Tenkiller (2022)
I enjoyed it for what it is.
Overall I did enjoy this movie. That being said, of course it's flawed. Whether you get something out of this film or not really depends on what you're expecting and what you want. No doubt this had some really beautiful shots. I don't know if the two main stars of this film are actually brothers or not but they definitely worked off each other well and were believable and fairly talented for a low budget movie. It seems whoever shot the movie really knew what they were doing and was able to capture an artsy coming of age feel despite the hurdles.
That being said, the hurdles were significant. Some of the adult actors weren't ideal, the music wasn't for me and it wasn't a very new or unique story. The biggest let down of this movie was the climax. I won't spoil anything but what should have been a big moment was too ambitious for the budget and talent available and it really fell flat for me.
I don't rate the overall quality or mass appeal, just my own enjoyment which gets a generous seven.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
This movie doesn't know what it wants to be.
I was expecting this to just be a straight comedy and after watching it, I don't think it was. There were some silly scenes but they were few and far between. As for the music, there wasn't enough to be a musical either. Many songs just start going and then cuts to dialogue or ends early. I'd prefer to see full songs and performances if this was a musical. And if it's just a drama, I didn't care enough for any of the characters or plot lines. Kinda long and slow overall. Not a bad movie but just felt very lacking to me. There were a few really dumb scenes that I guess weren't to be taken seriously but that totally ruined any of the drama or character development for me.
Young Bodies Heal Quickly (2014)
I enjoyed it!
This isn't a Hollywood movie so you'll be disappointed if that's what you're expecting. It's very slow, and mundane. A bit voyeuristic feeling like I'm just peering into someones average day in their life. Very little dialogue. If you want a slow artsy bizzare movie that doesn't spell everything about for you, this is it. If you want a linear story with pop music and explosions, look elsewhere.
To me this movie is about running from your past. No matter what, sometimes it's hard to hide. Metaphorically and sometimes literally. Sometimes where you end up is worse than where you were running from. I thought this was a really good effort overall on what must have been a nonexistent budget.
La Nave (2022)
Very good movie overall!
I went into this movie knowing nothing about it and I was pleasantly surprised. There's some very beautiful and artsy shots. I am a sucker for unlikely friendship and tear jerker sort of movies and this was just that. Some of the characters and plot felt a little rushed and undeveloped but it was a nice film overall. Acting seemed good in my opinion. Some really cute and heartwarming scenes. Despite the serious and somber nature of this film there was some really funny parts too.
Again, nothing too profound and not perfect but if you are into this sort of movie, you will get something out of it.
Petite nature (2021)
Really well done coming of age drama!
Growing up is hard... even harder if you're from a broken home. Johnny knows he wants better for himself but is distracted by all the new feelings he's experiencing.
I really enjoyed this film. It's well acted and filmed really well. Beautiful intimate shots of an authentic feeling yet dysfunctional family. It's a bit uncomfortable but believable and emotional. Anyone can learn about sexuality at a young age when they are surrounded by such promiscuity. I won't spoil anything but if you're into coming of age movies, give it a try. Anyone that grew up in a less than perfect home could relate. I'm going to keep an eye out on this director; definitely talented people brought this film to life.
The Black Phone (2021)
All around bad.
I was looking forward to this movie but it seriously fell flat. It started out interesting enough. The kids seemed like good enough actors but the writing made them pretty unconvincing. The fight scenes were just embarrassing. I've seen more convincing punches landed on old episodes of Bonanza. No excuses for a multimillion dollar film. As many have pointed out, I wouldn't call this a horror at all. I'd feel it quite mild were it billed as a thriller. No jump scares and the main bad guy (The Grabber) was just silly, not at all believable as a person. No backstory or origin on him at all either.
Then we get to the plot holes the size of the moon. So many ridiculous scenes that it totally takes you out of the film. Fishing a wire through a ten foot roll of carpet and the wire magically coils around a bar like a snake. The window bars fall off and was never heard or noticed by the Grabber? The kid is capable of digging several feet below a floor with his bare hands which is also never noticed. The indestructible toilet lid that magically cuts perfectly straight edges into concrete??? I'd expect better from a kids movie. The Grabber has two houses, one that lives with another person that never questions any of this? Cops come in full force and kick in a door based on nothing but a kids dream? Psh.
Overall a cheap film trying to live off the hype of It and Joker with a splash of Phantom of the Opera for whatever reason.
Bruno (2019)
Very enjoyable film!
I really liked this film. I found it after watching C'mon C'mon which also had Woody Norman co staring. Woody plays his part very well, authentic and sensitive young boy. A good little bit of humor. This has some usual tropes in this sort of film but I'm a sucker for it. If you like the unexpected friendship and tough coming of age genre then you will enjoy this. It doesn't seem this film got a proper release but it's possible to find online.
Peel (2019)
Really good movie!
Really touching storing. Reminded me a lot of my family growing up so very relatable characters. The acting was fantastic. Great blend of humor and drama. Very lovely photography as well.
A Boy Called Sailboat (2018)
Fantastic movie all around!
Maybe not for everyone but this movie was fantastic I thought. I wasn't expecting to laugh so much. Really touching and heartwarming story with a unique mix of quirky characters. The star, Sailboat was acted really well.
You (2018)
Really blown away.
I went into this show knowing nothing but with low hopes honestly. I saw it was recently added to Netflix and figured I'd try it out. I then stayed up all night to watch the whole season. I'm completely blown away with You. Joe is the antihero here I guess and he's such an interesting character and the actor that plays him does an incredible job. Some of the photography is really lovely and new feeling. The writing really grabs me and puts me in a trance. When I listen to his narration I can really understand his power and game he can play over other characters.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
I don't understand the positive reviews.
Maybe this just wasn't for me but I thought it was completely awful. At several points I almost turned it off but I stuck with it. Really wishing I would have turned it off after the second story. The first story was okay but not really sure if it was meant to be funny or not? Interesting character but it felt incomplete. The second story with Franco started out really good but then just abruptly ended with no real point. The third story with the quadriplegic just confused me. Maybe I missed something but nothing ever really happened, pointless. The rest doesn't even deserve a mention. Two stars for the pretty photography at times, other than that, horribly boring to me.
Bad Moms (2016)
Lame, boring, annoying.
Everything in this movie has all ready been done it seems. The story was really lame and boring and I was hoping funny parts would make up for it. It did not. Maybe two laughs the whole movie and the rest just felt like a chore trying to watch it. Poor acting, very poor writing. The worse part beyond all else to me was the music. It felt like every five minutes it cut out to slow motion shots and an energetic pop song. This was kinda cool the first time they did it but than again, and again, and again. It lost all meaning and just got on my nerves. I think the writers even got board with this movie because in about 3 minutes at the end everything fell in place and it was over. Whew.
I am not sure what the target audience was but I probably wasn't it, however I usually enjoy edgy humor and I enjoy chick flicks so I was expecting to like this movie but it fell really flat.
The Colony (2013)
Disappointing
I really liked the idea of this movie and it started out pretty good but quickly went downhill. There were a few decent parts, and you will like this movie if you are into the lame slasher kinda zombie movies but it just wasn't for me. I do not like the intense action, shaking camera, followed by over used tag lines. "Come and get it!" Pretty poor acting especially by Laurence Fishburne. Not very believable and way to much suspense building up to what is already expected. Dramatic over used score that we have all heard a thousand times before in every other slasher/zombie movie. Some of the action shots and effects were so bad it was embarrassing. Punches that weren't any where close to the intended target. Axe hits with no force behind them at all.
