One thing that Jordan Peele has done remarkably with his movies is create a style that blends original ideas, relevant social commentary, and thrills. It's what made Get Out such a success.
Nope could best be pitched as a "Jordan Peele movie with aliens". And there might be plenty of symbolism and commentary, but its lacking good execution in the main ingredients that make an enjoyable movie.
Pace: Painstakingly slow, 80-90% dialogue. Flashbacks and scenes that feel irrelevant.
Characters: Keke Palmer debuts with charisma, but her motormouth/tomboy character quickly grows annoying. Kaluuya's character must suffer from major depression to be as stoic as he is. Seeing his delayed, mute and calm reactions to chaos when it DOES happen is frustrating.
Tone: The tone is all over the place. Tension is often short-lived and their scenes often end abruptly. Humor when no comic relief is needed. And plenty of calm scenes just watching and talking about horses. And I have little reason to fear the UFOs when the characters appear so calm around them.
Motivation: There is LITTLE reasoning for why the characters should be motivated as they are. Rather than to escape the UFO, there is originality in that the goal is to film the UFO. But this is completely illogical when they get a taste of the death and terror it could dish out. There's some but very little argument about needing to get out of the ranch and save their own lives. "Becoming rich & famous" is no excuse. Also, considering that the ranch was left intact throughout each UFO attack in the movie, it's an obvious shame that the characters didn't take more refuge in the house.
Now, on the plus side...there are a few scenes that held me in suspense. The sound effects are amazing. Some of the scenes and scenery brought to mind War of the Worlds and Cowboys & Aliens. But both of those movies were more consistently entertaining with chills/action, tone and story. If this movie was 40 minutes shorter it could have also been bumped up a star.
