Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie (2010)

Could have been something really great.......

I really wanted this movie to be great. I had been waiting months for this to be released and although my expectations weren't that high i still felt let down by this title. As i watched this i really wanted to get in to it and had read many of the warhammer books in the past so felt I could overlook any failing in the movie as i really wanted it to be good. Unfortunately the animation is so poor that it constantly pulls you back out of the story. Characters look wooden and reminded me of older animated TV series e.g. starship troopers. The special effects, such as explosions and gunfire look terrible. There is only one half decent fight scene but even there the characters move as if they have arthritis and clunk about the place with as much grace as the miniature figurines upon which this movie gets its source material. Again. I wanted this to be good and wish i could give it a higher score but honestly. The cut scenes in many of the games are of much higher quality.

The good: excellent voice acting/casting. good music. Attention to detail of 40k lore. decent story if a little slow.

The bad: Animation is very poor.

I remember seeing the first trailers for this, and like everyone else i thought. Wow! this looks great. I suppose it's hard to argue with the fact that this movie does look quite good and some of the CGI is impressive,however, the story is just so awful that it makes you throw your hands in the air and exclaim; ARE THEY ACTUALLY SERIOUS? This thing is an absolute disaster. Character development is terrible. Plot holes abound. The laws of physics or just common sense are just plain non existent. I enjoy video games so i don't want to make the comparison that this is like watching a video game. It's Not! Video games at least make an effort to develop a plot or make you feel something for the characters. This movie does neither. This appears to be the remnants of several other unfinished disaster movies all mashed together into a giant mess and unleashed upon the public. This is a stinker. Avoid it like the plague!

Clash of the Titans (2010)

I'm gonna include a couple of minor spoilers but nothing major. Ugh.. Where to begin. Me and my 16 year old brother went to this thinking it might be a good swords and sandals epic. About fifteen minutes into the movie we looked at each other and shook our heads in disbelief. Character development is practically non existent. I mean i really didn't care who lived or died. They were all basically cannon fodder. I know this is firmly set in the fantasy/mythology realm but a little artistic license in the wrong hands can be a very dangerous thing. I will give an example that occurs in the first quarter of the movie. While camping in some woods the lead character just goes for a stroll... while out for a walk he happens upon the haft of a sword( while in the cinema we both jokingly mimicked light-sabers, then burst out laughing when the sword basically turned out to be exactly that!). During this same sequence while still just out walking, he meets another demigod who appeared to just happen to be out for a walk too... next he stumbles upon a clearing full of the mythical flying horses, the Pegasus, and i'm not even talking one, this is a full heard. While talking to the demigod lady, his disgruntled stepfather just turns up to cause a bit of a mess and stomp about in a rubber suit.. Thus ensues an epic cgi fest that continues for another hour. Please don't spend money on this movie. The CGI is OK. I mean if CGI still floats your boat then you might like this but its rubbish mindless tripe.
