Yang guang di yu: Ren rou shi chang (1995)
More late night Cinemax than HK cat iii
This movie concerns a couple from HK who go on their honeymoon to San Francisco. There are gangsters in the midst of some porn turf battle, the wife ends up getting kidnapped, the film then becomes a vehicle for soft core lesbian sex that has nothing to do with the plot really, lots of soft core lesbian sex featuring the same two girls in the same limo, oh were the gangsters are ostensibly shooting a porno.
Stuff happens, husband investigates by running around everywhere with her picture. Then more of the same boring cinemax style soft core lesbian sex. Seriously like half an hour of it, now for the record its pretty hard to annoy me with excessive sapphic love .. but this movie did.
There are many many many better CAT III's out there.
Love Object (2003)
very good black comedy
*may contain minor spoilers* I really enjoyed this movie, It is definitely more of a black comedy than a horror or thriller movie. Quite a few scenes had me laughing quietly to myself (which i usually am not prone to) One of my favorite segments was how he apologized and made excuses to Nikki that night he comes home late. Other have commented that they didn't like the ending but It was not what I expected, in that it was not a fourmulamatic ending, so I felt that this added to the film as well. I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys dark humor, or just well-made independent films, totally outside the Hollywood mainstream.
Corpses Are Forever (2004)
for what its worth...
I enjoyed this movie. No its not a great movie, but i felt it was well done camp. You cant take the movie itself seriously, but the movie plays off this, it isn't meant to be serious, scary or believable. This movie doesn't have pretensions, and i found it much more entertaining than say, club dread... (which was given a theatrical release.) i thought it was enjoyable, and very wisely had a runtime of 120 mins. And the devil looks very much like marlon brando, I'm surprised no one else has commented on this. I felt the storyline was very original, a nice change of pace from all the "teenagers visiting woods/secluded rural community" genre films (cabin fever excepted). If you want a little over an hour of mindless entertainment, and are willing to exercise suspension of disbelief, maybe check it out..... Or at least if you are contemplating renting club dread check this out instead..
Session 9 (2001)
Boring begins to sum it up...
To the previous reviewer who compared this film to a Nine Inch Nails video stretched to an hour and a half, if you've ever seen the NIN video for 'happiness in slavery' that, even stretched to an hour would kick this films a**! If they had brought in Trent Reznor as a creative consultant I'm sure it may have actually been somewhat disturbing and interesting.
Anyone who thought that Blair Witch Project was just too intense and scary (LOL) will most likely find this movie to be their cup of tea. It is boring, there is no payoff, for the fist hour I kept thinking there has to be a point if i keep watching another 10 mins something HAS to happen. I was wrong. I found the attempts at building atmosphere novice. And atmosphere alone does not a good film make. I don't understand the films high rating on IMDb. Any episode of the T.v. show 'Millenium' blows away this entire movie (this is directed at all the reviews praising the psychological aspects of this film)
In summary I found it boring, Not in the least scary, a crude practice in building atmosphere that leads NOWHERE.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Not your typical Hollywood take on love
First off I really liked this movie (and yes I must admit that I was a previous kaufman fan). I felt that the most powerful aspect of this movie and the meaning that I took away from it was that love doesn't have to be 'perfect' to be worthwhile. Too many, if not all, times Hollywood will present movies with a romantic angle that are cookie-cutter perfect. Its always this perfect guy meets some perfect girl they have this perfect romance with some trite easily-overcome problems within. I loved the fact that the characters in this movie argued, and over stupid things, so much like real life. For me the fact that they argued made the love more real, the movie shows that love has good and bad sides that one must expect. If you expect your love life to be like a generic "romantic comedy" you will find yourself eternally let-down. One of Kate Winslet's early lines in the move cracked me up, when Carey's character calls her nice and she says shes "a vindictive b***h"
I thought Jim Carey did a great job in staying away from 99% of his usual facial mannerisms and I really bought his character. I also really bought the chemistry between the two leads. I think Clementine embodies many characteristics that Carey's char (I forgot his name) wishes that he had the courage to be. I think the reason he was attracted to Clemintine was that she has the ability to do exciting, spontaneous things that he could never do without her. And in doing so he feels liberated to an extent, but also resents her freedom from social constraints to a degree.
I also really enjoyed the way the filmmakers superbly captured the surreal sequences of the film, I dint find it boring, there were interludes but I had such a vested interest in the film at that point that I was along for the ride. The ending did seem like they had to search for a way to tie it together ,(in terms of the whole dunst romance angle) but really can anyone out there come up with a better ending? In closing there is no such thing as a 100% original film, just because all of the subject matter is not 100% original does not mean that the film cannot give a completely different take and angle on an old idea. I would be willing to bet that the works of phillip k dick influenced this film greatly. And this is one of the few romances on film that I have enjoyed greatly.
