Prayanam (2009)
finally a normal movie
In the midst of all punching-slashing-mashing-crashing-splashing Telugu action movies, I came across a simple, normal, real life story. Maybe the hero and heroine are not the best actors, but I could relate to them. I was very curious of how a normal character could convince a girl with expectations, but whose life wasn't in danger and without showing his almighty power in rescue missions. And that in the same location all throughout the movie.
Dhruv and his friends were funny, especially when having to cope with the heroine's passive-aggressive friend. Hers was the best performance out of all. Brahmanandam was okay too, but nothing exceptional.
The songs were dreamy and pleasant.
At the end, the hero has to answer 7 multiple-choice questions from Harika and all the answers have to be compatible with hers in order for her to consider a relationship. Dhruv chooses to answer honestly and gives her the paper through Brahmanandam's character because she is already on the plane. I was a little disappointed when the heroine returns, but states that none of Dhruv's answers corresponded with hers. I guess I had to expect the normal until the end.
Overall, I was very satisfied, so 9/10
Athidhi (2007)
cute couple, messy story
Manesh was looking gorgeous in this movie, but unfortunately it was a bit lame. I found the plot a little hard to catch on to, but it had some interesting twists. It was fast paced but I thought it was more exaggerated than the usual Telugu films - Telugu movies are already exaggerated (especially the fights), but this one was a little overboard, the hero had both too much intelligence and too much strength. And one thing I hate seeing in movies is then endings in which either the hero or the heroine (or in this case, both) is (are) badly injured but the couple starts to walk somewhere like their love is really enough to totally heal them physically. Kaizer mentioned that Amrita is about to die and she really looked like it, but then all of sudden she was fine when the story ended. That was the last drop of exaggeration for me.
As for the love story, it was a nice one. Amrita and Manesh looked sweet together. The songs were enjoyable.
But I wish I would have picked another movie instead of this one. Watch it at your own risk. You might feel your time was wasted.
Happy (2006)
Lovely and lively - must watch
Beautiful plot that unites Bunny and Madhu who hated each other at first. Their acting is really superb - Arjun's carefree and funny style and Madhu's sweetness and cute fits of anger. I fell in love with the couple, they seem like 2 children being together. And it looks like their love conquered even Madhu's merciless father.
The songs and dances were fascinating and lively, I didn't want them to end. Both Madhu's and Bunny's friends were entertaining. Not to mention Brahmanandam with a once again silly but well-acted role, I never get tired of seeing him.
Also, I liked the role of the DCP Arvind who was very innocent but strong, and used his authority to unite his 2 "beautiful roses". 10/10 for this one
Aetbaar (2004)
Above average, despite some flaws; different plot
The plot line is most welcomed, having the quality of being different from Bollywood clichés. The movie keeps you locked within, in spite of some totally-out-of-logic scenes and character reactions, that don't come with the slightest explanation.
For example, Aryan's appearing at the vacation house. It was out of the blue, I guess the writer couldn't come up with a good reason for him to find the house so he just considered the viewer ignorant enough to go with the flow of the script. Another one is Ria's absolute confidence in Aryan. Even though he shows signs of serious mental problems (e.g. Aryan's burning the painting of Ria when she remarks it's more beautiful than reality; Aryan's chocking Ria after she left him waiting). I mean, come on, I understand that the character is naive, but not stupid! As a naive person she can trust in Aryan when he explains to her that he murdered his father for moral reasons (his father having tormented his mother for years and her mother finally dying because of it) but I don't think she's supposed to believe it's love when someone's stating he'll kill her if she were to go away and when he's actually attempting it at the slightest mistake. And the biggest thing that bothered me was the women's passive state when the man in their family was being attacked. I get it, it's a men's fight and the women are scared and all that blah-blah, but am I supposed to think that a woman would actually stand there dumbly, watching a loved member of her family die? After all, the 3 members of the family together would have taken down the 4 bad guys, one by one, a lot more easier.
All in all, I liked Amitabh's performance in the role of the perfect, protective father that would lay down his life for her daughter's well-being. Powerful, forgiving, persevering, Bachchan impressed me once again, in Dr. Ranveer's character. John was also quite imposing as a madman. I've seen him as being silly, funny, romantic, emotional, but I could never have imagined him in such an antagonistic role. Maybe I should look up more movies of him.
It's worth watching if you can get over some details. Makes you wonder about the depths of mental depravity and a parent's sacrifice for his/her child's happiness.
