Tyrannosaur (2011)
Don't expect any Dinosaurs
Paddy Considine is one of my favorite British actors. Several great movies, like "In America" and "Dead Mans Shoes", have shown his great talent. Get ready for his full-length directing debut. Tyrannosaur tells a dark and depressing story about a man plagued by violence and hate. Every little thing can make him explode and he won't hold back. This is a heavy movie. If you're in a bad mood or you've just been dumped or anything like that, don't watch it, cause you'll get even more depressed. Also, if you love dogs, you might just skip this one. If you like dark, heavy dramas, you'll find a true gem with this one. I really loved the grim atmosphere in this movie, the very convincing acting and the way everything is filmed. Paddy Considine should definitely keep both acting (he's not in this movie though) and directing cause this man is a true genius. When the ending credits rolled I just sat there staring at the screen with a sad look on my face for a couple of minutes. Which in this case is a good thing cause that's probably exactly what Considine wants. This is a movie I will not easily forget about
The Devil's Rejects (2005)
Hellbilly Deluxe
Robert Cummings, better known as Rob Zombie, isn't exactly a very good director. If you've seen "House of 1000 corpses" you've probably realized that this movie is extremely chaotically written and directed. There's no straight line or anything like that to be found in the movie. To be clear, this isn't exactly always a bad thing. But for some reason, in House of 1000 corpses it just didn't work for me. In it's sequel, "The Devil's Rejects", you'll find something which feels way more like a movie that's actually finished. Rob Zombie has a twisted mind. I'm a fan of the guy's music so that made me wondering what kind of movies he would make. Well, kind of exactly what I expected. Pretty sick and twisted. Good. I love the cast in the first place, including his beautiful wife Cherri-moon Zombie, who practically plays in all his movies. You'll follow a psychotic, sick minded family on a road rampage, actually it's nothing more than that. Which is fine in this case. It's everything this movie needs. It starts off with some cops and a sheriff surrounding the house where the family is in which ends up in a massive shoot-out. From there on it's nothing more than a bloody and sick road trip. Don't expect a deep story line or outstanding dialogues. You will not enjoy this movie if you do that. If you expect a pretty mindless, blood packed roller-coaster ride with even some family drama, you'll probably love it. There even is a chance that, like me, you'll actually somehow gonna feel sorry for one of the most psychotic families in movie history. Hell yeah, Rob Zombie!
[Rec]³: Génesis (2012)
Genesis minus REC
I'm not gonna slaughter this movie nor I'll advice against watching it but you gotta know that this isn't anything like the first 2 RECs. It's more like a parody. A gory darkly humorous slasher movie with a couple of links with the previous REC movies. To be clear I do like gory movies. I like blood. Bodies being chainsawed in half and brains being splattered over walls. But I was expecting a movie like REC & REC2. It started off pretty interesting. It somehow felt relieving being out of that dusty apartment. Cheering people celebrating at a wedding party. Chaotically filmed with a handy-cam again. You'll love it or you'll hate. I love it. But what I hated was the fact that after about 15 minutes the handy-cam was put down. Right at the moment I got ready for the expected roller-coaster ride. Bam. Bye REC. To me the strength and charm of the previous REC movies was the realism. To me the effect is being destroyed by turning it into a "regular" movie. If only the movie would have had a totally different title and had nothing to do with the previous movies i'd probably like it. But as a REC movie I think it kinda sucks. I didn't mind watching it and I did have a laugh so now and then, but those moments where overwhelmed by opposite reactions.
[Rec]² (2009)
3...2...1...action & action & action.......
I don't exactly know what it is with Spain and horror but I do know that somehow they're just simply amazing in setting up a great atmosphere and are actually able to scare you so now and then. I loved the first REC, I really did. But there were just two things about it which irritated me a little. The main character, reporter Angela Vidal and the pace, which was quite slow for a short movie. Still I think it is one of the best zombie movies ever made. REC2, by the way, I find ever better. You'll be on the edge of your seat the whole movie. Besides some religious babbling so now and than the movie keeps going in a great tempo. Great scares. Amazing make-up. Solid and realistic acting and even a small twist. This movie takes just a little longer than 80 minutes but it's packed with everything you want from a, to me classic, zombie movie. It's not entirely necessary to check out part one first, but I DO recommend it. Just watch 'em both in one view (forget about part 3GENESIS tough) Spain is a Roman Catholic country so there will be some religious issues involved. I'm not a religious person and it didn't really bother me in this movie so it's not a reason to wine about that because it simply won't harm the movie. REC2 is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. If you like horror movies then this is a gem. If you like zombie movie in particular this movie is gold
Deadly Premonition (2010)
Awfully good. Beautiful in it's gruesomeness.
This is one of, if not the, weirdest, most bizarre game I've ever played. It's awful yet amazing, ugly yet beautiful, boring yet very interesting. The controls are horrendous, the graphics are bad, and the sound effects are the worst you'll ever hear! How can a game which does so much wrong and feels and looks so amateurish get so many great reviews. Easy enough. If you'll be able to look through the graphics and mechanics 'n everything, you'll find a pearl of a game. Something so atmospheric and beautiful in it's gruesomeness it'll stay with you for probably quite a while. The characters are quite intriguing and the voice-acting isn't bad at all. At some points the game is slow. Especially when driving around town from point A to B. Just sit tight, give it time and try to enjoy everything the story has to offer. It's not a hard game also but the story is interesting enough to keep you wondering. It'll take you about 20 hours to beat the main story line and besides that there are plenty of side quests and other mysteries to solve. If you're able to have some patience and look through the sloppy graphics and repetitive sound effects you'll experience an great and unique game. I agree that if this would've came out ten years ago, it would've been respected a lot more. Just give it a chance. If not, don't give it a 1 or judge it by just its looks.
Ted (2012)
It won't waste your time
To me Ted is one of the best examples of a typical Hollywood comedy. I think most people got to see it because it's Seth McFarlane who made it. So it's not weird to expect something as funny as Family Guy. Well, i just couldn't laugh my pants off. I DID enjoy the movie but that's just because it's somehow entertaining. Same as The Hangover, Paul and Due Date, I think this movie is just, okay. Just as lame and predictable as most of this kind, but yet, it's enjoyable. And actually there wasn't any moment where I expected it to be more than just enjoyable. Definitely not as funny as Family Guy (most of the time) is, but way less awful than the unnecessary spin-off "The Cleveland Show". If you're chilling with some friends, drinking a cold beer of whatever, go watch it. You'll probably laugh a couple of times. But you're wasting your time if you're expecting a strong and original comedy.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Superstition at its best
Wow, what a weekend of movies I had! Watching Intouchables, Seven Psychopaths and SLP in a row really made my Sunday. Pretty late that night I watched SLP. I almost decided not to... Was it the right moment? Ain't I too tired? Was it my kind of movie at all? Yes it was. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence really show great performances and proof how talented they are. The story is quite original yet not unpredictable. The movie includes laughs, drama and some great dialogues. Also it's nice to see good 'ol Robert de Niro back in decent action as a superstitious football fanatic! This movie isn't for everyone but if you're into movies like Garden State or Midnight in Paris, i'm sure you'll spend a good 2 hours with this one.
Hotel Transylvania (2012)
Worth spending the night in
Every once in a while i'm in the mood for some animated fun. You don't have to expect a lot from most animation movies but a lot of 'em are solid fun. So is Hotel Transylvania. Kids like monsters. Especially overactive ones. That's exactly what this movie is. An overactive stay in a hotel for monsters. No humans allowed! The story is simple and predictable. Also the all-star cast isn't necessary. Mostly because the strength isn't the voice acting. It's the animations, the fun and kinda dumb characters and the tempo which makes the movie fun to watch. You won't get bored nor surprised by this movie. But whether you're 51 or 8, you'll definitely have a good laugh.
Lake Mungo (2008)
Another surprise from down under.
Me roaming around on internet in search for less known and low budget horror/thriller movies occasionally brings me both surprisingly bad & good titles. After seeing "The Tunnel" a little while ago, which surprised me quite a lot, I was getting pretty interested in "Lake Mungo". I've had this title on my computer for quite a while already but sort of overlooked it a couple of times. I'm not sure yet if Aussies have some kind of a different view on horror movies than most others in Europe and the U.S., because same as with "The Tunnel" the atmosphere in "Lake Mungo" felt kinda different from almost any other horror movie i've seen. It's not that both of those movies are so much alike, but something did feel sort of familiar. Anyway, "Lake Mungo" really surprised me. I had totally no expectations of this title. Only that it's yet another, so called, Mockumentary. I really love this style of movie-making but off course it keeps getting harder and harder to stay original and keep surprising the audience. Which "Lake Mungo" did. The movie isn't very original but it had some unexpected twists which made me laugh a bit. Not a, "wow thats funny laugh", but a sort of, "haha, wow thats pretty cool, giggle". 16-yo Alice is found drowned in a local dam after a picnic with her parents and brother. After her body is found and her father identified the body, images of her starting to appear in photos and tapings. A psychic is contacted and a VCR is placed in Alice's room. This creates the, tho small, "Paranormal Activity" part of the movie. From the point it turns out some recordings aren't exactly what they seem, a couple of interesting twists join in. Alice had secrets. Without these twists the movie would've definitely be way less interesting. Even boring I think. Alice's secrets made this movie pretty good. Some will find these twists unnecessary or lame, but for me it totally worked. It's not a very disturbing movie. It's more about grief than ghosts. But it's still a nice little ghost story with some scenes which 'll definitely stay with me for some days.-- 7,5/10
Silent Hill (2006)
Not bad at all!
As both a horror and video game fan I was at first quite sceptical about this title. But unlike the, to me, quite close to disastrous, Resident Evil remakes (although I haven't seen RE: Afterlife yet) I was pretty much surprised about Silent Hill. The atmosphere in the games is amazing. Maybe even the best part of the franchise. Which they converted into the movie pretty well. The acting isn't bad at all either. Jodelle Ferland who seems really talented to me (based on her roles in Kingdom Hospital & Tideland) again is pretty steady in this movie although her role is quite small this time. Same as Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean act pretty decent. You can easily imagine the fear Mitchell (Playing the main person) is experiencing during her forced visit to lovely Silent Hill. Like most nowaday horror movies this one isn't outstanding either but it definitely will not waste your time.
