Gettysburg (1993)
Overly long and boring.
Add to that sub-par acting, wooden characters, terrible dialogue and script, with overweight civil war reenactors and you have a real stinker that would only appeal to the hardest core Civil War history buff.
This movie is totally devoid of any suspense or drama. It would make a good sleeping pill. Even the action scenes are drawn out and boring.
Also, can any performance be worse than Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee, who spent the entire time looking and acting like a deranged psychopath? Yes it can, how about Jeff Daniels and those crocodile tears flowing into that fake beard after he gets the news of someone dying? What a joke.
I did give this movie 3 stars for the unintentional humor provided by the fake beards and lousy acting.
A pox on Robert F. Maxwell for directing this stinker and Ted Turner for thrusting it upon an unsuspecting movie going public. I'm just glad I didn't have to sit through this monstrosity in a theatre. I picked it up for 5.99 in a bargain bin. I think I got ripped-off.
Kaitei gunkan (1963)
Good movie for it's time
I remember seeing this movie as a preteen-ager at a drive-in in the early-mid 1960's. I watched it again years later on DVD and still found it entertaining. I would consider it a Japanese retelling of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.
An eccentric ultra-patriotic World War II Japanese naval genius has built a super sub in secret to restore the glory of the World War II Japanese Empire. However a new enemy has now emerged; an aggressive underwater kingdom called Mu and it's giant monster god.
This is a good movie with a decent plot and some very attractive Japanese women! The bikini shot of Akemi Kita early in the movie definitely wins the award for "The Best Bikini in a Japanese Movie". The Captain's daughter and the Mu Empress definitely rate a 9+ on the "hotness" scale as well. ;)
This movie is classic TOHO made during the heyday of Japanese science fiction. Although the special effects doesn't stand up to today's standards, for it's time they were above average. I remember watching this movie as a kid and being mesmerized by it. The musical score is very good as well.
The American release DVD quality is excellent. It is dubbed in English and about 89 minutes long. The colors are rich and vibrant. A very good presentation for this very good movie.
Definitely worth a look. I recommend it.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)
Little more than a two-hour commercial for corporate America
Terrible movie. It was little more than a two-hour commercial for corporate America. I'm glad I didn't pay for the ticket to see this stinker. A friend who works for one of the company's that advertised in the movie had a couple of free passes and asked me to come along. I still felt ripped-off.
It's obvious the only talent required by the actors in this movie was to act dumb and look stupid. Needless to say I was very disappointed. I was really expecting a good comedy with witty lines and good satire, but it's just not to be with this movie.
I am surprised it is rated so highly. I wonder if the corporate sponsors in this movie has been busy urging their employees to visit this site and inflate the ratings.
I give it 2 out of 10 stars only because the cougar did a better job of acting than the humans.
Save your time and money. Don't waste either on this stinker.
Night of the Comet (1984)
Fun Movie
Fans of 1950's and 1960's sci-fi should really enjoy this movie. I found it humorous with enough action and suspense to hold interest. The ending was great!
Likeable characters, a clever script, very good screenplay, and a decent soundtrack make The Night Of The Comet one of my favorite movies of the 1980's.
I hope it comes out soon on DVD as this is definitely one I want for my collection.
Ice Station Zebra (1968)
Bland "There is a spy in my troop" story *possible spoiler*
This movie got a nomination for best special effects. I guess that shows just how far the movie industry has advanced in the special effects department since 1967. Today's teenager with a laptop could do a better job than the ones in this film.
Most of the story takes place on a nuclear submarine with the last 40 minutes or so at Ice Station Zebra which is on an ice pack near the North Pole.
The plot is simple enough: A U.S. nuclear submarine is ordered on a mission to rescue survivors at a polar weather research station called Ice Station Zebra. However, there is someone on board the sub trying to sabotage the mission and it is apparent that there is something more behind the mission that a simple rescue.
There is not much action until a fight erupts between Borgnine and Brown at the ice station followed a few minutes later by a brief 1 or 2 minute firefight which breaks out between the Russians and Americans towards the end.
From a technical standpoint it was ok I guess. The submarine lingo seemed authentic enough and the gadgetry was interesting. The U.S. Marines were using standard issue M-16A1's, but where were the Russian paratroopers AK-47's? It looked like they were using some folding stock version of a Swedish-K submachine gun.
This is a mildly entertaining movie , but don't expect a whole lot of action and suspense. I thought the acting was ok, although McGoohan was at times "over the top" I felt. It is a relic of the cold war era and if viewed in that context, you won't be too disappointed.
Out for a Kill (2003)
Better than some of his most recent films - barely
After "Under Siege 2", Seagal has made a string of very bad movies. Needless to say I didn't have high expectations going into this one. After viewing "Out For A Kill" I do feel this is one of his better works of late, but just marginally. It is still far from being on par with some of his early films.
I thought the casting was terrible and the script wasn't the best. There was also just too many slow/stop motion scenes which detracted from the flow of the movie. It also seemed to jump around from scene to scene and at times I was not sure what city or country they were in. Overall the film moved slowly for me and I found myself loosing interest at some points. However, I found the martial arts sequences most entertaining and the plot vintage Seagal. The camera work was good, but not outstanding, and the picture quality seemed sharp.
If you don't have high expectations for this film then you won't be disappointed. He is still far from the Seagal of old, but it is apparent he is trying to bring back some of the old Seagal "magic".
The Life of David Gale (2003)
A predictable, agenda driven movie. *Spoiler*
I found this film to be predictable and not very exciting. It did have one redeeming value though, it shows just how far a fanatic will go in furthering their cause. In order to prove that innocents can be executed, an anti-death penalty former college professor sabotages his own trial and withholds evidence in order to get himself convicted of a rape-murder so he can receive the death penalty.
This movie is filled with the usual anti-death penalty arguments and statistics. The only pro-death penalty character in the movie comes off as a bible quoting, dumb, illogical politician.
If you are anti-death penalty then you will surely enjoy this movie as it will be preaching to the choir. If you are pro-death penalty then you best just stay away. If you are neutral on the issue, or are expecting to see a suspenseful, exciting, who-done-it, then you will be very disappointed. Add to it some weak acting and a bad script (no wonder so many actors and actresses turned down the main roles) and you have a disappointing movie.
I gave this movie one star because it didn't even come close to meeting my expectations. I wonder what is next from this director, a movie about an anti-gun zealot who shoots up a day care center in order to get restrictive gun laws passed?
Juice (1992)
Ho-Hum
Mildly amusing and predictable story. Four ghetto friends get into trouble when one kills a store owner. The shooter goes nuts and begins to cap the other 3, one at a time.
If there is nothing else on cable or free tv then it's worth a look. (I wouldn't pay to rent it). It is interesting to see Samuel L. Jackson in an early role but other than that, there's not much there. I gave it a 2/10.
