Blood Pressure (2012)
Not what you may be expecting
This was an excellent movie for a low-budget Canadian flick. I really think a different title and description would get it more exposure. It was not at all what I had expected based on the title and description, so the same is likely true for you.
The movie gave me a lot of food for thought. Unfortunately without giving spoilers, I can't elaborate. It is a bit dark - so take that as a warning.
The lead actress was awesome. She was entirely credible in the role. I understand she was 'accidentally' cast and the choice of putting her in this role was a solid call.
It's a shame that movies like this get buried while Hollywood trash does 100+ million at box office.
Jack & Jill (1998)
Mixed impressions
I didn't feel this was a total waste of time because I found myself exposed to new Canadian talent that I appreciated - all of the main characters EXCEPT for Jack. He was perfectly cast for the personality of the character however I could not understand why someone like Jill would even want to be with a loser like him.
In spite of enjoying everything else about this movie, this put me off enough that I'd have ranked this movie a 1 or 2 if it hadn't been for how the movie ended. For once, a bad movie ended up being not as bad because the ending was believable.
I am looking forward to seeing more work by the actors that played Jill and Stephen. I wish their biographies on IMDb had a bit more information.
Elephant Shoes (2005)
Very nice surprise
I am commenting only because of having read the negative reviews here.
I watched this movie a few hours ago without any expectations. In fact, only 5 or 10 minutes into it, I didn't expect to watch it until the end. I am SO glad I hung in there because it was definitely worth it.
I've had a relationship very much like the one between Manny and Alex. The first few days after we met were so much like what happened. (Minus the painting ;)) The relationship was an on and off one over the next 2 years. Primarily because of the distance between us. I wasn't able to fully commit to it and although its been years since the relationship ended, this movie helped me see what happened.
Sometimes you can meet someone where everything IS like a checklist of what you want in and with someone, but it isn't necessarily enough. Although it can be heart wrenching for both people, unfortunately that is just the way life and relationships are.
I appreciated this movie, not so much because of my own personal experience, but because it IS like real life. More so than most movies that are made. Not just for the story line, but also the dialogue and the characters acting was more REAL than the majority of movies I've seen.
I'm definitely not an indie-movie type person and in spite of being Canada, Canadian flicks usually bore me to pieces... but I think this one is definitely worth a watch.
Dead End (2003)
A very pleasant surprise!
I was flipping through movies late at night and came across Dead End. I hadn't heard about the movie before and had expected it to be simply another bad B horror flick. Little did I know I would be in store for a nice treat.
The combination of comedy with creepiness made it thoroughly enjoyable. I also loved that we got to actually know the characters as well as we did (great acting on the part of all the family members!) which is very atypical for movies of this genre.
If you're looking for a gory flick, this isn't for you. But if you want to watch a movie that will make 90 minutes fly by whilst making you laugh and cringe at various parts, go for it!
The Life of David Gale (2003)
Brilliant
I'm an avid movie fan. I might see maybe one movie every year or two that has a totally different ending than what I had anticipated that is entirely plausible. This was definitely one of them.
I've read through a number of the comments/reviews here and I'm baffled by those claiming it to be such a leftist movie. I'm entirely in favor of capital punishment. Whether it actually has any affect on deterring murder or not really doesn't matter to me. It's not a case of an eye for an eye either. It comes down to two things: if someone ends up with a life sentence with no chance of being paroled, it's a cost factor. Why should taxpayer's dollars pay for the continued incarceration of a murderer? The other thing is if someone IS released prematurely, we already know that the chances of them committing another crime in the future is very high. So why chance it?
In spite of my own belief about capital punishment and my hatred of movies that are there just to try and force opinions on me, I really enjoyed the movie. I thought it was well-rounded, the acting was superb and the flow of everything made sense.
Yeah, there are some small holes, but that made it all the more realistic for me. How many movies have you seen based on true stories that were all neatly tied up with a bow? Real life isn't like that.
