Flippin' Exes (2019)
Among the worst of the Flippin' shows
We love house flipping shows, and while this sounded like a copy of Flip or Flop Nashville (ex's working together) we gave it a shot.
Typically I believe you have to watch at least 2 or 3 episodes of a show for it to find it's grove, but we gave up after forcing ourselves through the first episode of this car wreck.
The good news. These are both super-telegenic individuals who find and rebuild homes. It's a well known formula and we all wait for the reveal at the end of the beautiful finished product. Along the way there'll be construction challenges, design challenges, perhaps disagreements with an HOA, and the obligatory inter-personal challenges. Check, check, and check... except every one of these felt very manufactured in this show, with no real drama.
The bad news. When one of the best parts of an episode is how bad a driver one of the stars is and how she keeps parking ON a curb, you know you're in trouble.
It started with my wife pointing out in the first few seconds of the show "ew, this is from Bravo?"
The final design was uninspired.with awkward spaces. The foreman took down a wall meant to stay and said you have to 'listen to what the house wants you to do'. Our 'business' owners let it slide.
The woman... well, she ruins the show. She's VERY full of herself and smug, when something doesn't go exactly her way she alternates between throwing a temper tantrum or pouting, and generally making people around her feel bad. Oh, and you're on-call 24/7 to her whims and she gets mad if you can't answer your phone.
The gentleman seems nice enough (but can't drive because of too many tickets??) but overall feels like he's in an abusive relationship with his ex.
Don't waste your time with this one.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)
Gets worse the more you watch it.
** This MAY contain spoilers** As a fan of GI Joe from the 80's - I collected the comics and loved the cartoon - I was understandably hyped about this movie. And, to be honest, I was frustrated but enjoyed it when it was in theaters, and bought the DVD. Also saw the 2nd, and it's DVD as well. But I just re-watched it and I can't forgive how utterly horrible this is. Imagine the creators sitting around and trying to pick between updating the series, using original characters, making this a "backstory" movie (while having the Joes totally in existence), using near-future weapons, and along the way picking exactly ALL the wrong choices! The Baroness was in love with Duke, but went on to be 'bad'? A nano-weapon that needs a particle accelerator before it can be fired. Yeah, those are handy on the battlefield. You can inject people with this nano technology and make them robots with no fear (worthless soldiers). The good news, they made Cobra not complete pushovers. The first fight scene sets the stage that Cobra is professional, equipped with next-gen weapons, and highly efficient. Of course, Joe is a bit better. But some is just stupid. The sonic-wave guns Cobra has is so obviously used so the producers could have people being blown around like leaves. Those armored suits (which of course are ONLY worn by the 2 newest and rawest members of the Joes... duh) are just dumb and seriously unnecessary. If they're so great, why didn't they wear them in the final battle? And then the Baronness becomes good? And Cobra Commanders mask? What the HECK?? Destro's metal face comes in at the end but it's living metal? And he's a slave to The Commander? NO!!!! Sure, update the cartoon, but where are the fangs, the hiss tanks, the claws? Major Bludd? Dr. Mindbender was a genius and built like a brick house - not some wimpy weenie. Geez.... As I said, pick every BAD option to update and that's what they chose. What you're left with isn't a great action movie, with a boring final battle, bad science, it isn't a great Joe movie, poor character development, relationships that just don't work due to no chemistry. When the funniest part is the Baronness telling a lady in a building "nice shoes" - you know you're in for a bad ride. All is not terrible - thus the rating of 4 by me. Showing some back story as flashbacks is nice, making the Commander a science genius who knew Duke was pretty cool. The Baronness was honestly awesome and the best part of the movie. So very, very disappointed. One of those movies I absolutely believe I could have done better.
AmeriQua (2013)
I wanted to like it...
I love movies with some flavor and fun, think of EuroTrip, which is how I found this movie - searching for EuroTrip on Netflix. In spite of the poor rating, I decided to give it a shot. If you want to turn off your brain for a while and watch some amazing scenery, with a potentially interesting story, you won't regret watching this. However, ultimately there's no point to the movie. The lead actor is just weak and can't carry a scene. His new buddy Lele is a strong actor, as are the leading ladies. The other 2 new male friends in Italy are just nasty. Some characters actions make no sense, they never ask for help, characters slip into and out of English/Italian even when they supposedly don't speak the language. The plot gets mixed and pointless, with some odd camera work just to keep you off balance. But the worst sin is it never builds. There's no tension, no sense that it won't all work out in the end. And a building romantic relationship is suddenly just - gone. I kept expecting the main characters to work through everything and to stay in Italy building a life together, but noooo. They split without any sense of loss at all. It has so much potential, but ultimately had no direction, acting, or any redeeming qualities.
The Transporter (2002)
Good enough to buy
I *almost* saw this movie in the theater. I *almost* rented it when it was released. But, it took a week off and someone else owning the movie for me to watch it. And I was, largely, unimpressed. I came away with a great opinion of Jason, but I didn't like the lack of plot, the action sequences, the audio track. All in all, an unimpressive first viewing.
Then, I found myself thinking "I'd like to see that first car chase scene again.", Or, "why didn't i like that fight scene in the bus garage?"... and I ended up buying the movie!!!
The good: This is a straight ahead action flick with good (if not great) fight scenes, a contemporary (if poor) plot, good (if annoying) car-chase scenes. And Jason. This man rocks, and I sincerely hope he continues on to super-stardom so we get HIM with some higher-class movies. Oh, and the settings and scenery are excellent.
The bad: The girl is an annoying, bad actress who speaks so thickly I found myself wondering what she was trying to project. BUT, she's practically a thespian compared to the indistinguishable rumblings of the french police. After multiple viewings, I found myself turning on the subtitles to understand what he was saying!!
Overall, this is a FUN movie that I'm glad I added to my collection, and I expect to watch it more for the strong points!!
