Echo 3 (2022)
Taut thriller rich in detail and poetic visuals
I loved this series. Unlike anything I have ever seen. Interesting espionage/military angles, with some layered geopolitical themes. The editor really makes his mark here, crafting visual poetry and maintaining urgency in the action scenes. Compassionate choices in showing a multitude of perspectives with the rebel factions and civilians caught in the crossfire. Also it gave me major splinter cell vibes at times which is a good thing! Strong performances by the three leads with special mention to Luke Evans whose Australian accent is buried and you buy his southern drawl. Recommended viewing!!
The White Lotus (2021)
Favourite series this year
There is so much here. Great performances, casting, location and writing, It's also deft enough to balance sincere emotions, sharp social commentary and hilarious and darkly comic situations. The whole thing is all about power and balances and how those who wield power try to retain it and those who have none clamour to obtain it. Vacationing, with her solo or with your family is always fraught with emotional peril, and that is represented here, juxtaposed with the breathtaking beauty of the big island.
Masterminds (2015)
Zach is hysterical!
Zach commits 100% to his roles, and gives himself wholly to this semi-true story, exaggerated for comic effect. I love a good slapstick, juvenile comedy especially when it's in the nuanced hands of actors like Galifinakis and Wiig. Hess has made me laugh hard before, and after a few turkeys, I wondered if he could repeat the trick. All I can say is I had a great time watching this one, and I laughed out loud a lot. Good comedies are a rare breed, and Masterminds is among my faves.
Summer Heights High (2007)
The Greatest
I am a big fan of mockumentaries, starting with Spinal Tap. Hard to beat this one for cringe-worthy moments and hilarious quotables. Chris Lilley is a straight up genius, and effortlessly pulls off 3 different characters on this funny and addictive show. It's so packed with moments that you'll want to watch it over and over just to catch it all.
It left me with so many questions about Lilley, and it's been tricky to get any answers about the man behind the madness, on the internet at least. If you dig the Office or Chris Guest, this is for you. You're welcome!
