Cassiopéia (1996)
First movie ever made by CGI
Being the first movie ever made by CGI (Computer-generated imagery), it's a absurd to see it forgotten and ignored, even in Brazil (I pretend it surprise me, Brazil is a country with no memory that don't value its products). Not even a decent DVD release it had and if you ask around in Brazil, everybody will say Toy Story was the first movie made by CGI, what's a propaganda lie, Toy Story used models made out of clay, Cassiopeia is the first movie entirely made in CGI.
The year was 1992, they had 15 people working in the animation with 17 486 DX2-66 computers integrated. After the movie was completed nobody wanted to distribute it and the film was released during Olympic Games, resulting in no advertise and no interest by media. I'm not a person who believe in conspiracy theories, and I continue not believing because to understand why the movie was ignored, all you have to do is read the history of Brazilian products, more specific of Gurgel, and you will see how Brazil treat its things and also understand why Brazil will always be a third world country.
About the movie, it's great. A very good and interesting history, I really liked the characters, remember we were in 1992 when production started, but the not realistic look of characters give us the sensation of a history happening in other part of universe. I confess I wasn't expecting anything more than the fact it was the first CGI movie of History, but it's a very entertaining movie, there's music and all, inspired in the Japanese animes.
Unfortunately, no english subs, no international release and if you ask about Brazilian animation, this movie won't be remembered.
Boi Aruá (1983)
Wonderful Tale of a Classic Folklore in Brazil
Based on the singing of Elomar Figueira de Melo, Cantiga do Boi Encantado Aruá relates the story of a proud farmer whose power is challenged seven times by the extraordinary appearance of the BOI ARUÁ, the Mysterious Ox, until the final confrontation when he removes his masks and celebrates fraternally victory over yourself.
The feature film "Boi Aruá" matures the language developed by the artist duo, which brings together in the 1980s a small team of people interested in learning animation and with it creates the film that has become a reference in Brazilian animation due to the strength and pioneering spirit in the audiovisual as a representative of the sertanejo imaginary. At this moment, new works are in progress, affirming in the Brazilian animation cinema an authentic scratch that originates in the popular prints that illustrate the string literature.
I thought it was cool, the look is very rich, vibrant, colorful and psychedelic. Striking soundtrack with the characters' zoomorphic transmutations. Certainly for those who read the book the film gets even richer.
Piconzé (1973)
Brilliant and Joyful Animation From a Genious Director
It is the first animated feature film in Brazil in color, but anyone who thinks that the film needs this label to stand out is wrong. It is an extremely fun film, with great and hilarious shots of its rich universe of characters. It has several references to Brazilian folklore, and has a very creative animation, from clippings of magazines composing scenarios, to experimentation techniques that at the time were impressive. It's a beautiful from a witty movie that I enjoy watching!
I was very surprised by the production, and after watching the documentary about the story of director Ipê Nakashima, I was even more admired for all his work and life story until he managed to accomplish this feat, I highly recommend it!
It entered my hall of favorite films with merits, Ipê Nakashima brilliant!
Acabaram-se os Otários (1929)
Historical and important movie for Brazil cinema
I watched the reconstruction of the 20-minute film, made by professors from UFF - (Universidade Federal Fluminense) Rafael de Luna and Reinaldo Cardenuto, along with student Juliana Charleaux, who mount and edited the images. As it is the first Brazilian spoken film, it has a unique importance in the history of Brazilian cinema. This rescue and registration for posterity is very interesting and important. The story itself is fun, and with a lot of music scenes, it is really a pity that only small fragments have survived over time, this demonstrates how important audiovisual preservation is of paramount importance to preserve the film works that are produced in the countries.
Sinfonia Amazônica (1951)
A gem from Brazil, to the world!
This was the first animated movie Ever produced in Brazil, my country. Anélio Latine, the director, made this film all by yourself. One man, alone, draw about 500.000,00 drawings papers for this film.
The movie itself is very good for the time, Black and white, and Tell 7 stories from the Amazon.
This is a must see for any animation lover, a gem from Brazil, to the world!
