The bizarre private life of gay yuppies
15 December 2023
This love story of two gay inner-city yuppies, one of them played by Chris New, who can't shut up about how persecuted they are as gay men; and also exhibits the tendency to love the sound of his own voice a bit too much - basically a feisty drama queen with radical ideas about how gay men should live "out loud" and show the world that they are gay, and the other played by Tom Cullen who is the opposite in many ways. For me this was nothing new, so little creativity it could have been a boring documentary but no instead let's make another pretentious 'gay indie' film for gay hipsters to enjoy.

Intense Rotten Human nature
9 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
To put into context Bresson's manner where he has utilized the power of understatement, using intentionally unemotional and stripped down acting to create a vision where all the flaws of human nature, the tragedy and comedy of the most basic and random of human behaviors, become accentuated and the viewer's consciousness becomes open, soft, vulnerable to the sharp blade of these suggestions. All the subtleties of the mental and emotional experience are subdued and then unleashed at certain times to cut like a razor for example the part where Elle looks in the mirror before killing herself and gives a slight grin evoking a sense of something rotten. The film investigates themes of power play between man and wife, possession, death, resentment and jealousy. Elle clearly doesn't want to be possessed, as indicated by her initial avoidance of Luc and her last statement to him which is a pre-trigger to killing herself ("i will be faithful only to you" etc) and perhaps the monkey in a cage at the zoo is a metaphor for this. "Millions of women wish to be married" ... "But there are also monkeys".... Bresson's movies like this are highly recommended for their style and originality.

dangers of syphilis? or just a stupid woman.
22 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Two faced histrionic bawdy little witch goes around whoring herself and stealing her parents' money and poisoning them with all the fickleness of a flighty erratic, compulsively lying and unpredictable woman. She is from a poor family, yet carries on like a self-indulgent modern-day hipster. I really found parts of this movie entertaining and since i never read the book i can only guess but she seems like a very hateable conniving little so and so. Unfortunately she doesn't get what she deserves. I am not sure if this is a true story but I personally would prefer to have seen her decapitated..

Better than Schindler's List
2 April 2021
This is a really well made and honest movie, not some spielberg rubbish to deliberately create guilt by as part of the greater cash cow for a bunch of religeous and racial exceptionalists.

The City Girl (1984)

Rarest
2 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Once upon a time i had it on VHS, obtained in some obscure op shop in a hidden pocket of town.

My ex and i watched this movie on the evening before the day we broke up, and - as i recall - synchronistically one of the themes of the movie is breakups; the process of understanding incompatibility; of realizing a relationship is not working.

Though my ex and i broke up amicably there was a sense at the time that I was the one being dumped, and I was angry for a while. The painful resonance this movie had for me; simply it reminded me of the emotional mess i was left in after a breakup. So, along with many other videos i had at the time, i took them all to an op shop as part of my process of 'cleansing' my life and trying to move on.

But of all the films that have come into my possession, this is the one that sticks with me the most, a film of 'Anne' weaving her way through Toronto city, the 80's vibe, big hair, coke, they even use analog drum machines in the soundtrack.

Poignant story line not afraid to deal with themes that are very real, drugs, confusion over our identity, desire, violence and rape. and BREAKUPS. Good screenplay, interesting story, balanced with a creative cinematography its just sad that everywhere i look i can't find this movie. Please help me find it! -michael

Purgatory (1988)
10/10
Absolute B-grade Gold
16 October 2010
Starting off this *is* the writing of an oft-favoured 1980's B-grade fan, so I am in no way writing this to compete with previous reviewers or take some imagined review 'injustice' into my own hands.

I appreciate the plot line as a particularly classic one and with its means to expand on whatever drama or storyline unfolds the end result is what you get. Its the whole 'put in an overseas jail' thing. Yes, 'purgatory'. So my comments are really relative to people who like me who enjoy a little cheesiness. No you wouldn't see Meryl Streep in a movie like this one and thats what gives its character.

Take bits and pieces from the movie. For me they are dazzling scenes occurring by the minute. No matter what they say it all seems to wind up funny to me. No matter what the musical soundtrack is, it always manages to impress vintage cheese upon me. I am about to write up some quotes so check them out. Thy might give you an idea of what you're in for.

Yes. The 80's were this bad. Awesome

Shrooms (2007)
10/10
A great freak out and a laugh
17 July 2010
This movie is just a total gas. Okay so you rented the DVD or something with your friends or sat down together to watch your newly downloaded torrent. Perhaps you were hoping for real genius 'scare' the likes of freddy krueger. But this movie, 'shrooms' is in a class all its own.

For me the entertainment is simply in the screaming and overly melodramatic and esoteric fluff of the entire plot. Its such a 'novelty' movie and quite a gem for me because it was not released in my own country and at the time I saw it for the first time I had an interest in magic mushrooms.

Anyway, aside from that, its magic for me is in moments such as when alice and maya are having a typical bitch-fight and they tumble down a slope and discover Bluto's blood-covered corpse and they start screaming hysterically. Genius. The movie is full of these power-packed kitsch-moments and acting like this; my favourite type of horror movie. Is the girl going to scream, cry, or pull out the tic-tacs from her handbag?

Or when, after we witness Alice's encounter with the strange men, we se Maya and Lindsey gasping with feigned relief as they are reuinted. Such a funny funny movie. So unrealistic in some respects and so overly acted and funny.

We have the typical nafs and the jock who goes missing. We have the typical cheerleaders with their periods. We have the typical nu-school roots and blues scene yuppies with their Indian-weave hessian bags and beanies. And they parttake in the 'coolest' drug recreations.

And then it goes horribly wrong! Is there not a more exciting, far-fetched, intense and extreme idea for a movie!? Pearse Elliot, you're a genius! Thank-You for this movie! I don't care if it seems to try hard to be like 'the Ring' meets 'children of the corn'. I love just watching this movie for its immense crap-stirring entertainment value/. 10 stars!

Every time it just gives me so much enjoyment.
13 April 2010
I have to classify this as one of the more enjoyable movies I have watched. But thats just me.

And I love a good interesting 80's thriller.

My opinion stems from my experience of the film being immersed in a plot that is simmering and yet not too hot, just relaxed enough to make the pace of the movie good to watch on one of those days where you can't be bothered what the hell your watching! And also another interest of mine is that of the main subject; art (esp 'modern' art). These factors made it quite enjoyable overall for me and I would recommend it for viewing if you feel you may be similarly inclined.

The movie starts off in the thick of one of Louise's action/suspense- packed gallery-raids (for a modern painting that her husband Terry, played by Craig Berko - who is also in on, and perhaps the most part of, the malevolent force behind the raids - calls 'talentless').

From this outset, you kind of begin to touch on the shadow of a doubt that here is a very judgemental and angry man.

Louise, played brilliantly by Debra Sandlund, although engaged in despicable acts of robbery, comes across as lithe and intelligent and caring.

As the movie progresses we begin to understand that the pressure that Louise's husband puts on her to steal more, and do more, is undue and the audience receives that verification often into the film.

Peter Hawley made everything about this movie awesome for me; the music, the plot, the acting and the biting use of swearing ("We don't have to do a f**king thing Terry!")

As a character, I saw Louise progress from a naivete into a woman who is mature enough to seem actually repentant for her mistakes, then take responsibility for having become involved with a disturbed man who shows the ultimate disrespect and contempt for other people's art.

Louise undertakes a gradual transformation, and eventual emancipation from Terry's sway which I found a very important aspect of what made this movie so watchable.

In the end, she basically just walks out on him; and he deserves it. And as an audience, I indulged that gratification! Although, I couldn't help feeling sorry for him; he is so obviously feeling afraid.

Everything about this movie just soars for me. The effort of the individual players, invested into their acting just transcribes dramatically into the feature.

In the beginning I was afraid that it seemed to be turning into something tacky but how wrong I was! Regardless of me being a late 80's child, it is the production value mixed with the story that makes this movie a rare gem from a lesser known period.

I have only watched it a few times but every time it just gives me so much enjoyment.

Silk 2 (1989)
10/10
Genius flashes past your very eyes
29 March 2010
In my eyes, silk 2 provided an outstandingly fun watch. I was thoroughly absorbed in the plot from start to finish. Set in Hawaii, Silk is the policewoman who singlehandedly takes on a ring of criminals cashing in via art-insurance/black-market scandal.

The illustrious criminal 'Mr Gish,' whose smooth talking antics are played to a tee by Jan Merlin, gets me every time.

But he doesn't stand a chance. Out to get him is Jenny 'Silk' Sleighton, a cop who has had more than her dose of tough times recently (and not without the aid of her compatriots the beautiful Holly and handsome Tony) who stand up and fight for whats right in this underworld of lies and fraudulent art-bandits.

All I needed, in order to know that I was going to enjoy this movie, was to see silk in the very beginning, determined to save a group of innocent people from terrorists holding them under siege.

Why? because (in Silk's words): 'crime doesn't pay'!

With grit determination we see Silk make a run for it past the baddies, smash the window and basically go in and shoot them all.

That is why I found this movie so absorbing and great to watch from the very outset.

She was like watching an elastic cat doing gymnastics and shooting all the baddies; Silk is a legend!

But when her partner can no longer follow the case of an old 'pal' (as a favor) any longer, silk takes over and it is non-stop actions-ville. We see explosions, car chases, and humor as well (the fun tourists - "Whats green and swims around in water"?) But most importantly, there is a meaningful plot; someone is stealing real artworks and destroying them for the insurance/black-market value and then lying to the public about the fraudulent copies. I was positively glued to my seat! Tony as a man with the courage to 'speak up' is introduced to Silk in a way where they can both join forces and get to the bottom of things.

So, if you like a movie that's worth a few laughs, hasn't an over-emphasis on realistically conveyed editing and with dialogue and stunts that leave you laughing until your shoelaces untie themselves, this is for you! Sit down with a bowl of popcorn or whatever you like and watch genius flash by your very eyes.

Winners: The Big Wish (1990)
Season 2, Episode 4

Brilliantly crafted children's fantasy (with a moral!)
3 March 2010
Hilarious.

This starts out as an expertly crafted children's fantasy/fairy-tale style show. With a meaningful good vs. evil plot (McEvil vs the King and Queen of The Enchanted Realm). McEvil is actually the royal adviser and begins a double-cross within the kingdom (scapegoating the goblin affectionately titled 'gobbo').

Prince Wilton travels to Earth via 'vortex', to dispose of seven wishes which, if not granted by sundown, will result upon the faeries losing their magic forever. Thereupon he meets Walter Pratt who is attending his first day at a new school.

Cameron Nugent delivers the superior funny and cheesed-up Walter, with extraordinary pizazz. As an 'ordinary' teen, Walter embarks on a very strange day indeed, filled with several very different scenarios each blessed with poignant and delirious comedy.

Each wish granted to him by his 'mate' Prince Wilton, accumulates over the course of the movie, to provide us with a moral "Be content just to be who you are".

Albeit if the scenarios seem far-fetched, its main design / demographic is the teenage contingency (ie 'troublesome years') and with all the T.V young people watch (and for a children's 'short' produced in 1990) for these reasons it is my opinion that the production value soars!

I can't say all of my favourite bits because it would take too long.

Esben Storm (director), Steve J. Spears (Writer) Antonio Barnard and others, Bravo!

Immensely human, yet relaxing and entertaining,
20 February 2010
This movie offers extremely poignant perspectives on the human condition.

We follow the prostitute (played by Wendy Highes), as she works to supply drugs to her brother (very codependent relationship).

Within the self-sacrificing martyr's life that she has chosen (mostly, it appears, as a heroic loyalty for her family) we sympathize with her position because of the way the movie is portrayed.

We are shown the fear of letting her brother go, that she endures.

Enough of that though. The movie is hilarious. The beginning scene in a parlor-car carriage of a train at night, features dialogue between two fascinating characters in almost Quentin Tarantino'esqe pulp.

Upon first watch of this movie, the shades of moderate pathological narcissism (of the woman whoring herself) are unidentifiable in this scene.

Then as the movie gradually moves, we begin to see her ploys adapted to manipulate men. Whats more, the movie progresses in such a way so that because we are being gradually introduced more and more into her daily reality (caring for her brother, teaching, etc); the culmination of her expressing her opinion (that she is actually providing male clients with a worthwhile and much- needed service) never seems audacious.

I am not sure whether the intentions of the producers were to portray this girl in such a light, but her sociopathic rationale never seems sociopathic because of it. Indeed we see that it would take someone with her problems to behave in that way.

From the moments of communion in church; being binded from a long-term emotionally supportive romantic partner (as opposed to just sex); the effort she puts into 'rescuing' her emotionally and physically crippled brother; being a beautiful woman - more often-than-not in the sack with wrinkly, sweaty, drunken and sometimes obnoxious old men - who gets abandoned and used by one of if not the only 'handsome' man in the movie.

Not only is this a very human movie, but it is done in a way that people young and old can absorb and understand it's symbolic eulogies of human doings and happenings (maybe this is due to Peter Sullivan's exquisitely mellow soundtrack that relaxes the deep substance a little).

As an added bonus it is extremely entertaining.

I recommend that this movie needs to be watched many times over a lengthy period, to truly absorb its humanity, its message, it's genius.

Sunset Beat: One Down, Four Up (1990)
Season 1, Episode 1
10/10
Unrealistically smooth thus corny - extremely entertaining!
26 January 2010
The movie begins as something of a mystery where a large sum of money in a crashed vehicle is found by cool clooney (with long hair and the 'choose life' still-bad-ass-but-fully-recovered now undercover cop).

A large contingency of the bad dudes laundered cash-stash has gone over the cliff side near the beach (bloody mulholland) and to cut a long story short, the movie is about said bad guy putting up a considerable struggle to gain the now-nursed-by-clooney/cops booty (thug-money).

This movie is unique (and also funny) because it hosts an entourage of male actors doing it macho-male in try-hard drama style - *whilst at the same time portraying them as these uber-cool-and-cleaned-up- undercover-cop-bikers.

Having said that, there were solemn and hard-hitting moments centered around the despair and reality of drug addiction (with what the addict is trying to avoid dealing with etc.) There seems to be some focus on rebellious teenagers acting out with dangerous behavior and these cool wise-guy cops are there to the rescue.

You just can't beat a 'jock-messiah-of-hope'.

This movie also has some excellent action, stunt scenes, as well as guitar-playing and humor.

Clooney is the ex-rebel setting emotional boundaries on the table for his 'off-the-rails' old-flame and putting his hand into the pit for her (as a still-junkie ex-girlfriend - how absolutely thrillingly romantic!)

On reflection, I wonder if the whole idea of the producers was that Clooney's tough-rebel image was only supposed to be his disguise as an undercover police officer, but it is not.

He is represented as the real-made authentic ex-rebel now-benevolent biker-dude, and the point to which they went to portray this smoothness is just hilarious and makes for entertaining viewing.

Its a very cool movie you just need to know how to look at it in order for it to be entertaining.

Whodunit? (1986 Video)

Great Fun
14 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Opinions differ greatly when it comes to most things, however my decision to give his movie a whopping ten stars is mainly due to the nostalgic feeling the music evokes in me. I was an 80s child and it takes me back. The humor is smooth ("Do you plan on 'cuddling' Wolf into submission?") etc and I really think the portrayal of Stanley is a crackup, (as well as the 'crazy broad').

I like the stars and the over all feeling of the movie is fun (despite being a 'cheap thrill' drowned in horror FX).

If your idea of an awesome movie contains innocently-staged, overly dramatic antics, mixed with a typically 80's soundtrack (A bit ghetto and electronic) and whose plot line emphasis is on the 'slow and bubbly' side, then this one is for you!
