The Endless (2017)
Will there be a (new) sequel?
If you loved The Resolution (2012), the first part of this loosely connected series, you'll definitely enjoy The Endless. It felt like watching a Twilight Zone episode (or Outer Limits, for those younger out there), as in the beginning it all looks perfectly normal and benevolent, while slowly twisting into a nightmarish chain of events Lovecraft himself would not be ashamed of. The ending is ambiguous and left the room for another adventure in the same setting. It's not a typical horror flick, but will certainly keep you awake at night (if nothing, only to count the moons in the night's sky).
The Invisible Man (2020)
Superb start, a decent ending
Unlike majority of people that took the effort to comment here, I find the ending to be quite fine. It may seem messy to some, but I could hardly come up with a better ending myself (then again, I am not a film director). So, I definitely recommend watching this one and not being burdened by low expectations. The movie delivers in every aspect possible and it's probably in top 10 so far in 2020.
The Rezort (2015)
A ruined idea
This got to be the most generic zombie movie I've seen in my life (and I am a fan of the genre). The premise was fairly good, if not too original. Unfortunately, soon the whole movie was ruined by bad acting, shallow plot and awfully dull action. The zombies are sometimes fast, sometimes slow, occasionally smart, yet mostly brainless pack... It's all one greasy, dull and utterly uninventive piece of meat (pun intended) of a movie.
It's a B - movie, but still.
Eli (2019)
Starts well, ends up in a huge mess
This film had a promising start, I'll give that to it. Got kind of a spooky atmosphere, some scenes were truly frightening and it felt like the plot would turn some unexpected way... It did, but for the worse.
I've seen many plot - twists throughout the movies, but never once so pointless like this one. It is literally built on NOTHING, based completely off the previous story, dialogue, characters or plot. It looks like as if director and the guys around suddenly come up with another idea for a movie, but didn't want to get rid of the previous material. Well done boys, you saved more of the film tape for the future generations.
It Follows (2014)
Less of a horror, but scary nevertheless
I don't know what some of the reviewers below watched, but it's certainly not this film. The story is great, smart and compelling. I caught myself thinking what I would do in place of the characters and where would I go to escape the fate. You can identify with what happens on the screen and it's a rare quality these days in the film industry.
It's not entirely bright and got some flaws, but at least tries not to recycle the old washed - up horror cliches and brings some fresh air to the dying (no pun intended) genre.
Aterrados (2017)
Big, but could've been bigger
This film scared me to the bone and eventually just let me thirsty for an explanation. Horrors (and movies in general) are supposed to have a solid and rather plausible plot to get the "suspension of disbelief" working.
Unfortunately, this one's horror for the sake of the horror. Well, let's say that's not too tragic cause it is way more than usual jump - scare Hollywood produces lately, but could have been so much more.
Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010)
Either art or crap
I have seen this movie twice in a span of three years... and I've grown very much fond of it. Don't want to be a hipster, but I suppose it requires two or three viewings (and an appropriate age) to fit all the nuances and subtleties of this movie.
It's definitely a strange kind of artistic form. Still, remembering the scenery, music and costumes, to the characters and notions scattered all over the plot, this is one hell of a movie.
Would You Rather (2012)
Just pointless
This movie leads to nothing. The plot is non - existent, unless you are into obscure private parties including eye - digging, barrel - drowning and similar lovely stuff.
At the end the whole movie just makes no sense. As if the director did some filming until his hand started to ache and just decided to cut the crap.
Citadel (2012)
A way above average
I have a friend who's got a mild degree of agoraphobia and this movie, apart from being a decent horror flick, reminds me of him and kinda raises the question of people with that kind of disability.
The portrayal of a guy who goes over his fears & conditions to save his child from the hands of a pack of violent children is harsh and powerful and the director, IMHO, made it quite possible to identify with the main actor. The plot is smart, not easily predictable and the effects are okayish, given the budget.
A hidden gem worth watching.
Black Christmas (2019)
Haven't paid for a movie, but want my money back
I just hope my girlfriend liked this. They say people do horrible things for love... and I am the proof.
Freaks (2018)
How a super - hero movie should look like
'Freaks' is a proof that you don't need Marvel - size special effects or billions of dollars to make a superb movie. I consider myself a hardned sci - fi fan and yet this film kept me on the edge of my seat to the last minute. The ending is a bit of a let down, but it doesn't spoil the overall great movie.
I just hope in didn't flop in the cinemas (haven't checked the Wiki), cause it really deserves an attention. And a sequel, why not?
Marauders (2016)
I've seen worse
This movie is so messed up and incoherent that I could barely sit through the end. It's like a music video for a Kanye West song in all the glory and splendour, yet completely shallow in the inside.
The single bright side is Christopher Melloni, which proves himself (once again) as a solid actor and a good choice to carry a leading character in an action movie. Everyone else is below mediocre, including Bruce Willis (who probably had to be physically coerced to take part in this).
Countdown (2019)
Got more than hoped for
Looked like another supernatural flick for teen audience, but actually went further than that. The movie delivers in certain horror aspects, the directing is solid and the main actors did a fine job.
On the other side, the story is the weakest point, with cheap cliches and bunch of recycled motives all over the place. The way the plot develops is laughable at moments. Honestly, is there any supernatural horror with no priest in it who reveals the mystery just out of nothing?
All in all, a decent movie for a dull winter night, but let the high hopes to rest.
The Ascent (2011)
A lot better than one would expect
I've heard of this movie for the first time during my stay in Serbia. They were screening it at some apparently renowned international film festival taking place there and I checked the website in intention to find more info on that, ending up with finding this hidden game on the presentation list. Must admit that I was sceptical at the beginning, but decided to hop into the unknown and watch it tonight at the local cinema in the Montenegrin capital.
The Ascent is the story of a young writer who escapes the bustling city in order to find mind refuge and inspiration at the mountain hut owned by the strange and reclusive family of field workers, far in the isolated and barely reachable mountain place in northern Montenegro. However, staying there and getting deeply into the family affairs of those strange folks leads him to facing more than he bargained for.
Although it comes from the country that hasn't established itself as a film - making paradise, which it owes much to the presence of the bigger (and more financially potent) former Yugoslav states in the neighbourhood, the Ascent is a surprisingly good movie. Surely it suffers from the typical mystery/horror flaws such as borrowing some motives from the Hollywood production, including the extensive and unnecessary usage of blood. Nevertheless, it features a balloon of refreshing air in imaginative storyline, high quality production and a decent acting delivered by the performers who are probably unknown to anyone outside of the Balkans area (along with the guy playing the role of Zeko who looks like a James Cosmo's twin brother). Mix it with the breathtaking mountain scenery of that God forsaken hills and mountains and you get a movie worth spending 1.5 hours with. My recommendations for this one!
