie was genuinely frightening without excessive blood and brutality. With a better budget, I could see this being a huge hit.
I Am Number Four (2011)
Balding high school student fights space punks
Kids will love this latest indoctrination! A suspiciously balding high school kid who looks older than his dad shoots light out of his hands, among other special things. The space punks who want to invade earth are chasing him around the country, trying to murder him and his father. Its good family entertainment. Although it made me physically ill, I managed to finish watching it. The formula is solid for a decent flick but there is something about the choice of actors that disturbs me. I couldn't get past the fact that the "high school kid" is a 45 year old actor. I wish I hadn't watched it but I was bored and it was at least good for a good laugh.
