Evan Almighty (2007)
Wholesome family fun
Perfect for family movie night, this has everything you'd want - a wholesome story with a good moral, funny animals, no slow bits and humour for the whole family.
My kids were laughing out loud through the whole thing and I laughed with them. Sure it's silly, but without being crass or rude. Just good clean fun. Apart from the bird poo!
Agatha and the Curse of Ishtar (2019)
Boring drivel - the mystery of how this got made?
As a die-hard Christie fan, I'm always desperate to watch any kind of murder mystery, but this is most definitely the worst of its kind.
I genuinely have no idea what was happening for most of this movie, but that's possibly because I was so bored watching it that my mind kept wandering.
There's no clues or crime-solving here, just endless dull and seemingly random scenes. And the final reveal was both left-field and silly.
Agatha would roll in her grave.
Agatha and the Truth of Murder (2018)
Enjoyable for the Christie fans
A cute idea executed well...writing an Agatha Christie style mystery with Agatha Christie herself as the lead character.
And it's well done too. Follows the standard Christie formula, with plenty of interesting characters and a few clever twists.
The ending is a bit far fetched and it's not as clever as her real stories and with some clumsy parts, but it's a decent addition for fans and an enjoyable watch.
Agatha and the Midnight Murders (2020)
A swing and a miss
The opening credit/scene was so unnecessarily gruesome, I nearly turned it off right then and there. But I needn't have worried about that...it had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the movie. I can't imagine what they were thinking it achieved.
Mind due, if I had turned it off I might have saved myself a few hours of watching mediocre nonsense.
It had the standard formula for a Christie, but that's where the similarities ended. There was very little in the way of mystery, clues or detection and rather just sudden murders, finger pointing and an ongoing manhunt.
I didn't mind some of it, but it the twists were a bit wild.
Murder Mystery (2019)
A modern day Agatha Christie makes a fun night in
I simply don't understand the critical hate on this film. Sure, it's no Oscar contender, but nor is much Sandler/Aniston does and this film does what is says on box. It's perfect for a night in and is a safe choice everyone can enjoy.
The plot may be far fetched, with cliched characters and improbable scenarios, but no more than you'd find in any Agatha Christie novel/movie. In fact, this movie does a pretty good job of rehashing her standard formula and making it entertaining and accessible to a new generation.
There's also plenty of nod's to Christie throughout: her moustached detective, her array of possible wealthy suspects, her red herrings, book references and even a cameo by the orient express. It lacks the finesse and class of a BBC production of her books but, in return, it brings a broader appeal. It is, as promised, a murder mystery.
Sandler plays his standard, crass mug of a character, as usual. Aniston is as much of a delight to watch as always. The dialogue they have to work with is far from poetic genius, but it's pretty standard Sandler fare, with a few unnecessary dick jokes thrown in for no apparent reason.
It's a modern who-dunnit from another time, with plenty of fancy boats, cars and glamour to keep you entertained. I'd feel ripped off if I'd paid cinema prices l, but as it is, this is fun to watch and perfect for a night on the couch with take-out.
2012 (2009)
Everything you'd expect from a disaster movie
I love a good disaster movie - the more things blowing up, exploding and being washed away by giant waves of molten lava, the better. You can check your brain at the door and just be swept away by the action. And that's exactly what you get with 2012.
The effects in this film are great so make sure you watch it on a big screen TV with the sound right up. There's no nastiness or unnecessary violence - the only thing that will have you cringing is the clichés and suspension of reality. But it's all in an effort to bring you a fun movie that will get you involved and sitting at the edge of your seat.
There's a great cast doing a good job with this slightly silly story (at least I hope it is!) but we thoroughly enjoyed watching this.
