8MM (1999)
A fantastic movie
Its so rare I see a good original script get the kind of funding and attention this movie got. Someone had their thinking cap on when they decided to produce this. The cinematography really seals the deal for me on this movie. The script is genius, the acting is great, but the casting stole the show on this film. I have never been so pleasantly surprised with the casting as I was with this movie. Juaquin Phoenix is a master of his craft. He could play Tina Turner and I'd believe it. Is there any limit to his range? Unlike "The Village" where Sigourney Weaver couldn't keep up with him in scenes, Nick Cage does a great job.
This is a true thriller. It doesn't rely on silly CG stuff or fictional monsters, it is about something much scarier. Real monsters. The ones living among us every day. Yes it delves into the world of adult film, but not in a gratuitous way at all. In fact there is very little in the way of nudity or adult material. Just enough to show the viewer what private detective Tom Wells is going through. If you're a thriller fan, this is a must see movie. Watch it, you'll thank me after.
Mister Frost (1990)
Great Movie
For a movie which had little special effects, and no CG stuff this was great. Made back in the days when all you had going for you was good writing, good acting and good directing. Its been so long since I saw this, I can't even remember how the production quality was. I wish this would be released on DVD, though. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Blows away most of the recycled garbage seeping out of Hollywood today by a mile. Great example of a good medium-low budget movie. I like Goldblum in these types of roles. I liked him in the Invasion of the Bodysnatcher remake with Southerland (better than the original, actually) Help me get this released on DVD so our kids don't have to watch crap like 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, and the last 3 Star Wars episodes.
True Romance (1993)
The best movie, ever
Well, this is my favorite movie of all time, and the best movie I've ever seen. I'm kind of undecided on Tarantino's projects. I liked Kill Bill one and two, hated Pulp Fiction, hated Resovoir Dogs even worse. This movie did not use Tarantino's original ending. There is a lot of good info in the 2 disc director's cut. All I can say is if you've never seen this movie, you're cheating yourself. I've had people reluctant to watch it because it sounds like it's a "chick flick." It is anything but. It is a smart, action love story. A unique and one of a kind film. I promise this film will not leave you disappointed, but completely satisfied. Which is all a good movie can do. And when it comes to an all star cast! O M G! There will never be this many A list stars in a movie again. Some of the biggest only have cameos, which I love. (think Val Kilmer and Samuel Jackson.) Watch it as released then check out the alternate ending, I think you'll agree this movie was cast perfectly (like 8MM) written and directed perfectly, and even edited well. (think Indiana Jones or the original Star Wars trilogy editing) Every scene moves the story forward. I never felt like I was missing information or watching filler. I've gushed enough. I love it, you probably will too. Go watch it!
30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010)
About as original as a STOP sign
I can see the next movie in the trilogy, 100,000 screaming and furious people chasing down the director and producer of this turd to get their money back.
More seriously, as a fan of the first film, I was as disappointed as I've ever been by any movie after watching this. During the first film, I actually felt emotion while watching. I felt the sudden jolts of shock and fear of course, but I felt more than that. I felt the hopelessness and despair of the characters trapped in their terrible and inescapable nightmare. I actually FELT their desperation. It was fantastic. As far as I'm concerned the original 30 Days of Night is the only vampire HORROR film ever made.
This Dark Days is a Frankenstein creation of hacked up and reassembled modern day vampire movies (that weren't very good in the first place) This could as easily be Blade 5 or Underworld 4 or Vampires 3 , I was half waiting for everyone to start kung-fu fighting.
This was as much a horror as a pie in the face is comedy. I'm sorry. I wanted to like this, and there were so many possibilities to take this after the original, obviously whoever owned it just wanted to try and make some money by releasing something with the 30 Days of Night name attached to it. There is zero writing. The ending sucked. Not because it was predictable, it just sucked like the entire film. And yes another female character undergoes the Ripley / Sarah Connor transformation.
Does anyone ever have an original thought? To all writers, I'm over it. Pick a new theme for every single sequel. Get a new formula, whatever. It's done - like a Thanksgiving turkey. OK? In short the original blew me away, and this just blew. Hope this saves you some money. Jackie
