The Squad (2023)
You Won't Get High, But Still A Nice Trip
Three young and beautiful drug 'brokers' try their hand at making a fortune during a spring break week. Only trouble is, well, everything. The local dealers want in, the US cartel wants them out, and their home base support system has been compromised.
Things get unpleasant fast as the double crosses and bodies begin to pile. What started as a fun and sexy movie devolves quickly into a standard gritty crime drama.
The Squad suffers from trying to be two movies at once. The sound, the cinematography, the editing, the sets, the costuming, the casting... all would be perfect for a spring break adventure movie OR a violent drug cartel thriller, but not both.
Enjoy what you can from this mixed bag of sweet and salty tidbits.
The Hunted (2015)
Thumbs Up, if you like this genre.
So an out-of-work actor gets hired to be the star of a vampire-hunter television show, only to find out that he won't be acting. This action-comedy moves fast while covering a lot of familiar ground. Sexy girlfriend who is turning into a vampire, check. Group of nerdy misfits for a back-up team, check.
What really elevates this film is the special effects. Great kills and creative stunts are showcased by high-quality cinematography and audio. Low budget? Maybe. But the money was spent just where you'd want it to be spent.
Some inferior fight scenes and dialogue will leave you grumbling, but ultimately a satisfying fun ride. Would love to see a sequel.
The Weirdsies (2015)
Napoleon Dynamite, Girl Edition
3 awkward young women and their gay best friend (The Weirdsies) begin a quest to finally lose their virginity. How? By hiking down the railroad tracks to find a recently killed boy (a la Stand By Me) and having sex with his hopefully erect corpse, of course!
Sounds ridiculous, right? Absolutely, but with a strong female cast and a hilarious script this movie pulls off the seemingly impossible and succeeds. This slightly more than 1 hour movie is packed dense with masturbation jokes, sex dialogue, and mainstream pop references.
Beautifully shot, well edited, and with surprisingly great audio, this film feels millions of dollars larger than what it actually is, which is a quick little gross-out sex comedy. Certain to offend gentler viewers, decide now if Weirdsies is right for you.
Death Cast (2022)
A horror film without horror, or gore, or direction, or acting
Anyone know how to punch a movie in the face?
I tried screaming at the screen. I tried hitting my computer monitor with a broom. I even set my desk on fire. Sadly, nothing seemed to penetrate the incompetency presented here.
Cut your losses early on this one. There is no pleasant topless scene, no memorable kill, no plot swerves, and no twist ending.
