This Is the End (2013)
Take Yo Panties Off! (Spoilers)
Wow.
I walked into the movie theater with my friend, expecting just a regular comedy about the end of the world with bad special effects. Boy was I wrong. We both walked out of the theater, laughing, and completely blown away by the execution of the movie. The story is, quite bluntly, Seth Rogen, Jay Bareuchel, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill are all hunkered down in Franco's new mansion while the apocalypse ensues.
The comedy is great, very consistent and no jokes really fall flat. I was worried for this movie, because each time a comedy is released all of the good jokes are ruined in the trailer to lure people in. Not with this one. If you were a fan of Pineapple Express or Superbad, you will probably love this movie just like I did. Not since "Ted" have I genuinely laughed so much while watching a movie at the theater.
Performances are great as well. The idea to just ditch creating new characters and having the actors play themselves made everything twice as funny given the situation, And I have to give credit to Danny McBride for stealing the screen nearly every time he appears, but the interactions supplied by the others really made it perfect. They are not exactly playing themselves, though. They are playing dramatized versions of themselves, for example Michael Cera isn't actually a coke sniffing pervert.
The combination of end of the world/comedy and even some scary/unsettling parts was great and worked for the tone of the movie. For example, there is a scene where a man pokes his head through a hole in the door of James Franco's house, begging the actors to let him in. All of a sudden he is decapitated, and his head, gushing blood and all comes rolling towards the group, they proceed to kick the head around, terrified and screaming. For some of you, you may be reading this saying "Oh that's disgusting, how could you laugh at that?" People sometimes forget there's such a thing as "gross out humor" and it isn't always a poop joke, it's just a man getting decapitated is much more mature gross out humor.
And last, the ending. I will not spoil the ending, but my god...I did not see that ending coming based on the previews. Me and my friend were laughing uncontrollably, while cheering at the screen the whole time. I am glad that I did not spoil myself before seeing the movie, because the payoff was spectacular.
10/10 This is going down as one of my all-time favorite comedies!
The Sitter (2011)
The Same Formula
I'm not going to say this was a terrible movie, because it wasn't. I really wanted to like it, especially when I heard this had the same director as Pineapple Express, I thought it would be just as hilarious.
But to be honest, I didn't really laugh once. I chuckled when the woman said "B'yotch", but other than that, it just didn't make me laugh. When I watch a comedy, I don't always look for a compelling storyline with deep characters, I'm looking for something to laugh about and reminisce about with my friends. It had a very generic idea, which has pretty much been reused, person has to babysit crazy kids, things go awry. Of course, this one includes drugs and violence, but even still, the whole thing was poorly executed. Characters seemed forced, and the main character is said to be some sort of slacker/loser but somehow can figure everyone out.
I just think the movie had potential to be as hilarious as the trailers made it out to be. I would skip this if I were you, there honestly is nothing worth laughing at in this, rent Superbad instead.
The Room (2003)
This film is funny...when it's trying to be serious
Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" centers around a man named Johnny (Tommy Wiseau). Johnny works at a bank, and he is engaged to a beautiful young woman named Lisa (Juliette Danielle). Lisa is unfaithful to Johnny, claiming he is boring. Lisa begins to bed Johnny's best friend, Mark (Greg Sestero). That's all really.
This film defines bad filmakeing, a bad script, bad actors, bad acting, everything. This one isn't exactly on par with Battlefield: Earth, this one is at least enjoyable. It is funny through it's stupidity. When this was first seen, most likely by the critics, laughed at it. Out of embarrassment, Tommy Wiseau claimed it was a Black Comedy. It was marketed as a Black Comedy. That's kind of like making "Inception", and then releasing it as a chick flick. Acting was very paralyzed, Every time there was more than two people in the room, one of them would say "I have to get going". Everyone is always coming in and out of Johnny's apartment, Lisa's mother makes a comment about how "it's like Grand Central Station". People are constantly looking directly at the camera, Kyle Vogt, one of Johnny's friends, does this excessively. Almost all of Johnny's diologue is ad libbed in to the final print, he constantly looks like a fish.
All in all, The Room is a terrible movie. I gave it a two because it is hilarious to watch and make fun of. 2/10
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (2010)
You can tell it's a Snyder film...
Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga'Hoole surprised me. I was expecting a childish movie, but this in fact is for a much more mature audience. Snyder stays in lieu of his previous films with his infamous slow motion effect. The visual effects are absolutely dazzling, it nearly looks real down to the feathers. The story centers around a young owl named Soren (voiced by Jim Sturgess). Soren believes in these "Guardians of Ga'Hoole, which are basically owls who fight against the brainwashed soldiers of St. Aggie's. St. Aggies is an "orphanage" where Soren and his brother Kludd (voiced by Ryan Kwanten)are kidnapped to become workers. While there, he meets Gyflie, a much younger female owl (voiced by Emily Barclay). The owls are "moonblinked" which is basically when someone is brainwashed. Kludd, seeking to be brave, joins St. Aggies and goes under the wing of Nyra (voiced by Helen Mirren). Soren and Gyflie eventually escape, to contact The Guardians to help them fight the owls at St. Aggies.
I thought it was good for the family, certainly, if you are a Snyder fan, then you may enjoy this. I have not read the books, but thoroughly enjoyed the movie. 8/10
