Despicable Me 2 (2013)
Average
I don't understand how this is 7.8. I am a fair reviewer and this is at most a 6 by IMDb standards.
It is well rendered, and there are some innovative parts, the characters which were excellently formed in the first one have now no consistency, the subplots clumsily come together, and no matter how many reviewers say this has adult and child appeal, it really is aimed at very young children.
if I was to compare it in standard, you are looking at a Ice Age/Madagascar standard instead of the Kung Fu Panda/Toy Story 3 level.
Worth a watch but 7.8 sounds a bit fishy to me
Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger! (2012)
This is awful
Oh Dear.
I've watched loads of films with my daughter (who is now 10), I am a bit of a film buff, so hope I can give a bit of guidance on this to other parents.
This film is xmassy, but only because it is crucifying in the biblical sense.
If you have kids under 6, i'm sure they will enjoy it, only because they will enjoy seeing wootton providing some kids entertainer type laughs, other kids dancing and singing and some xmas backgrounds, but whereas kids films normally have an adult undercurrent to keep the parents happy, this is a film for kids apparently written by kids.
There really is a sense of everything being made up on the spot, with no logic or reason to the film.
As parents you know how painful it can be watching your kids Christmas shows at schools only for the sheer joy of 5 minutes to see your child doing something, well imagine watching the last hour of this film seeing just that without having your kid in it.
I saw the first one, which wasn't too bad, but you have to give this a wide berth, to tell directors they have to do better than this mediocrity.
(never given a film a 1 before - although the happening came pretty close)
The Raven (2012)
Critics and Viewers will like it
Yup, this is a pretty good film out of the dearth of films available lately...classic storytelling...good pace, dialogue was good, and I normally get 'who done it' films straight away, but it took me a while.
The screenplay was excellent throughout except for a slight let down on the forest scenes where wide angle would have looked more professional, than the close up shots, but I really am splitting hairs.
I like John Cusack as a relatively lightweight actor, but this is a heavyweight role and he pulls it off......
Not sure about the modern Marvel style credits, but there again some people will like the modern twist it puts on a period drama. The ending was enjoyable but a little muddy to resolve...
I wish I had caught this in the cinema.
Marmaduke (2010)
Ignore the poor reviews
This is an enjoyable film for adults and children.
The storyline is standard format, the characters are enjoyable and the film moves at a nice pace.
Some of the CGI gets a bit clumsy at certain times, and some of the support characters could have been more likable, but i'm just being a bit picky, the lead characters are flawless.
I am surprised by the poor reviews on IMDb, which I normally use to decide whether I am going to watch a film.
Its no 'Kung Fu Panda' 'Barnyard' or 'Toy Story 3' but it doesn't deserve the poor reviews i've seen.
